Sounds like this one may be close to being a done deal. I don't know how much this guy has left in the tank but I think this is solid depth at the most. We shall see.
they wouldn't draft Donald. Unless they think he's the best player with Jenkins, Hankins, Patterson, Kuhn and Williams in the mix it wouldn't seem like the 1st round pick would go to another tackle.

Why wouldn't they draft Donald? Williams is 33, from the rumors of it, it's a one year deal and he's a bigger guy like Hankins. Donald is more in the Jenkins mold.
Patterson is also signed to one year and Kuhn hasn't seen the field much so we don't know what he can do. If the Giants see Donald as the BPA, he'll be taken.
a great addition for a year considering it would be a cheap deal. They would probably still have to draft a guy, but signing him means you wouldn't necessarily have to take a DT in the first three rounds.
Solid rotational player at this point in his career who rarely gets hurt and good vs the run allowing us more flexibility to take the best player on the board at 12.
“I’m not sure what’s going to happen,” Williams said. “I played 11 years in Minnesota. It didn’t work out there, and this is my first visit with another team. I’m not sure how to feel. It’s all new to me.”
“I knew eventually a team would reach out and show interest,” Williams said. “But I wasn’t worried about it. Either way, whether something works out [Tuesday] or doesn’t work out and I retire, I’m comfortable with that. I’m not a guy who’s worried about going home and leaving football behind. Football isn’t everything.”
“I had a good visit [Monday night],” Williams said. “It’s different. That’s for sure. But I would like to keep playing, so we’ll see how it goes [Tuesday].”
Sounds like Williams is ready to retire if the Giants don't make him an offer. At first glance, I'm a bit surprised because he started 15 games last year and had 3.5 sacks. He's been extremely durable throughout his career.
The guy was such a beast in his younger years. No RB could run through the Williams Wall and Kevin Williams was a phenomenal rushing DT as well. I remember that many thought Williams should've won the Defensive Rookie of the Year over Terrell Suggs.
I think it does make it less likely the Giants pick Donald. Â
Yep. The same scenario as last year. A big space eater to spell Hankins and stop the us from getting run over. Like two years ago. The price for letting Joseph walk. It worked OK last year. We will see. Bandaid solution like a lot of our moves, to cover up the lousy replacement drafting and FA signings, the last five years by the GM.
I hope they get it done. It's April. This is the kind of thing you can get done in April. He'll be a contributor if he's signed. He won't ride the bench.
Williams has had a great career, and would be a good depth signing. But this has no impact on the draft. Williams would be another second tier FA signing brought to camp on a low cost deal with little guaranteed money. The same is true for Jerry, Patterson, Ayers, both Browns, MM, and Kellen Davis. These are vets trying to resurrect their career, or squeeze out one final season before retirement. They come cheaply, so there's no harm in signing them. But some will not make the 53 IMO.
can't believe people want the giants to draft ebron in the first. He may be a good player but they shouldn't draft him. He hasnt gotten the same press as Shockey and i don't feel he is the same impact player as him. Te is def a need but there are more important needs than a Receiving Te. Just my opinion

Lousy replacement drafting? You mean like Joseph was for Cofield? FA signings? You mean like that terrible Chris Canty?
I swear, some fans are the most ungrateful a-holes. I bet you were too busy complaining about Bradshaw not stopping at the one yard line to realize we won a Super Bowl.
I had a good visit [Monday night],” Williams said. “It’s different. That’s for sure.
I really wish I could pick his brain about what is different between the culture in Minnesota and here. Specifically, I'd like to know if he thinks we have a winning culture or not, and why. I have my own opinions but it would be so interesting to get an honest evaluation from a guy who has been a loyal team player and leader in an organization like Minny over the years that he's been there.
Second, it is interesting to see guys like Williams receive virtually no interest at all around the league. Shows that teams really value youth, to the point of even neglecting a guy like Williams. Is this part of a strategy we have - to find and leverage the last years of older players - ones who might still have something in the tank and give them something to play for?
Is he worth the vet minimum? I sure hope so, and I hope that's what we end up paying him too, although I'm not too sure about that.
my interpretation was more that he's been with Minny all this time, simply being in a different place/team/environment is different, without any real depth behind the reasons why. Kinda like getting out of a long relationship and dating - do you jump back in it with the first girl even if she's great...you probably do if you don't have a lot of other suitors but probably would prefer to play around a bit.
Are we starting to see a philosophy with JR&Co in regards to DT? Â
does not really preclude them from drafting a rd. 1 or 2 defensive tackle if they believe in one. Maybe they want Donald, but have reason to think he won't be there at 12.
Even if he just holds his ground at the line, he's wide body enough to likely force the RB to try to swing around him, then his DT mate or an LB can close whatever hole there might be near him.
Any push or penetration he can muster in addition to that is a bonus.
i just can't see them going defense in this draft Â
the defense right now if Williams is signed has enough depth for this season at every position, with the exception of another possible DL being added DE or DT, but I can't imagine it's a high pick, more of a developmental type

You really think the defensive front is in good shape? The Pass Rush looks shaky at best. Right now the most reliable rusher is Cullen Jenkins. They have no idea what to expect from Moore, Kiwanuka, or JPP. Two of those three were awful last year.
That's not even debatable. The chips will fall where they fall, but Jerry Reese will not be passing up superior defensive players for the sake of drafting offense. That's a good way to short sightedly run your franchise into the ground.
For DE, JPP, Moore, Kiwanuka, and Ayers is a solid rotation at DE. Moore can be the pass rush specialist, Ayers the run specialist with Kiwi spelling JPP as needed. If healthy JPP can be dominant. Yes they are an injury away from being thin, but you can say that about just about any position on any team. It all hinges on JPP. Graziano wrote an article about this and he is completely correct.
For future years I agree there is a need, but with so many current needs on offense I think they should go there.
For DT, Jenkins, Hankins, Patterson, and Williams (if signed) is just fine for this year. There are always guys out there like Patterson and Williams that can be signed as stop gaps. If Hankins is who they think he is, they are fine here.
they can not continue to neglect the offense this offseason Â
just as many ??? on the Defensive line as there are on the Offensive line. If the Giants deem the BPA is on the defensive side of the ball, it would be short sighted to go offense...especially in a draft that seems to be as deep as any for WR and Oline.
and would love to add him... He should have 1 or 2 good years left in the tank. Our run defense would get much better with this signing. We need more depth at DT and this would be a big help.
As for Donald... Williams is a completely different type of DT. He is more of the Hankins type. Donald would be a pass rushing type that can flex out to DE also imo.
If they sign him, he will be a good rotational player here with Hankins/Jenkins/Patterson. That would make a decent run defense and could push the pocket. I don't think this would have any effect on the draft either, if they love Donald like BBI does, and he is there, they would still grab him, the question is of coarse, do they like him enough to grab him because I am one who does think he will be there.
If they think that Donald could rush from both the inside and outside, then I really do think he would be a great pick. I am not certain, but with his quickness and his arms not really being that short, I do not see why he could not act like a defensive end also, then he could take the role that Tuck played here and possibly play it better, that would make a lot of sense be cause it could save a roster spot, if need be, you then could keep 8 or 9 defensive linemen if he is a swingman.
regarding the 1-tech DT spot. Draft a guy you want to start, and sign a cheap past-his-prime veteran for depth/rotation. Much more economical way to deal with a low-impact position than paying for the 2nd contract of guys like Joseph and Cofield. Pay for your pass defenders; get your run defenders in the bargain bin.
If you want a big second contract, you must be sacking the QB, otherwise it just is not worth it. This is why a team like the Redskins never get it right, they have made a position like defensive tackle a huge free agent target, not maybe they have finally changed their ways, but they did pay Coefield, they did give that absurd contract to Haynesworth. Didn't they even take Cornelius Griffith away from us?
Running back is a good position to target in free agency, why, you can get a very good and proven running back pretty cheap, now that they are all rotational players, they simply are not worth a big contract, unless your name is Adrian Petersen, but wide receiver is a position you should target in the draft. If you get a good one, at least they are cheap their first contract, but all the top wide outs get big money now, same as cornerback. Defensive End, Left tackle, cornerback, quarterback are the big positions now. But a great weakside linebacker, or middle linebacker in the 4-3 and a free safety are positions that if you have a great one, its a huge benefit to being a very good team, the other positions I mentioned are almost necessities in today's game.

They can go D easily round 1 and still stock up on quality offense thereafter:
Rd 1: Aaron Donald
Rd 2: Joel Bitonio/Kuandijo/Yankey/Jackson/James -OR- Jordan Matthews/Davante Adams
Rd 3: Moncreif/Martavius Bryant/Cody Lattimer/Landry -OR OL if WR rd 2- Trai Turner/Dokata Dozier/Jake Mewhort
Rd 4 Crockett Gilmore
i dont think any of those receivers will be there round 3 Â
just because theres a lot of talent in this WR class means that all of this deep array of talent will be there. a lot of nfl teams could use a WR and a lot of ball clubs seem to be quite high on m.bryant and lattimer. I bet both will get picked round 2.
They are plugging holes in their depth chart so that they do not have to reach to fill a position in the draft. I therefore hope that they can sign Williams, so that they can go for the best available player at # 12. That could be Lewan, Ebron, Carr, etc.
Man, he was a beast a few years ago. The Williams Wall? Fantastic

He'll be injured with a paper cut signing his contract and miss all of training camp
I think TE and WLB are bigger needs personally, but no doubt we need an OL or two

I don't know enough about DT play from system to system, or whether or not it's basically plug-and-play with these guys.
Can anyone more knowledgeable than me drop in on this one?
