Knicks news: Odom and Knicks close to 2 year deal

nygiants16 : 4/15/2014 9:27 am
According to ESPN the Knicks and Odom are close to a 2 year deal which will basically be rest of the season and a team option for next season...

this gives the Knicks 2 months to watch Odom and work him out and see what he has left...if he falters or doesnt look good Knicks simply do not have to pick up his option..
Alright i was about to say...

2 year deal to a recovering crackhead whose been out of the league? O rlly Phil
I don't have high hopes for him,
kmed : 4/15/2014 9:30 am : link
but he's only 34 years old, whats the risk?
The truth is
Jay on the Island : 4/15/2014 9:34 am : link
the Knicks have no cap room this offseason and they have to make moves like this because they don't really have any other options.
I think the main reason for this is....
Greg from LI : 4/15/2014 9:36 am : link
Phil wants to bring in a guy who knows the triangle well. It's a complex offense and takes some time to learn, and he wants someone on the roster who can help explain it to the other guys.
There is absolutely no risk
nygiants16 : 4/15/2014 9:38 am : link
its a vet minimum deal and if he falters or just cant do it anymore the Knicks dont pick up the option...

I expect Phil to bring in a couple of his veterans from his past to help...dont be surprised to see Derek Fisher signed...
And so it begins

likely would want at least a couple guys loyal to him on the roster. Doing so might allow him you have a better pulse of the lockeroom even with his being a little further removed now as GM instead of the more familiar position of his being the coach.

Not much risk here... Phil wants to bring some triangle guys in and he's starting now.
I think it's less about the triangle
nyfan76 : 4/15/2014 10:15 am : link
and more about the personal relationship between Phil and Odom. I wouldn't see Odom going to some random place right now.
no risk..
Italianju : 4/15/2014 10:26 am : link
with some upside.

Could still fill a role off the bench if he has his act together.
expect a lot of these types of signings
nygiants16 : 4/15/2014 10:32 am : link
this off season...nothing big but a lot of Vets are going to be brought in with Kerr as the head coach to help teach the triangle..

Hopefully Odom will not take JR under his wing
He
NJGiantFan84 : 4/15/2014 11:02 am : link
will be a great influence on JR Smith for sure!

I have no interest in bringing him here. I guess the risk is minimal (depending on contract) but I don't see the upside. He has too many issues and the last thing I want on this team is more issues.

Obviously not. It's a flier in every sense of the word.

Don't expect salvation. They're kind of hard wired into this cap situation for another year.
RoFL Are you kidding
Mason : 4/15/2014 11:29 am : link
This is Jackson first signing? Why do these guys love to spend Dolan's money on their reclamation projects? With Walsh it was Bender. Layden had Utah crew.
When Phil walks into that locker room,
Doomster : 4/15/2014 11:35 am : link
he does realize that it's been 40 years since the last Championship, with no light at the end of the tunnel......this team should have been blown up years ago, and have a complete rebuild, like the Celtics are now doing....
The problem might be more with your expectations.
kmed : 4/15/2014 11:36 am : link
What were you expecting to be our first signing? Jackson will have a plan and we have yet to see it start to unfold. Just be patient young, scarred Knicks fan, be patient.
Why does the first signing have to be some statement?
Ten Ton Hammer : 4/15/2014 11:39 am : link
People put way too much stock in things like that. There's probably not going to be some hero trade.
how can anyone dislike this signing
Sgrcts : 4/15/2014 11:41 am : link
Its a no risk signing with a guy with immense experience in the triangle, which the Knicks will 1000% be running next season.
Look I like Odom, used to watch him play when was a kid
Mason : 4/15/2014 11:49 am : link
But at tgis point, what does his signing serve? He is shot and I ain't taking Cuban's word for this, my own eyes showed me. The off court issues aside, how is Odom a step in the right direction? Vin Baker had more in the tank and less problems.

arcarsenal : 4/15/2014 11:51 am : link
Mason, what exactly is the risk here?

I don't understand why people get all up in arms about signings that aren't going to hurt the team if they don't work out. This is not going to deter the Knicks from doing ANYTHING.

Get mad about throwing away 1st round picks for huge pussies like Andrea Bargnani. This? Stop it.

No financial risk. There is a character risk. Lockerroom cancer's are very detrimental to teams. I hope he is in recovery and doing very well and I'm all for 2nd chances. I just don't see much of an upside here.

But I also don't expect big splash or statement signings. Little things like these are all we can hope for. And in 2013, these "little" signings were greatly beneficial. Let's hope for more of that.

Arc,
NJGiantFan84 : 4/15/2014 12:03 pm : link
I don't think too many people are mad about it. But that doesn't mean we cannot disagree with bringing in a player with no upside, in our opinion. I don't think it matters much, but I'd rather he not be signed.
People are out of their damn minds
nygiants16 : 4/15/2014 12:10 pm : link
and they wonder why you cant rebuild in New York...

This has no effect on future moves or anything...it is a flier on a guy that has played for Jackson and had success under Jackson..thats why he is being signed...

he is also someone who knows teh triangle and can help teach the triangle...

People who expect a blow up this off season really needs to temper their expecations...its going to be the same team next year because their rebuild will come in 2015 when every contract is off the books...

people expecting Chandler Bargs and Stat traded this off season need to rethink their thinking because its not going to happen...the blow up will come after next season when they have a ton of cap space...

People killing jackson for this signing is a joke..

What exactly is the downside here? They determine he can't help the team, he's gone. That's it.
Also if his head is on straight
nygiants16 : 4/15/2014 12:15 pm : link
which is why it is going to be a team option for next year...with the Knicks probably bringing in a rookie head coach Kerr will need veterans like Odom who have played in the triangle to help teach it...

Expect Fisher to get a call from jackson as well...
Who
NJGiantFan84 : 4/15/2014 12:20 pm : link
is killing Phil? If we disagree with a signing we are now killing Jackson? Come on. Nobody is acting like this is the end of anything.

We simply don't see upside and don't like the signing. I'd rather not bring someone with deep issues onto a team full of guys with issues. I don't see how that is killing Jackson or getting angry. I think it's a perfectly reasonable criticism of a guy who has been out of basketball for 2 years due to a serious drug addiction.
Shouldn't it be up to Phil and the coaches
Ten Ton Hammer : 4/15/2014 12:22 pm : link
to see if he has upside?

It's due diligence.

Yeah, he has issues. That's exactly why he has what amounts to a 10-day contract. If they determine he has value, they carry him for next season. If not, he's gone.
i was saying in general not just this board
nygiants16 : 4/15/2014 12:23 pm : link
But Mason killed Jackson saying he is just spending Dolan's money...

other board called it a dumb signing and Jackson is already failing...

People claiming they need to start by blowing this team up dont realize that after enxt year teh team will blow up by itself with contracts coming off the books...
anda gain when they are evaluating him
nygiants16 : 4/15/2014 12:25 pm : link
to seew hat kind of shape he will be in and if he can keep his nose clean he will be away from teh team...they are going to take the 2 months until they have to pick up his option to evaluate him...if they feel he cant help or will hinder the team they simply do not pick up his option...

there is literally zero downside to this..
My bad,
NJGiantFan84 : 4/15/2014 12:37 pm : link
I mis-interpreted the OP. I thought the deal was for next season & an option for the 2015 season. I get it now. SO the signing is for the rest of this season w/ an option for next season. That makes more sense now.

Maybe i should of been more clear then in my opening post...

yes its the rest of this year so 2 games and 2 months of off season...then if he stays clean and gets healthy and looks like he is trying to get into good shape the Knicks will pick up his option and even then its a minimum deal so he can be released at any time..

Your post was clear, I just keep thinking of this season as over already! TTH's post calling it the equal to a 10-day contract set me straight.

Apologies all. This makes sense to me now, as nothing they do this year can hinder the team in any way and it's basically a try out to see if he is worth signing for next season.

Why??
