Lagares just drove a deep 2 bagger into the gap in right center. 2nd and 3rd, one out.. down 1-0. Granderson had the 3rd out in his glove and then smashed into the wall and it came out.

Chris Young went 5-5 last night with 2 HR's.. sounds like he's ready to come back.
Tied up.
arcarsenal : 4/14/2014 10:10 pm : link
.
Need Chris Young in there right now
Rflairr : 4/14/2014 10:12 pm : link
Offense is brutal.
Yeah, I never thought I'd be clamoring for Chris Young..
arcarsenal : 4/14/2014 10:18 pm : link
But I do think he can bounce back and put up a solid season this year. We could use him.
DW.. gotta get at least 1 run home here.
arcarsenal : 4/14/2014 10:24 pm : link
.
WTF
Rflairr : 4/14/2014 10:25 pm : link
how does he not score on that? Are you kidding me??
He had a nice
ZGiants98 : 4/14/2014 10:26 pm : link
approach in spring training. Worked with Carew all offseason to go the other way. Who knows? The guy was a 30 home run bat to that long ago and is still pretty young. Anything to get Eric Young out of the lineup.
Ugh
Rflairr : 4/14/2014 10:30 pm : link
We may have fucked up signing Granderson. He's been scary bad
I'm going to give Granderson a few more weeks..
arcarsenal : 4/14/2014 10:33 pm : link
I expected a lot of strikeouts but he's not THIS bad. Hopefully he'll improve a bit. He's just chasing everything right now.. he's trying too hard to hit everything out of the park.
Absolutely.
ZGiants98 : 4/14/2014 10:38 pm : link
Granderson is in a huge funk. He's on pace for like a 1000 strikeouts while batting .100. No way he's this bad.
I love that
ZGiants98 : 4/14/2014 10:44 pm : link
with all the pissing and moaning(myself included) Mejia is the 5th starter, Lagares is in CF everyday(and I really doubt thats changing regardless of what Collins wants) and Flores is starting every single day at SS in AAA clearly being viewed as a possible solution.
This lineup has been so bad
ZGiants98 : 4/14/2014 10:54 pm : link
My god. The heart of our order Murphy, Wright , and Granderson have been terrible. 11 RBIS total between them. D'Arnaud went 0 for the first week and a half. Tejada is hitting like .190. Eric Young is batting like .180. Our whole offense has been Lagares and a couple late inning magic games from Duda and Ike.

Its amazing we are just under .500. We have a brutal schedule this month. If we come out of it even close to .500 Ill be thrilled. We can't hit this bad forever. We've been terrible.
Hey.. some runs.
arcarsenal : 4/14/2014 11:14 pm : link

Chris Young
Rflairr : 4/14/2014 11:23 pm : link
2-2 already tonight
Holy crap.
ZGiants98 : 4/14/2014 11:24 pm : link
Young still batting .1000. 2-2 tonight so far.
Tejada
Rflairr : 4/14/2014 11:24 pm : link
.178 now
yeah and I guess I spoke too soon
ZGiants98 : 4/14/2014 11:26 pm : link
on Flores. Weirdly Cambell is starting at SS tonight. Hopefully just a one day thing.
Nimmo
ZGiants98 : 4/14/2014 11:32 pm : link
shutting up all the pissy whiners. 2-5 again. Crushing the ball almost hitting .400.
Typical Mets
Rflairr : 4/14/2014 11:53 pm : link
as soon as Young is ready to come back. Two OFs get hurt. Unreal
Really??
ZGiants98 : 4/14/2014 11:54 pm : link
Granderson and Lagares gone? Our luck Lagares will be out a month now.
Lagares pulled a hamstring
ZGiants98 : 4/14/2014 11:57 pm : link
he'll be on the DL.
Thought we'd never see Duda in LF again
ZGiants98 : 4/15/2014 12:00 am : link
My oh my. Tomorrow's outfield will be Duda, E Young, and Abreu!!
Likely Kirk
Rflairr : 4/15/2014 12:01 am : link
before Abreu. How is Puello doing down there?
Unbelievable.
arcarsenal : 4/15/2014 12:02 am : link
.
Hitting .275
ZGiants98 : 4/15/2014 12:04 am : link
Way to early to call up Puello. After the all-star break maybe. Don't be so sure about Abreu. He's hitting .500 and has an opt-out of his contract by the end of the month. He'll be up sooner than later.
Flores is in a huge slump right
ZGiants98 : 4/15/2014 12:07 am : link
now but yet again comes through with a single with the bases loaded. Some dudes are just clutch and rise above when the pressure is on. He is an RBI machine. I don't think we have anyone on the team like that currently.
So Granderson managed to hurt his ribcage, wrist AND knee..
arcarsenal : 4/15/2014 12:09 am : link
...in one fell swoop.

Impressive. Can't make this shit up.
Granderson out for the year.
ZGiants98 : 4/15/2014 12:11 am : link
Lagares expected back after the break (all-star game)
That's real? Or you're just guessing?
arcarsenal : 4/15/2014 12:19 am : link
.
Im totally kidding
ZGiants98 : 4/15/2014 12:25 am : link
but as a Mets fan that would be our luck. lol
AANnndddd. Now the defense killing us. Ball falls
ZGiants98 : 4/15/2014 12:30 am : link
right in front of Duda.
Torres
Rflairr : 4/15/2014 12:37 am : link
is going to be worn out before the all star break
Collins figured out
ZGiants98 : 4/15/2014 12:41 am : link
Torres can get out lefties and since Rice and Lannan have sucked, Torres is his new whipping boy!
Why did Collins
ZGiants98 : 4/15/2014 12:42 am : link
substitue Recker for Darnud like half way through the game just as D'Arnaud seems to be getting hot with the bat?
I don't blame Collins
sshin05 : 4/15/2014 12:43 am : link
Torres has been a pretty effective reliever. Him and German have been really good other than valverde and farnsworth.
Holy crap!
ZGiants98 : 4/15/2014 12:48 am : link
Murphy has made 4 ridiculous defensive plays in this game.
Syndergaard was solid
Headhunter : 4/15/2014 7:48 am : link
he was sitting in the upper 90's and his last pitch was clocked at 100mph
Just a thought
Headhunter : 4/15/2014 8:00 am : link
how would this project. Your staters for 2015
Gee, Niese,Mejia, DeGrom & Montero

your 7th inning,8th inning & closer are Wheeler, Syndergaard & Harvey

with minimal offense and solid defense that is a 95 win team. Now before you kill me we all know this is just an exercise
Too much of a waste
pjcas18 : 4/15/2014 8:03 am : link
of wheeler, thor, and harvey.

and they can't pitch every day.

That configuration has a better chance to lose 95 games than to win 95 IMO
Do we know that they couldn't
Headhunter : 4/15/2014 8:10 am : link
pitch every day? Let's say they could. You get 6 innings from your starter and it's game over. How you can say that is a 95 loss configuration is beyond me. I couldn't conceive of them losing 67 games
Mejia
pjcas18 : 4/15/2014 8:15 am : link
degrom and montero have proven zero as major league starters, Niese and Gee are solid rotation guys - I think both are in the middle of the rotation, on a good team the back of the rotation, but that usually gets you .500 or around there.

And then you're seriously questioning if they could pitch every day, 162 appearances?

the record of 106 appearances by a pitcher was set in 1974. Pretty sure none of the three you mention in the pen would get close.

60 appearances is more likely, 80 tops.
Headhunter
Mike in NY : 4/15/2014 8:15 am : link
In warming up a pitcher generally throws about an inning or two worth of pitches (although not all at full speed). Assuming they each pitch 120 games in your scenario you are talking aboout the equivalent of 300+ innings each if you include warming up
to put it in perspective
pjcas18 : 4/15/2014 8:20 am : link
the most dominating pitcher I've seen in my lifetime was Pedro Martinez.

In his hey day, the Red Sox won 80% of his starts. he was 23 - 4 his best year - and I'm talking games he started but his team won, was 80% (he made 29 starts).

So basically you're saying each of Niese, Gee, Degrom, Montero, and Mejia would all make around 32 starts and be each around 19 - 13.

What you're suggesting would be nice, but it's unrealistic to say the least.

First off we all know this will never happen
Headhunter : 4/15/2014 8:22 am : link
these guys are hopefully the core of the rotation for a decade, but that would make a 9 inning game a 6 inning game. Relievers converted from starters, is probably the path most relievers followed
Oh yeah I forgot
Headhunter : 4/15/2014 8:25 am : link
you make Steven Matz your Loogy :)
Yeah
pjcas18 : 4/15/2014 8:25 am : link
but you have a much better chance of having a lead in the 7th if Harvey, Thor and Wheeler are your starters than 3 other guys.

and you have Familia in the pen who is a converted starter and maybe someone like Matz (if he can't sustain the workload of a starter - his stuff is electric). even Mejia simply if he's odd man out in a rotation of better pitchers.
Did you see where Warthen
Headhunter : 4/15/2014 8:28 am : link
put Matz in the same sentence as Kershaw and he didn't back off of it?
No I didn't read that, it
pjcas18 : 4/15/2014 8:31 am : link
would be nice, but by the time Kershaw was Matz's age he had 1 CY young and 45 major league wins.

I love Matz's stuff, but I'd like to see him just stay healthy another year, and build arm strength.

He would be an awesome addition to the rotation or the pen.

Syndergaard, Wheeler and Harvey in the pen would be a waste.
arcarsenal : 4/15/2014 8:34 am : link
Those 3 should all be in the rotation. Would make more sense for Mejia/deGrom, etc to be in the pen.. even though I still don't want Mejia in there.
meijia's
sshin05 : 4/15/2014 8:45 am : link
upside is a top of the rotation starter. If he can get his control down, he has swing and miss as good as anybody on the team. BTW, was last night's game the first time in a while, no Met pitcher gave up a homerun?
Don't forget the bench
mikeshecky : 4/15/2014 8:47 am : link
Wright, Grandy and Murphy can hit the bench. Think of the pinch hitting possibilities.

By the way - made me realize how awful the Mets are when trying to think of the three best hitters on the team. So depressing.
I've been as big a proponent of Mejia in the rotation as any..
arcarsenal : 4/15/2014 8:50 am : link
I guess the question is.. what happens if Harvey does come back and Thor and Montero are as advertised. You've got Harvey, Thor, Wheeler, Montero, Niese, Gee, Mejia... can't have a 7 man rotation so do you trade someone or send someone(s) to the pen?

Odds of all 7 of those guys being healthy at the same time are probably slim though,
Here is the Warthen
Headhunter : 4/15/2014 9:26 am : link
Mets LHP Steven Matz‘s stuff compares to Clayton Kershaw, “there is no doubt in my mind,” Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen told MetsBlog’s Robert Brender this past weekend in Los Angeles. “I hate to make those comparisons, but I just did. It’s so easy, so explosive coming out of his hand. He’s exciting to me,” Warthen […]
Nice to see
Metnut : 4/15/2014 9:38 am : link
the team get a win. Grandy's injury looks like no big deal. He could probably use a break anyway. Sit him the rest of the road trip and see if he's ready to go vs Atlanta.

Lagares injury is really unfortunate. He's off to such a good start and hitting so well that you hate to see him get taken out of rhthym for a few weeks. Hopefully if he goes to the DL, it'll just be a mininum 15 day stint. Maybe we get really lucky and its day to day. I'd expect to see Kirk brought up in his place is Lagares goes to the DL.

I wasn't able to watch the game last night? How did Wheeler look? His line didn't look that great.
Lagares getting hurt
steve in ky : 4/15/2014 9:49 am : link
is just so frustrating. The kid looked to maybe be the odd man out in the OF entering this season and he accepted the challenge and responded by being the teams best hitter to start the season in addition to being the best glove only to go down to injury.
Hopefully Lagares has a strain, not a pull
Phil in Joisey : 4/15/2014 11:33 am : link
It's not like he collapsed. Beat out the d.p. and stayed in the game on first base for another pitch or two before signalling he was in some difficulty. A shame the way he came out of the gate his season, but hopefully not a major setback.
Did somebody seriously suggest Harvey, Wheeler, and Thor in the pen?
oipolloi : 4/15/2014 11:35 am : link
yikes. i have heard it all now
No one "suggested" it

double switch so torrees could pitch more than the 7th since wheelers spot was due up in 8th
