BBI old game review ready: 2000 Giants vs Jaguars

Matt in SGS : 4/14/2014 8:01 am
Again, this one took a little longer than I wanted, but this is a review of the Giants vs Jaguars in the final regular season game of 2000. It was a cold Saturday game where the Giants found themselves in a position that with a win, they would clinch homefield advantage throughout the playoffs. It was something that was unthinkable after back to back blowouts at home by the Rams and Lions, which prompted Fassel's "push the chips to the middle of the table" speech.

Meanwhile on the other side was a younger Tom Coughlin and the Jags, a team that was a consistent power in the AFC for years, but fell on hard times and after a slow start, found themselves out of the playoffs and playing for nothing but pride and spoiling the Giants run.

This game was a low scoring affair for most of the afternoon and the Jaguars had a lead into the 4th quarter. In the last 3 minutes of the game however, the teams would score 4 TDs, including a Jason Sehorn return of an onside kick for a TD, and the Giants would hold on for a 28-25 win.

I was at the game (and all the other games that season). A little bit of a nailbiter a the end but Sehorn's return to seal it was awesome. Tagging this one for later viewing, thanks Matt!
One of the coldest days I can remember at the stadium.

before that game. Specifically that Fred Taylor was going to run all over them.

It got the Giants fired up and they beat the hell out of Taylor every time he touched the ball. IIRC, Taylor could not finish the game.
Excellent write up Matt.

This is a very memorable game, one of my favorites. I look forward to watching the highlights late today.
Thanks

I recalled the huge Williams hit prior to seeing the video. Nice memory. That was a fun, COLD game around the holidays.
I remember that game too - especially

I was coming off a brutal bout of food poisoning the day prior but I managed to make it to the game. Glad I did. I still remember the death shot Shawn Williams put on Jimmy Smith. You saw that hit coming from a mile away.

always had trouble closing games out. 21-10 with 3 minutes left, you think it's over but a minute later it's a 3 point game. Even after the kick return, still not over, had to survive a final onside kick.

That said, it's pretty amazing that the 2000 team had as good a regular season record as any Giant team in the Coughlin era.

This guy's comment that both teams were 11-3 with a game after the 2008 contest is wrong. That was the last game of the NFL regular season on Sunday night.
Oh my bad

Right both teams were 11-3, we lost the fourth game to Minnesota the next week. Never mind.
