Mason : 4/14/2014 2:39 pm : link
Can't give that cap money away huh.
Why the hell does Reese need to be so active in free agency
Jimmy Googs : 4/14/2014 2:39 pm : link

Thanks Jerry.
He made 8.5 million last year
Canton : 4/14/2014 2:41 pm : link
And other than one career year, his production has been pedestrian.
Yuck.
Ten Ton Hammer : 4/14/2014 2:42 pm : link
.
Well he actually had a pretty decent year in 2012.
Curtis in VA : 4/14/2014 2:42 pm : link
He tore is ACL last year.
Guy can't stay healthy.

it cant hurt.. if he is cheap.. he can compete for a roster spot..
sure
GiantsFan84 : 4/14/2014 2:51 pm : link
god forbid someone goes down in camp an additional veteran would be nice. it's not like he would get anything other than the minimum.
Vet minimum only
sjnyfan : 4/14/2014 2:58 pm : link
he has talent of course but a long injury list:

Missed time his first two years because of his knee
Hip surgery in 2010
IR after 2 concussions in three weeks in 2011
Torn ACL last year

In seven seasons he's only played 16 games twice but one of those years was a pro bowl season and he'll only be 28 at the start of this season. For that, I understand the interest but I would most certainly be cautious.
Reese is trying to cover all bases before the draft.
yatqb : 4/14/2014 2:59 pm : link
We still need an X receiver to replace Nicks, and a vet with speed can't hurt.
Would be a good pickup
prdave73 : 4/14/2014 2:59 pm : link
If healthy and for the right price, why not. When healthy this guy can play. Good Wr depth.
Seems worth investigating
Enoch : 4/14/2014 2:59 pm : link
I could see being happy with an incentive-laden short-term deal that allows Rice to rebuild value and prove that he can stay healthy and allows the Giants to hedge their bet on Randle and/or bridge the gap from Nicks to a Rookie.

Bring him in for the medical staff to take a look at. If they think there's a reasonable chance that Rice can have a productive year, start talking numbers. Given the shape of the guy's career, I can't imagine that any other teams are putting much guaranteed money on the table.
I'm with the why
old man : 4/14/2014 3:10 pm : link
not group; if vet min.
Camp comp, veteran presence for young wides(just because he hasnt played much doesnt mean doesnt mean hes not learned things).
Excellent football player,
kmed : 4/14/2014 3:11 pm : link
extremely injury prone. When healthy, he's a beast on the outside.
if healthy
Bleedin Blue : 4/14/2014 3:15 pm : link
and on the cheap Why Not????
For vet min
phil fromphilly : 4/14/2014 3:17 pm : link
with playing time incentives it's a no brainer. Could be a great pickup. If he gets hurt, just move on.
Sure, why not?
GiantJake : 4/14/2014 3:17 pm : link
I have no problem if he comes in on a minimum contract and tries to make the team. The Giants will only sign him at their price and with his injury history, it won't be much more than veteran minimum. Guys like Rice and Manningham are at a point where they have to prove they can still play in the league. Good, they are cheap and motivated. Let them push Rueben Randle. You can never have enough competition and if they don't perform...they get cut.
For the right price
hd9009 : 4/14/2014 3:18 pm : link
Yes, then OL or Donald in 1st and I'm happy
BBI Update

on this story...
New York Giants Interested in Sidney Rice - ( New Window )
Let him
Metnut : 4/14/2014 3:26 pm : link
and Manningham compete with each other during camp. If we get lucky, at least one of them will be a weapon for us.
Some team will pay
mrvax : 4/14/2014 3:29 pm : link
more than vet minimum. Maybe not much more. Something like an incentive laden contract tied to playing time.

BTW: If you look at his stats, it's weird. Pedestrian to OK every year except this unreal 2009 season where he has 83 catches for 1312 yards.
Sidney Rice - ( New Window )
I have always liked Rice
GiantTuff1 : 4/14/2014 3:33 pm : link
he has a certain x factor about him that allows him to raise his level of play.

If he is healthy and checks out, fingers crossed, I think he improves the corps.
He's never had good QB play
kmed : 4/14/2014 3:33 pm : link
and been healthy at the same time.
Why not, and of course you don't overpay
PatersonPlank : 4/14/2014 3:34 pm : link
But why not.
why not?
UConn4523 : 4/14/2014 3:38 pm : link
its not like we'd give him a ton of money. I'm fine with it if healthy, which he would be if we signed him.

Not that weird.. Favre was there that year and he was awesome. He never had a QB playing at that level any other year he's been around.
He'd
AcidTest : 4/14/2014 3:43 pm : link
be a camp body signed for vet minimum in all likelihood. As someone said, he has a long injury history. I would pass, but it's not like we'd be guaranteeing anything. Reese is loading up on second tier FAs, which is fine. Two or three should make the 53. The rest will be cut. If they do anything, then maybe another team or the Giants will pick them up mid season.
Rice
pganut : 4/14/2014 3:49 pm : link
I remember the bomb he caught for a TD against us in 2007 on like the second play of the game from Tarvaris Jackson. Tarvaris Freakin' Jackson. Ugh.
i'd rather him at camp than Manningham
UConn4523 : 4/14/2014 3:57 pm : link
more upside with Rice, and would be nice to see what he can do with a real QB.
6' 4" never hurt either
GiantTuff1 : 4/14/2014 4:07 pm : link
Can you say green zone target?
if he's healthy
GMANinDC : 4/14/2014 4:08 pm : link
he can beat out MM and JJ..
Should fit right in!
TC : 4/14/2014 4:10 pm : link
"Rice has been injury prone throughout his career. He has missed significant time with knee, hip, and concussion issues."
Injury history discouraging
Jupiter : 4/14/2014 4:10 pm : link
Definitely talent worthy of a starter in the league. Unless the light bulb suddenly goes on for Randle, all Rice would have to do is make it through training camp in order to be the starter for the Giants, but the injury history is a real turn off. If he had a bad attitude, that might be easier to deal with than injuries.

If Seattle is putting out feelers now but gets no takers, he will be a definite post draft cut. Sit back and wait. Then offer a low risk contract.

GMANinDC : 4/14/2014 4:16 pm : link
he's a FA..
Paul Dottino
Eric from BBI : Admin : 4/14/2014 4:21 pm : link
says he suggested Rice or Miles Austin as a cheap veteran late in FA. Says Austin may be the safer bet...he may be right.

Of those two? Austin is DEFINITELY a better player, but Austin's issue is that he's constantly hurt.
IF healthy
BillyBoy8384 : 4/14/2014 4:25 pm : link
Im a hundred percent sure he can become Eli's big WR that we need. Dont break the bank...1yr 2 mil with incentives
When most teams . . . .
TC : 4/14/2014 4:29 pm : link
pick up a veteran FA, they give him a locker.

The Giants reserve a hospital bed!
I would rather have a guy
GiantTuff1 : 4/14/2014 4:29 pm : link
who has had bad luck with random injuries than one who's hamstring is chronically injured each year.

I'd prefer Rice to Austin.
What does Austin have left?
Phil from WNY : 4/14/2014 4:29 pm : link
Seems to have been a shell of his old self the last couple of years. If he checks out, he's worth a look.
.
arcarsenal : 4/14/2014 4:33 pm : link
I think I'd take Rice over Austin if they were both 100% healthy.
I'll
AnishPatel : 4/14/2014 4:37 pm : link
pass on both and see if we can draft some, and bring in undrafted FAs. I don't want injury prone guys.
I'd pass on both also...
rptl530 : 4/14/2014 4:42 pm : link
but in either case it seems a "no harm, no foul" type of situation.

At least it had better be.
You guys want everyone to play for the vet
HomerJones45 : 4/14/2014 4:50 pm : link
minimum with incentives.
Why do so many of us seem obsessed to include the comment
Jimmy Googs : 4/14/2014 4:51 pm : link
"...but we shouldn't overpay" regarding any potential free agent transaction thread?

Everybody on BBI who has recommended that the Giants overpay a player lately, please raise your hands...

I'd
Toth029 : 4/14/2014 4:53 pm : link
Take Austin over him too. Plays hard. But both are always nicked up so it isn't ideal.
