Rubin reports ...

Jeurys Familia loaded the bases with a pair of one-out intentional walks, then plunked Hank Conger to force in the winning run as the Angels beat the Mets, 5-4, in 11 innings late Friday night. ... The Angels left 14 men on base. The Mets left four men on base the entire game and failed to score over the final seven innings.

Pretty long blog this morning ... - ( New Window )

Has five of the six losses been by one run? These are the losses that suck.
Stupid me, stupid Terry Collins

I was still up and watching when they lost it at 2 am. Stupid me.
Man on third one out. They intentionally walked two in a row to load the bases. Ron Darling claims it's the right move. I say to myself, "Bullshit Ron, he's going to walk the winning run in". Well I was completely right, he didn't walk him, he plunked him.
In retrospect it didn't matter because the Mets weren't about to score again anyway.
I'm tired.
It's too early to get invested in baseball

it was the right move to walk bases loaded. The wrong move was using 3 pitchers in the 8th inning

yep. Also Familia was over 50 pitches. He had pitched three innings. I probably go to Valverde there at the end. Familia was clearly struggling at that point.

noticed Ron (whom I really like) has strangely had a really "homer" tone the last 1+ seasons. Homer in the sense he defends every decision Collins makes. I'm not anti-Collins I just have noticed this lately.
The decision

to walk the bases full in that situation is not unusual. I assume it was made after evaluating the pitcher/hitter match-ups with the walked batters and finding neither particularly favorable.

Collins makes the bullpen worse than it is

(and it is not exactly great to be gin with)

One thing he does over and over is pulling guys mid-inning because of lefty-righty matchups when it is completely unnecessary..

A typical scenario:

1. German or Torres retires the first two batters, both of whom are RH.

2. Collins brings Rice or Lannan into face the lefty, even though the RH reliever is doing fine.

3. Rice gives up a hit or walks the lefty.

4. Collins brings in a RH to face the next hitter, who is RH.

Now, he has used 3 pitchers for no reason whatsover. Also, the more pitchers you use, the more likely you are to bring in that one guy who just does not have it that particular day.

Bobby Valentine used the pen like that all the time
