suitable to families?
My wife and older daughter, along with the wife's sister and her youngest daughter, and maybe some cousins (not sure all who took this side jaunt) are up there tonight before heading back to NYC tomorrow sometime.
A nice pub with good beer and pizza or fish and chips would suit them, as well as anyplace with good burgers.
Hoping I can surprise her with a nice restaurant recommendation from afar...
Waverly NY is about 5 minutes away and there's a couple bars that serve food - I think one is the Railhouse and the other is Lefty's (??). There's also a half decent restaurant at the Shepard Hills CC.
Not anything in Athens that I know of - the downtown was hammered by the floods a few years back and not sure if it's recovered yet.
Elmira and Binghamton, NY are a half hour in either direction on Rt 17 and probably offer much more but I have no idea. We used to go to Bernie Murray's in Elmira quite a bit in HS and college.
Hopefully they'll avoid having their night interrupted by a fight between a couple of unemployed, gas-well transients who are high on bath salts.

Original Italian Grill on Lehigh Ave in Sayre. Great food and bar but a bit noisy at times.

And for just wings and bar food there's Alligers House of Wings on Spring St. in Sayre. Not a bad or rough place just more of a bar atmosphere. A lot of the gas fracking people go there.

Hope this helps.
Modestly priced and family friendly too. I'm going to recommend that to them.

Rock n Docks is a great place if you're the type that likes a very loud bar scene and aren't afraid to get into a fight. Lefty's in Waverly is now just apartments. The guy that owns just couldn't manage it well. They did have pretty good food.
In Sayre, if you want Italian, try Mangalardo's. It is about as old school as it comes, so your daughter might not like it. Lefty's has a good burger. The Rail House is decent.
Not realluy a place to eat, but Soprano's Market in Waverly has some good take-away food. My grandparents live in Sayre, but we rarely go out there when I'm home.
So they ate in the "Black Diamond" restaurant in the lounge of their hotel - the Best Westin Grand Victorian Inn. The hotel it seems was quite nice and a good choice for a large family group (it also has overall positive ratings on TripAdvisor). The restaurant, which I've seem mostly mediocre reviews of, apparently fit the bill if only because they offered their typical Sunday evening special last night - an all you can eat buffet featuring Prime Rib for $12.50 pp.
Knowing what I do of American beef, and particularly Prime Rib, and how it compares to Israeli beef in general, it would be very hard to go wrong with Prime Rib. Especially at a price per person that at today's shekel/dollar exchange rate amounts to 44 shekels per person! One pays that amount in Israel at a chain burger place for a burger and fries.
They were happy enough with the food, for sure if not over-joyed.
I also think they got a small bit of a "kick" out of seeing horesradish and cream sauce as a condiment for beef, or butter and sour cream offered for their baked potatoes, though of course they've seen that before in the US.
