I've seen the events several times, and it's still extremely uncomfortable viewing. Gut wrenching is tight. I may have to switch over for 15 mins or so.
I am still unfamiliar with a lot of it. I don't understand how the people outside the gate weren't aware of the overload of people entering the grounds. Why didn't they just close the gate?
The police opened the gates to relief the pressure in Wapping Lane. It's been a long time however, and I'm looking forward to the show to clarify my memories. Remember that in 1989, the stories, and realities, of Hooligans were still common. (In that year, a tour of schoolboys was shepherded away from home supporter at Oxford United, of all 2nd division places, and the bus route was varied, so I was told by the driver, after every game to avoid possible hooligans on the overpasses. Scared times!!!)
I honestly tried to watch this cause I am honestly interested. I quickly realized that just the thought of being in a crowd like that with forces so immense that it could stop one from breathing is to much for me. I cannot fathom the fear that would be associated with being trapped like that
sad. I have heard of it but I really never heard the whole story. Really tough to watch but very well done and the eye witnesses describing the situation and how they lost their loved ones were fantastic. Worth the watch for sure.
It's amazing how some of the Coppers alluded to their belief that the demotion of the chief who had been there for years and the promotion of Chief David Duckenfield as his successor was the primary reason for the system failure. If two asshole cops didn't "fake assault" a rookie cop for hazing purposes, this tragedy may never have happened.
