At the end of this contract Eli will be 35 and the team is reluctant right now to extend and lower his cap number. Do you think the team may be thinking this is the last contract they plan on letting him play it out and walk at the end?
that was all on his performance, it would be his first since he just entered the league so I wouldn't use it as some kind of indicator of future abilities.
on our offense and teams performance. The interesting thing is IF we suck TC could get fired, and the team may just let Elis contract expire and let him earn the right to be a free agent.
So Elis contract getting extended isn't a 100% thing. That's why we need to show a sense of urgency to get offensive talent ASAP. A bad season could mean massive changes for us.
2 years. He is 33 now, so when his contract expires he will be 35. So it all depends on Eli and is how productive the offense and team is. If we suck, I don't see us wanting to re-sign him. In fact, it wouldn't make sense. This contract ends when he is 35 which is actually a perfect point to gauge and see what he has left by then.
Obviously we're about to cut bait with a 2 time Super Bowl MVP. Clearly his career is over based on what we saw last season.
You are aware that he is still under contract for the next two seasons. Was not suggesting they were planning on cutting bait now, but what their expectations were of him after the contract. At 35, how many more seasons does he have in him? Ultimately, I think this season is very important to his future with the team and the Giants are wise not to commit contractually this off season.
No doubt in my mind, if Eli has a year like last year he is as good as gone. Blame the OL for 2013 which I agree with, but with a better OL and he has a repeat year then I don't see him here any longer. I am huge Eli fan FYI, just being realistic about the situation.
Good timing on the surgery also, what if they reevaluate him in 4 weeks and he is still bothered by it more than he should? Do the gianta surprise everyone and grab a qb?
that his contract expires at 35 years old. It gives us a chance to reevaluate his play and the offense. The coaching staff are all on 1 year deal. So if we do have a shitty year, I doubt Coughlin comes back. So the new coach can find his QB and we can either let Eli play his final year and let the QB sit.
However, if we do poorly it has the potential to facilitate major change.

Anish, I thought TC and staff were on a two-year deal? I know TC will be in a lame-duck year after this year, however I believe it's still two years.
However, he is not the only QB in the NFL who has to live with protection breakdowns. To give Eli a pass for last year is ridiculous. I can't explain how the 2011 Eli became the 2013 Eli, but the guts, the mental toughness were completely absent last year. You'd have to be delusional to believe that Eli's future as a starting QB in the NFL is not at stake this season.

Yeah 2 your deal, but we did that because we don't let coaches coach in a lame duck year. So basically it's a 1 year deal. If he sucks get fired. I don't see him coming back for the 2nd year, and then adding a year because it would be another lame duck year.
It's not impossible that this new offense is a total disaster. If it is, then I think there's a chance we look elsewhere as early as 2015. That would surprise me.
I agree. I hope this system does wonders for him and the offense in general. I just don't want to see the fucking ball go one way and the WR go another. I hope this system pads his stats too. I want to see Eli over 30 TDs in a season now.
The Gmen are clearly making Eli prove that last year was an aberration as opposed to a trend. If he has another year like last, it could be. It made a ton of sense for the Gmen to rework his deal this offseason and they made it clear that they didn't want to. That tells me that he needs to bounce back this year with a better team around him.
that's why the team has to show a sense of urgency and stack this offense with talent. This isn't a 2-3 year rebuild. We don't have that time as of now. This draft has to be able to add good offensive personnel who will contribute this upcoming season.
If we do poorly, there may be no tomorrow. Let's not forget all the other contracts that could expire soon.
RR is a free agent in 2015, as is Wilson and AR.
JJ, MM are in their contract years as is the whole freaking TE corps excluding AR.
We are a juncture where this offense can be over hauled soon.

" if he plays anything like the pile of shit he played like last year he has to go.
Eli has had a weird career. He's played great in big spots for us but anyone who thinks he's a great QB is delusional."
I know that with that comment you have your head up your ass. With all that crap around your head it must be really hard to see what's happening. I would sincerely suggest you open your fly so you can watch the games closely and Eli closely. But now it's too late for you to see clearly the past facts . Soo0 zip up and live in your shitty world but be quiet so no one will know your situation.
Britt in Va: You watched a different season than I did.
Don't confuse duck and chuck with mental toughness. Eli completed 55% of his passes to Giants and 5% to the other team for a 60% completion percentage. His passer rating was 59th in the NFL which means approximately 30 back-up out- performed him as a thrower last year.
He stood behind a decimated line all the way until the last game of the season, in the pouring rain behind a patchwork line, when he didn't have to, and took a complete beating and got hurt.
You want to talk about guts and mental toughness, that's what I think about. Not statistics.
I have no idea why you responded like that. Weird.
Take it easy, you're not on the team. Just my opinion. Eli is not a great QB. He's a good QB. Clear gap between him and guys like Brees, Rodgers, Brady, and his brother.
Those guys are GREAT qbs who dominate week to week. Eli goes through painful stretches GREAT qbs don't.
Fact.

No that means that 20 something non-QBs who threw a pass or 2 finished above him. Eli was 35th among qualifiers, which still sucks but let's at least get the facts a little closer to reality.
He will be damn close to top 10 in all time TDs and passing yards, with 2 SB MVPs. Moreover, if we can win or at least go 8-8, during his tenure when he started this past season could be his only losing season for us when he started a full season.
The fact that the team hasn't extended him this offseason to gain additional cap space is very telling (no matter what is said publicly). This is going to be a huge season for Eli and this team. I don't want to use the term "make or break" for a 2 time Super Bowl MVP QB but this seasons will have a huge impact on how the Giants view the position going forward and whether they start planning for his replacement beginning next offseason.
been great for the giants. But he's not a great player in the grand scheme of things. He's not a great QB in todays NFL. Certainly not great in the history of NFL qbs.
You're 1000% correct. If you go to any fan base and say..
You will make a ballsy trade for a QB.
In 10 years you will have 2 SBs. He will have SB MVPs, and in that 10 years you're team will have 1 losing season. This QB will also be a class act and not an off field issue. Moreover, he will have a shot at top 10 all time in TDs and passing yards.
Would you sign for him?
Let's see how many fucking fan bases say no thanks to that.
Now it would be interesting if you told that fan base it's Eli and what their reaction would be.
Still, I want to see how many fan bases would say no thanks to that.

How do you measure greatness? Stats? I know I keep bringing him up, but Elway wasn't any sort of statistical monster.
He's remembered as a great QB, a HOF QB, because of those big moments. The 4th quarter comebacks and the clutch play.
Until his last five years, Elway regularly threw more INTs than TD's.
Eli has been a very good, but inconsistent QB that has had massive highs and massive lows. He's the best QB the Giants have ever had, when you factor in both longevity and accomplishment, but most people are going to understandably view him as the third best of his own draft class and beyond guys like Brees or Rodgers.
It is beyond wrong to say something like he's "nothing special" (and there's a fair case that he probably would have become a better player on another team) or to ever regret or question the team acquiring him like some still stupidly do, but it's not wrong to say he's not been/isn't all-time NFL great, in the big picture, either.
The joy he gave us in performing two Super Bowl winning drives is greater than the experience of the entire existence of many franchises. Add up every good moment in Eagle history and that doesn't approach the joy of the Tyree play and how that game played out. He could have retired immediately after that game and he would have been golden forever. Instead he went and did it again.
There isn't a stat line in the world that could possibly equal that. I don't give a shit at all where people rank him or if they consider him elite...what was actually done was singular and historic, and can never be undone.
Basically. It's smart what they're doing. The Giants are simply not boxing themselves in, that's all.
And I DON'T gamble.
So Elis contract getting extended isn't a 100% thing. That's why we need to show a sense of urgency to get offensive talent ASAP. A bad season could mean massive changes for us.

I think some of his best years may still be ahead of him.
I've always compared Eli to Elway, and Elway's best years were his last five or six.

That's pretty damn good.
In the big picture, he's had a phenominal career, if it ended today, no matter how you slice it.
A lot of you are going to miss him when he's gone.
Ding ding ding!
