Missed time his first two years because of his knee
Hip surgery in 2010
IR after 2 concussions in three weeks in 2011
Torn ACL last year
In seven seasons he's only played 16 games twice but one of those years was a pro bowl season and he'll only be 28 at the start of this season. For that, I understand the interest but I would most certainly be cautious.
Reese is trying to cover all bases before the draft.
I could see being happy with an incentive-laden short-term deal that allows Rice to rebuild value and prove that he can stay healthy and allows the Giants to hedge their bet on Randle and/or bridge the gap from Nicks to a Rookie.
Bring him in for the medical staff to take a look at. If they think there's a reasonable chance that Rice can have a productive year, start talking numbers. Given the shape of the guy's career, I can't imagine that any other teams are putting much guaranteed money on the table.
I have no problem if he comes in on a minimum contract and tries to make the team. The Giants will only sign him at their price and with his injury history, it won't be much more than veteran minimum. Guys like Rice and Manningham are at a point where they have to prove they can still play in the league. Good, they are cheap and motivated. Let them push Rueben Randle. You can never have enough competition and if they don't perform...they get cut.
more than vet minimum. Maybe not much more. Something like an incentive laden contract tied to playing time.
BTW: If you look at his stats, it's weird. Pedestrian to OK every year except this unreal 2009 season where he has 83 catches for 1312 yards. Sidney Rice - ( New Window )

Not that weird.. Favre was there that year and he was awesome. He never had a QB playing at that level any other year he's been around.
be a camp body signed for vet minimum in all likelihood. As someone said, he has a long injury history. I would pass, but it's not like we'd be guaranteeing anything. Reese is loading up on second tier FAs, which is fine. Two or three should make the 53. The rest will be cut. If they do anything, then maybe another team or the Giants will pick them up mid season.
Definitely talent worthy of a starter in the league. Unless the light bulb suddenly goes on for Randle, all Rice would have to do is make it through training camp in order to be the starter for the Giants, but the injury history is a real turn off. If he had a bad attitude, that might be easier to deal with than injuries.
If Seattle is putting out feelers now but gets no takers, he will be a definite post draft cut. Sit back and wait. Then offer a low risk contract.
No, just players like Rice who are talented but extremely prone to getting hurt. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense giving a lot of guaranteed money to a player who is hurt as often as Rice or Austin are.
Normally I'd agree and that is a funny trend around here, but this is a guy who's broken 800 yards once in seven NFL seasons, and he's failed due to both injuries and at times just a flat out lack of production.
Maybe he'll garner a smidge more than the vet minimum but he's not worth much more, IMO.
I'd take a shot on Austin, maybe. You can't pencil these guys in to the lineup though. At some point they are just a waste of roster spot. They get injured every year. Maybe it's a bridge to a rookie though in week 4 when they inevitably get hurt.
I guess that last part makes sense.
The idea isn't to sign Rice and then depend on him as a starter..
If he's cheap, you're not taking a big risk but there's a really solid potential reward if he can manage to stay healthy which is why you do it. If they check him out and he just physically isn't there, you move on.. but I always like the idea of low risk/high reward deals. If they don't work out, so be it. I realize the roster spot is valuable but even still.
"...but we shouldn't overpay" regarding any potential free agent transaction thread?
Everybody on BBI who has recommended that the Giants overpay a player lately, please raise your hands...
It was me. I recommended that the Giants overpay Schofield because his agent's brother went to college with my second cousin on my mother's side. He's kinda family you know...
scenario. You get him in. He looks good. You keep him. He moves up the depth chart. Other guys get cut. You rely on him, make big plans. Then he gets hurt again. What have you gained by the cheap contract? You were counting on him. Anybody can get injured. On one play 5 guys can get hurt. True. But at some point you have to decide that you're going younger & healthier. Rice always impressed the hell out of me. But they already have one reclamation project in Manningham. Who needs 2?
is getting everything he can so that he can be a flexible as possible on draft day.. If they sign Rice I would expect them to go heavy on OL/DL in the draft..
the guy has tremendous talent.. he's got speed, and he's a big target.. he lived up to his potential in spurts.. with that one great year too.. but still.. if healthy.. yeah.. that's an if.. and injuries have been a problem.. but if healthy.. he's a guy who is still young (27) and can make an impact on a team and steady his career assuming he stays healthy..
he could be looking for a Reese/BBI famous "one year prove it contract".. which is nice.. but if he comes here and stays healthy.. I'd much rather have him a minimum of 2 years.. with that said.. if he comes here and stays healthy and produces.. chances of us keeping him are very slim.. then he'd be looking for big money..
by a mile for me. However, Rice has had some major injuries and is always banged up so that might bring them closer. Without knowing Rice's health right now, it's tough to say which guy I'd rather, but if we want upside, Rice is the better option.
Rice was amazing that year and was Favre's favorite target. He suffered an injury and missed 2/3's of the 2010 season. He then became a free agent and didn't do much in Seattle. He is the most interesting receiver left out there. I'd love to see the Giants bring him in. Lets see what Eli can do with him.
he was awesome in 2009 and he routinely made circus catches and stretched the field. I loved him after 2009, but then he battled injuries and bad QB play for a while. The dude has upside, no doubt.
They are taking a shot on a guy who, before his injuries, was pretty brilliant.
I wouldn't expect much. Especially from a guy whose career has been injury ridden becoming a member of one of the most injury prone teams in the league.
But if he does stay healthy it would be a great signing, at least for this season.
For sure Rice is not the play the Giants are making to replace Nicks.
Y not?
Thanks Jerry.

Camp comp, veteran presence for young wides(just because he hasnt played much doesnt mean doesnt mean hes not learned things).
New York Giants Interested in Sidney Rice - ( New Window )

If he is healthy and checks out, fingers crossed, I think he improves the corps.

Of those two? Austin is DEFINITELY a better player, but Austin's issue is that he's constantly hurt.
The Giants reserve a hospital bed!
I'd prefer Rice to Austin.
At least it had better be.

I would too without batting an eye. We have Cruz -- who is better than Austin. We need a deep threat that can out jump a top corner. Could be rice
I guess that last part makes sense.

Of course you wouldn't pay squat guaranteed for Rice, that goes without saying.

which, unfortunately for him, is never.
Beginning to think more and more, 1st pick is a receiver.

The team still needs more depth at WR and maybe more guys that can stretch the field.
