Gwenyth Paltrow said in an interview last week or so that she does it, so there's been a spike in the idea making the rounds.
Yeah...I've seen a lot of people spread the beneficial myth based on some dude's ridiculously unscientific "study." Pretty gross if you tell me...coconut oil in your mouth for 20 min? No thanks.
Off the top of my head I can see no reason why it would whiten teeth. Whiteners are basically oxygenating agents that remove stain from porosities in the enamel. An oil would seem to plug those porosities up and keep stains trapped. As far as gum health, most of the harmful bacteria are anaerobic- they thrive in an absence of oxygen. Again, oil would serve as a barrier to getting oxygen into the gums.
I tried oil pulling after first hearing about it in a blog post by fitness trainer Courtney Prather a couple weeks ago. I've noticed that my teeth appear whiter and I've been sleeping better, which is listed as one of the benefits of oil pulling.
It's not for everyone, but I definitely plan to continue doing it.
And that only takes 2 minutes.

Swishing anything in your mouth for 20 mins is bound to dislodge particulates which lead to plague and bacteria.
