NFT: Islanders - Devils 7pm Game Thread

pganut : 4/11/2014 5:18 pm
Cappy to address media at 5:30 with lineups, so no confirmation of netminder. Nilsson is expected to get the start.

Probable lines: Lee-Nielsen-Bailey, Persson-Nelson-Strome,
McDonald-Cizikas-Martin, Gallant-Halmo-Johnson

Another day, another rookie. 32 year old journeyman Justin Johnson has been called up from BPT to replace Johan Sundstrom who spent the night in the hospital in Montreal following last night's game. Humble native Alaskan; he came to Halmo's first game as an Islander at NVMC but refused to enter the players' lounge since he wasn't part of the team. Now he gets to. Another "reward" callup for a long career in the minors (5 seasons in the ECHL, 4 in the AHL).

From Isles statistician Eric Hornick:
Quote:
Johnson will be the 14th rookie (13 skaters + Anders Nilsson) to appear in a game this season for the Isles and the 7th to make his NHL debut since the Olympic break. The Isles used 15 rookies in 2009-10 but three of them were goalies, so the 13 rookie skaters is their most since they also used 13 rookie skaters in 2008-09.

And for those that like to see arrogance humbled (maybe it's just me living in the DC area and I constantly hear the know-nothing Caps fans talk a lot of smack), here's a link to a rare good, objective article from the Washington Post on the deep-seeded problems in the Caps organization: http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/capitals/washington-capitals-problems-began-long-before-their-playoff-streak-ended/2014/04/11/3fc8ede6-c0f5-11e3-b195-dd0c1174052c_story.html

Spoiler alert

The Devils lose 2-1 in a shootout.
A friend of mine, a true die hard Isles fan,
Mike in Long Beach : 4/11/2014 5:35 pm : link
was (ridiculously) kind enough to give ma a perfectly fine 46 inch TV since he was getting a new one. As a thank you I gave him the tickets I Had for tonight's game.

What a sad year :(
Goalies, confirmed
pganut : 4/11/2014 5:40 pm : link
Nilsson for the Islanders, Brodeur for the Devils.
The stat you quoted
JayBinQueens : 4/11/2014 5:45 pm : link
shows why we're suckers for the good runs at the end of the year.
We're always dressing rookies who play well and just don't take the next step. Dressing 13 rookies in 3 of the last 6 seasons?? That's a crazy amount
Jay
pganut : 4/11/2014 5:55 pm : link
Rookies that don't take the next step, or aren't given the chance because of some stupid FA signing (ex: PMB, Regin, Mottau, Jurcina, etc.)?
Correction to gametime start
pganut : 4/11/2014 7:01 pm : link
Puck drops at 7:30. No idea why 2 east coast teams aren't playing at 7, but whatever. Apologies for the incorrect time in the OP.
Yup
JayBinQueens : 4/11/2014 7:38 pm : link
the bad FA signing's don't help though I think we're all expecting the same again this off season unless the sale goes through.

Weird that it's not a 7pm game. Guess they wanted to build the anticipation? lol
I kind of think Marty stands on his head tonight
pganut : 4/11/2014 7:40 pm : link
In what could be his last home game as a Devil.
What a beautiful pass there by Strome
pganut : 4/11/2014 7:52 pm : link
Persson lifts the backhand wide.
DERS!
pganut : 4/11/2014 7:55 pm : link
What a ripper there! 1-0 Isles.
Great shot
JayBinQueens : 4/11/2014 7:56 pm : link
thought he was going to pass but just ripped it
ahhh
feelflows : 4/11/2014 7:57 pm : link
that must've felt good. a bit of a drought for Lee.

sick shot
and...
feelflows : 4/11/2014 7:59 pm : link
he gets to tell his kids he scored on Brodeur ;)
come on church-man
JayBinQueens : 4/11/2014 8:01 pm : link
would love to see Hornick post a stat about goals given up within 2 minutes of scoring one to see just how far in last the Isles actually are
On the Devs goal
pganut : 4/11/2014 8:05 pm : link
Isles D turned passive...no hitting like they'd been doing the first 12 minutes. That said, it looks like the Devils have been getting away with a couple of picks/interference calls in the Isles end.

Defense needs to realize they're not playing the Harlem Globetrotters...get to the effing man and hit them. Don't stand and watch.
Not a bad crowd considering
Dave M : 4/11/2014 8:12 pm : link
Martin needed to bury that
So predictable
pganut : 4/11/2014 8:14 pm : link
Nilsson should have saved that though.
well that sucked
JayBinQueens : 4/11/2014 8:14 pm : link
If you would have told me the Isles scored on 33% of their shots in the period, normally I'd be happy
Stuck with the Devs feed
pganut : 4/11/2014 8:41 pm : link
But Chico announced he is leaving the booth after thus season. Apparently, his wife's sister is ill and they're moving to MN to care for her. Sucky announcer, but a genuinely good guy and will always be an Islander.
Jeez
pganut : 4/11/2014 8:55 pm : link
When the puck is in our zone, CMac is a friggin' traffic cone. Useless, and stands completely still.

What happened to Zeeker? Catch a stick up high? Heaven forbid Chico take a breath to inform anyone.
Strome close but no cigar from in close
pganut : 4/11/2014 9:12 pm : link
Where was the kind of play from the Isles all period that they showed in the last 4 minutes of the period? Lots of passengers tonight. And Bailey...looks timid tonight, moreso than usual. Lee, Nelson, Strome and Zeeker are the only ones showing me anything tonight. On D, I've been keying on Mayfield. I think I like what I've seen so far since his callup.
Strome on fire!
pganut : 4/11/2014 9:27 pm : link
Another goal for the kid. Sweet hands.
quick release
feelflows : 4/11/2014 9:30 pm : link
and great shot
We have got to be THE worst team at clearing the puck.
pganut : 4/11/2014 9:34 pm : link
Ticky tack call on Hammer there.
Strome sneaky fast there
pganut : 4/11/2014 9:40 pm : link
And almst burys a wraparound. You can see the confidence with each passing game; the skill is there. Next season with a healthy team...some very interesting possibilities.
do you consider
feelflows : 4/11/2014 9:41 pm : link
keeping him at wing?
You know, we brought this up last night
pganut : 4/11/2014 9:46 pm : link
He's definitely playing well there. And now thinking about him alongside JT and KO is tantalizing. But he's a natural C and should easily be L2C, which allows Fransie to slide to 3C (where on a "real" team, he should be). Those 3 centers, 4 if you count Zeeker on L4, make us very strong down the middle. Balanced talent/depth will be the key to any success the Isles will have.
Bailey chokes on a great opportunity
pganut : 4/11/2014 9:53 pm : link
And then naturally, we get a 2 on 1...but as per recent times, it's with the 4th liners, so Martin and CMac ain't exactly JT and KO.
Oh, Brock
pganut : 4/11/2014 10:04 pm : link
2 chances to win it there. So close.
Dear Santa,
pganut : 4/11/2014 10:10 pm : link
Please bring our defensemen some drills that teach them to put a shot on goal. Thank you.
was it just me
feelflows : 4/11/2014 10:11 pm : link
or did it look like brock was skating in maple syrup on that breakaway.. it took forever to develop lol
I saw that and realized he was gassed.
pganut : 4/11/2014 10:13 pm : link
Good effort, tho.

I sense the Isles being charitable and giving NJ their first shootout win.
lol
feelflows : 4/11/2014 10:19 pm : link
another shootout loss for the Devils

all 3 Isles score.. bailey & strome with spin around goals. nice!

I still hate the shootout.
LOL
pganut : 4/11/2014 10:19 pm : link
2 spin-o-ramas. All 3 scored. Can't remember the last time I saw us do that. Thank Stamkos for setting that precedent...after his "legal" one against us, it opened up the door for everyone to do that. I just like that the Isles said "eff it" and pulled out all the stops. Strome's star is going to shine bright.

looked horrible in the shootout..
Shootout loss? This is my surprise face

I actually thought you were due. feelflows is right...Thor was very shaky in the SO. He was in constant motion, never in control. If not for Jagr losing the handle, I'd have bet you scored on all 3. But...another nice win for the never-say-die kids. Overcame adversity on the road to come back yet again. The young guns again supplied the goals in reg, and I have to believe that resiliency and experience of now "having done it" will have a positive effect on next year's group at both ends.
Good lord
