NFT: Going fishing today

mattlawson : 4/12/2014 9:07 am
Speing is indeed here and I've taken the kids down to the lake a couple times and we've done well. Today I'll have se time to myself and plan to make the most of it. Beer, cigar, fly rod, float tube.

My dad sent me back from Christmas with his float tube for fly fishing that he bought on ebay several years ago but never used. I have a small local lake right next to my house now - and gave him a hard time about the float tube until he finally gave in. I mean, he's never been on a single hike, let alone a fishing destination hike in his life. Figured I would atleast break it in for him.

Anyone else been fishin lately? Can't wait for the shad / Striper run later

I bet you haven't bought anything for dinner :)
Ha, reminds me of a trip

I took a long time ago with some friends to Saranac Lake, I think. We got there in the afternoon, got in the boat and went at it. Caught one that we didn't think was a keeper and threw it back. That was the last fish we saw that evening. We were so confident we were having fish for dinner that we didn't bring anything else, lol. Did manage to catch a miserable sunburn though
When do the shad run?
BlueLou : 4/12/2014 9:17 am : link
been so long since my chef days I've forgotten. Shad roe, dredged in flour and sauteed in butter, is one of those food items straight from G-d.

I grew up in NY/NJ, and never even tasted shad roe till I was a chef in California in my 20s...
I release all these fish
mattlawson : 4/12/2014 9:20 am : link
But I'll say this. Rarely are we shutout. And usually unless it's a brook trout do i keep. I like to keep one for the camp fire - just to have a taste. And release the rest. Always throw the first one back too even on a keeper mission.

We used to go up to the Adirondacks with nothing but a 30 pack, a pack of smokes, a lighter, and our rods. That was so much fun living off the river. We'd cook em up in the beer cans and use the cardboard to get a fire started. It was a worthy challenge for sure.

I haven't been up there in a couple years - miss it. Small kids and living half way across the country will do that I guess.

Down here in mid Atlantic this month. Stripers follow. We may be a tad behind with the late spring. Usually end of March is this kind of weather.
Thanks matt,

Up many times with the baby and I guess I'm still a little punchy this am. Coffee not quite kicked in yet.

You're among the class acts here consistently, and I've been down the baby road myself, twice, and as an older dad at 45+...

'Taint nuttin'.
I just returned from a four day fishing trip yesterday

Caught a lot of bass, mostly lg mouth and also some spotted. I also caught a Long Nose Gar that was about 3 1/2 feet long that was quite the fighter. It was the first time I have ever caught one of those.
Fresh caught lake fish. Yum! Enjoy.

The alligator fish - ha

I caught one of similar size on a fly rod on the James river on a big hellgramite pattern, I had no camera and most importantly -- no pliers. My jogging fly rig was a bit too minimal. Had to de hook with a long stick. You better believe both issues were remedied as soon as I got back to the house

Yeah, those teeth are pretty wicked. I was lucky though I had a pair of gloves, the right tools to work with and a friend with me in the boat to assist. I wouldn't have wanted to do it myself with only a stick, I probably would have just cut the line. Not a fan of shredded fingers (grin).

A day day of fishing
Headhunter : 4/12/2014 10:09 am : link
is better than a good day at work
Fishing already? Damn I'm jealous.

I have a love hate w/ gar
mako J : 4/12/2014 10:12 am : link
I love how they'll swim alongside the boat at slow speeds, "investigating" what's making noise on their turf..... But I hate to think how many great bass they consume every year.

We used to bowfish 'em when they'd spawn in the creeks...good times.
For anyone interested

I stopped counting. Not a lot of bass action though. Mostly bream. Several nice size ones though. Dry flies, nymphs, and streamers all got action

steve in ky : 4/12/2014 5:34 pm : link
I mostly fish for bass, but even bluegill/sunfish can be fun with ultra-light tackle. As long as it is fishing it is still good and time worth spent. Glad you had fun.
Yeah on the fly a nice bream will put up a fight

On this lake all the panfish are in together - best time to fish really is at night there. I don't get the opportunity to fish in the day too often so it was great to get out. Had action the entire time. Float tube was a lot of fun. Had some very explosive top water takes as well.
