Giants reach out to QB Matt Flynn

Antonio Fierce : 4/11/2014 12:16 pm
@RVacchianoNYDN: Josh Freeman may not be the only vet QB the Giants workout in the near future. They have also reached out to free agent QB Matt Flynn.

I don't understand.
Josh in the City : 4/11/2014 12:19 pm : link
Is Nassib really that bad that we can't rely on him as the #2 QB this season (and only carry 2 on the roster)? Could this be insurance in case there are complications with Eli's ankle? Something doesn't add up.
I wonder if there is more to this surgery than they are

if only to have him around for the summer to help install new offensive schemes as someone that may know them pretty well. Josh Freeman, maybe not so much.
They need

bodies for workouts until Eli is ready to go in 6+ weeks. Also, until they see Nassib through pre-season they need a vet on the roster just in case Eli is out.
What a fucking waste of 2 draft picks on Nassib
ZogZerg : 4/11/2014 12:33 pm : link
He must suck that bad that they are scrambling now because Eli is missing a few weeks.

Hitting on a 4th and 6th round pick last year could have really helped the team this year.

Probably similar systems to Green Bay, but we don't know that yet. Remember TC has his stamp on this offense too. But I agree that McAdoo knows Flynn and Flynn will probably understand the terminology too.

its dissapointing because it suggests we are going to waste another roster spot carrying an additional QB that might be better used on another position.

I don't know that there are many teams who would want to trade picks for Nassib. His body of work in the NFL is zero.

BMac : 4/11/2014 12:57 pm : link
...Nassib was picked as and is still regarded as a developmental prospect; a long-term developmental prospect. What happens to him in the future has nothing to do with where he is today. That's why he wasn't thrown into the fire last year. No point in ruining him behind a makeshift line, plus he's just not anywhere near ready.

I want to see what he may do in a more short-passing-oriented scheme (not that I have any inkling what MacAdoo and TC are cooking up, mind you).

The idea of anyone trading anything, even a used jock strap, for him at this point is just ludicrous. I could be more insulting, but why bother?

Bossman. Seriously, choke on a syphilitic dick. Please. Pretty please with jism on top.

that's a good point Eric, but I don't think Nassib is going to be the answer. If he was that good he wouldn't have lasted til Round 4. Who knows though, Tim Rattay and Tom Brady were a coin flip away from being on differnt teams in Round 6.

What I do know is that it took 10 years before Phil Simms was truly replaced, and that in most cases it takes a 1st Rounder to find big time QB. And all the Eli haters will come out of the woodwork saying how great he was after he is retired and the parade of Hostetlers, Browns, Grahams and Kannells starts.

But organized team activity sessions begin on May 28, not long after the 33-year-old Manning is scheduled to resume running, and he won’t likely be fully ready for drills then. According to several sources, the expectation is Manning will either not be ready for, or held back from most of the OTAs this spring and possibly even the full-team mini-camp in mid-June. So there will be a lot of on-field work that he’ll miss.

That’s why the team is expected to look at several veterans, such as the 26-year-old Freeman and the 28-year-old Flynn. The Giants do have veteran Curtis Painter and second-year pro Ryan Nassib on the roster, but they’ll need at least one more quarterback to run their spring drills.

Or they're looking for a guy to throw in OTAs while Eli is healing up.

And if worse comes to worst and the team does need three quarterbacks on the roster, I'd rather see somebody beat out Curtis Painter for the primary backup spot.

If Eli doesn't rebound, it seems highly unlikely that the Giants are going to rely on a former 4th round pick to replace him. I think they would probably draft a QB in the first or second round next year.
Maybe Buffalo will take Nassib to swap spots in round one.
wgenesis123 : 4/11/2014 1:23 pm : link
They are rumored to be looking for another QB in round one. They had interest in Nassib last year. They could get their QB and retain a first round pick.
Nothing wrong with bringing in another veteran QB
GiantJake : 4/11/2014 1:24 pm : link
Every move the Giants make doesn't mean that someone sucks. Sometimes it's about bringing in a player and seeing if you can catch lightning in a bottle. It's about adding depth and competition and making sure that Eli doesn't have to rush himself. Hell, if the Giants decide to take Flynn or Freeman to camp...fantastic. It's about competition and bringing in football players. Hey, maybe a few teams have called about Nassib's availability. This year's QB class is full of question marks and maybe a team would rather trade a 3rd rounder for Nassib than gamble a 1st or 2nd rounder on a guy they aren't sold on. It's not impossible. Either way, the more competition in camp the better.
Nassib
LG in NYC : 4/11/2014 1:26 pm : link
All I know about him is that pre-draft, I heard Jaws say on ESPN Radio that Nassib was his favorite QB of that draft.

It is the only reason I recognized his name when the Giants drafted him. I'd like to think Jaws knows something about QB's so there must be something about RN that is decent.

The beauty of having a new system, I am excited for, is to see how Nassib does in it. If Nassib can do well learning this system, and prove it, I think this change of a system could potentially be a great thing for us and set us up for the future, if Nassib can show he can master this.

I am very curious to see how he does now.

The Nassib trade talk is ....well....the only picks we could get for him now would be tooth picks. As stated by others Nassib is a project in very early stages. And, it was a wasted draft pick as well. :)

Makes sense, Giants #1 and Nassib for Buffalo #1

I think
Clowney, Robinson, Mathews, Mack, Watkins and 3 QBs will be gone.

Target could be (Evans)ahead of TN and DET.
or one of the OTs (Lewan)or possibly Barr.
What overreaction
Champ46 : 4/11/2014 2:09 pm : link
I don't comment that much, but most of these comments are nuts. Eli will be fine, first and foremost. He was throwing at Duke, he didn't feel 100 percent, he is doing the right thing. This is a clean out to help the healing, nothing more nothing less. There is no conspiracy theory. They are bringing in quarterbacks because they (1) don't think Nassib is ready in case off emergency (2) they need an extra body during otas while Eli is rehabbing or (3) someone offered a pick for Nassib and the Giants are considering the offer, this is not so far fetched, some people thought Nassib should have went in the first round, or the Giants are anticipating they may be offered something for Nassib at the draft. Stay calm BBI.

MattHofstra : 4/11/2014 2:32 pm : link
are nuts..I've never seen such overreactions to "Nassib must be awful to "Eli's ankle must be really bad"

Maybe they just want some bodies to try and create some competition amongst Nassib and Painter..I actually thought Painter did a nice job in camp last year and in preseason games, but I don't think it's a bad idea to get a few guys in there to see if we can have somewhat of an adequate backup..Eli is getting older and while he still has plenty of good years ahead of him, we have gotten incredibly lucky with him not missing any time and we all know it could happen at any point.
HAHAHA.

Look at all the little girls in full panic mode.

"Eli must be hurt worse than they're letting on."

"They have no confidence in Nassib. They're getting ready to trade him as part of a deal to move up."

As others have said, they need extra arms for the OTAs. And this says nothing about Nassib. Nothing.

NJGiantFan84 : 4/11/2014 2:52 pm : link
was drafted as a project. You may not like the pick, but to expect him to be anything but a QB who needs work is going to drive you crazy. He wasn't ready last year and probably won't be ready to be the #2 this year. But that doesn't mean he won't be the following year and for years to come. It also doesn't mean he won't develop into a potential starter that gets us picks in a trade. We don't know yet and we won't for some time.
