Paul Schwartz on NFL radio this morning re: Giants

TheManUpstairs : 4/15/2014 9:34 am
It was Ross Tucker and Bob Papa with him. Tucker, in particular, said the same thing 80 times about the G-men free agents signings (the word of the day was, "weird"), and kept going on about not re-signing Tuck. Schwartz, properly, responded that the Giants didn't think Tuck would be worth the money going forward. Schwartz clearly didn't think they'd take Ebron in the 1st, seemed to be leaning WR. Lots of discussion of the QB situation, mainly from the standpoint of "why bring in these guys when you drafted Nassib and have Painter". Schwartz was more like, "Well, they need guys to throw until Eli's ready."

Tucker comes off as a ditz sometimes. But he's an Eagles fan so take any giants commentary with a grain of salt.
It's really that simple at QB

They need guys that can get the skill players some work while Eli recovers. And they are looking at two guys who have experience in certain aspects of our offense, guys that can help during camp for that reason IMO.

If one of them earns a spot, so be it. But it says nothing about Nassib or Eli or anything else I've been reading here the past day or so
Painter and Nassib can't

You generally need four arms in camp.

Especially that new wideout they inked. I think his name is Shiva. Hell of a catch radius.
I hope it's Flynn

No, it is not. Practice isn't just doing individual groups like QBs practicing their fundamentals and just going to team where they will run plays. They break off into groups. Sometimes the QBs will be with the running backs practicing handoffs. Sometimes they will be throwing routes. Sometimes QB may just be with the TEs while some others will be with the WRs. Two QBs is not even close to enough during camp.

That is a very good point that I myself overlooked.
Exactly

that's all this is, it doesn't mean what people here seem to think it means.
Sorry, that last post
Sneakers O'toole : 4/15/2014 10:33 am : link
that was in response to Robbie. And now the time limit wait,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
I wouldnt be surprised if we signed both

only b/c I doubt they would both sign here knowing that at most only one of them could possibly make the team. Those guys aren't looking to be camp arms, they are trying to make a team.

Every year there are four quarterbacks in camp. Every year. This isn't new. Even when David Carr was the backup, there was Ryan Perrilloux or Anthony Wright or Rob Johnson on the back end.

This happens every year.
why has this topic sparked so much debate?
djm : 4/15/2014 11:04 am : link
the giant backup QBs are fucking terrible. Nassib is unproven and Painter is beyond bad. ELi just had surgery. The Giants are trying to upgrade the talent at the QB position. Simple as that. Some of you are trying to reinvent the wheel.
Some didn't
AnishPatel : 4/15/2014 11:08 am : link
like the Nassib pick. They saw the selection as a waste of a pick. So when they read that we are going to sign other Qbs. I am sure they think it's a knock on Nassib, that we must not like him, adding fuel to their fire that Nassib was a shitty pick.

As if to say, see, we are signing Qbs because the team is down on Nassib. It's a waste of a pick and now we are going to bring in other qbs. Some may be curious to see Nassib play, and they see bringing in 1 or 2 Qbs will take reps away from him.

Basically it all comes down to they didn't like the pick.
That might be the case for some,
kmed : 4/15/2014 11:12 am : link
but not me. I never judge picks because I'm not in a position to. That being said, the fact that we are sniffing around these vet QB's tells me that they don't believe Nassib can take over yet. It doesn't mean never, it just means now. You'd hope that a guy you put that many resources into would be ready at this point, but that's not the case.
chances are good both
aquidneck : 4/15/2014 11:21 am : link
Freeman and Flynn end up on NFL roster next year. We're not bringing in *these* guys simply to have four arms in camp. Freeman has the highest up and lowest down side. At the same price think I'd sign Flynn unless Freeman clearly has the much better tryout.

this story has legs because media think this is a commentary on Eli
Tony in Tampa : 4/15/2014 12:16 pm : link
The "Giant's think Eli's on the decline" story is still floating around. (I heard Ross Tucker refer to it on SIRUS this morning)Despite the fact that he had ankle surgery and can't participate in the OTAs so the Giants need arms in camp, it's more sexy to play up the: Eli 27 interception, Giants are concerned and want to cover themselves angle.
Yeah I said that
AnishPatel : 4/15/2014 12:21 pm : link
yesterday when I noticed it on various national media outlets. NFL.com has an article about it and then what Gilbride said.It was a decent article until the last few sentences and now the comments section is fun to read.

Discussing the issue on Monday's edition of the "Around The League Podcast," we drew a comparison between the current version of Manning and Brett Favre's 2005 to '06 nadir on a rebuilding Packers team with a crumbling offensive line and a disturbing lack of weapons.

The difference is that Favre is one of the top 10 quarterbacks in NFL history, while Eli has been one of the most overrated. If the latter bounces back, it will be to slightly above average -- not great.

Who the hell overrates him?

Outside of Giants fans and its only a small percentage of those.
I've

never in 10 years seen the national media over rate Eli. In fact, off the top of my head, I can't remember anyone outside of our fan base rating him super high and just pouring on accolades on him.
Eli is definitely overrated.
Lurts : 4/15/2014 10:14 pm : link
Just like never missing games, level headedness, come from behind wins in the fourth quarter, and Super Bowl trophies.
