Big Blue Morning: Trade Eli for No. 1 pick?

we would not get a #1 for Eli. he makes way too much money.

Good Lord.
I don't think
odunde : 4/16/2014 10:47 am : link
either side would likely make this trade. That said, to be fair to Graziano, who takes a lot of shit on BBI (some deserved, some undeserved), he was reporting on what others said, not suggesting this was likely or possible.

Graziano went as far as to say that he though Texans would jump on the deal, but he doesn't think it would be a good decision by the Giants.
These idiots write this stuff

I think if the Giants offered Eli Manning to the Texans for the No. 1 pick in this year's draft, the Texans would say yes before the Giants ended their first sentence. The question to you, Giants fans, is if you'd trade Eli Manning for this year's No. 1 pick.

I would not, personally....any of the quarterbacks available in this year's (or any year's) draft would count themselves lucky to have half the career Manning already has had.
In this draft
old man : 4/16/2014 10:49 am : link
you may not get a #1 for Tom Brady.
Realistically, who is ''that close' to a SB team that only needs a QB that would make that deal?

NO.
In decline

I wouldn't trade a #1 for Brady or Peyton

Too old.
C'mon, it's not like Andrew Luck is out there, a sure-thing
yatqb : 4/16/2014 10:54 am : link
franchise QB. If there were I'd do the deal, for cap flexibility and the future more than anything else. We wouldn't be as good immediately (if ever) without Eli, but a transition will have to be made at some point, so if a Luck were there I'd jump at it.
This is so stupid.

I think the Texans could be a contender with a top QB. They have a ton of talent.

But the idea of trading Eli is just ridiculous. It's not happening.
If an Andrew Luck was sitting there in this draft pool,
BlueLou : 4/16/2014 10:57 am : link
you wouldn't have a prayer of getting the #1 overall pick for Eli!

du'oh!
Yeah if a Luck type of QB
Jay on the Island : 4/16/2014 11:02 am : link
was in this draft there would be no need to trade the #1 overall pick for Eli. That is the problem with this draft there is no QB worthy of that spot. If the Giants made that trade the best course of action would be to take Clowney #1 and then trade up a few spots in the 2nd round and take Mettenberger. Or they could tough it out for a year strengthen the rest of the team during the draft and wait until next years draft to address the QB position when there are better options available.

like this are why Goodell needs to move the draft back to its original date in April. People are so bored, they're throwing up all over themselves with shit like this hypothetical trade.

No way would would the Texans trade the #1 pick for Eli. And no way would the Giants make such an offer.
For the record
gidiefor : Mod : 4/16/2014 11:04 am : link
I would trade Eli - For This year's 1 and 2 plus next year's 1 and 3 from the Texans

Not that I want to see Eli go - but that would be too good an offer to pass up

This should have ended the thread. Again I blame Goodell for putting the draft in May.
People overrate the value of individual picks
Go Terps : 4/16/2014 11:06 am : link
If this trade were made, who would the Giants then draft? No one in this draft is going to come in and be a better player than Eli...at least not in the short term.

Owning the top pick in the draft is fun in April, but I'd rather have a good player.
Kind of surprised a member of the Aaron Donald Fan Club
Jimmy Googs : 4/16/2014 11:19 am : link
hasn't jumped in and said "yes" so they can be ensured of getting their guy...
Why
PaulN : 4/16/2014 11:26 am : link
Would you do something like that when there is not one clear franchise QB in this draft, and if anyone thinks that Clowny would be worth it, I ask you to please pass me the stuff you are smoking.
LOL
PaulN : 4/16/2014 11:29 am : link
Right, Aaron Donald would be worth it though. I am going to have some fun with the Aaron Donald people.

I was going to write this exactly. The draft being moved back has really accelerated the "Nothing is going on, what do I write about" articles. I hate these types of articles.
The idea of trading Eli is silly
GiantJake : 4/16/2014 11:38 am : link
but in the hypothetical, Eli's existing contract would be no problem because the Texans could just restructure and give him a new 5 year deal. The Giants taking Clowney would be fun, but Nassib isn't ready to take over. Who the hell would play QB?

There was no mention of the Giants losing their first round pick in the article.
Maybe that's why they brought in Josh Freeman

So dumb...
GiantTuff1 : 4/16/2014 12:14 pm : link
the only redeeming thing in this hypothetical article is that Bill Polian and the GM both backed up Eli saying he is clearly worth the no. 1 pick in the draft. I think that bodes well for them to think he is no where near his decline and that his arrow will be pointing even further up with the addition of a new offense.

Those are trusted guys, not this Matt Williamson character.
Josh Freeman?
Doomster : 4/16/2014 12:30 pm : link
Josh Freeman? It's hard to believe that this guy is even mentioned as a potential starter, ANYWHERE....

After the 2010 season, he was considered by many, better than Eli......all based on just one season, which will probably be his career year.....

Is this team trying for the playoffs this year, or the next? The thought of Eli being traded with no replacement, sends this team into a tailspin offensively.....the thing about Eli is, when he has his confidence, and a team in front of him, he can carry a team when it is not playing at it's best.....problem is, was 2011 his peak? Or can he recapture that magic? He never got the credit he deserved for that season....

Looking at the stats that season:

Rodgers: 4,643 yds, 45 TDs, 6 INTs

Brees: 5,476 yds, 46 TDs, 14 INTs

Brady: 5,235 yds, 39 TDs, 12 INTs

Manning: 4,933 yds, 29 TDs, 16 INTs

He was hardly mentioned with those other three.....but all he did was create comeback after comeback in the fourth quarter that season.....and then went against Rodger's and Brady in the playoffs.....he is a special QB when he is on his game...his last season and a half has not been his best.....was he trying too hard to carry a flawed team, or did he just have a bad season last year? We will find out this season....
The Freeman thing was a bit of sarcasm Doomster
Jimmy Googs : 4/16/2014 12:51 pm : link
b/c this thread is kind of silly.

but i did like your post nevertheless...
I think the article is totally legit
Dnew : 4/16/2014 1:01 pm : link
and poses a good question. If the Texans were to offer the Giants the #1 pick in the draft this year (and that's it..you can't add extra picks) would you make the deal?

What makes the Giants a better team?
GiantJake : 4/16/2014 1:06 pm : link
Eli for the next five years or Clowney for the next five years?
I think its safe to say that Eli is better than Clowney at QB
Jimmy Googs : 4/16/2014 1:54 pm : link
.
Its a tantalizing thought
natefit : 4/16/2014 2:14 pm : link
Ill say that
And go with Josh Freeman and Nassib?
jeff57 : 4/16/2014 2:15 pm : link
That's the question you have to answer.
Im a Clown for Clowney
nybeast : 4/16/2014 2:38 pm : link
but, you don't trade Eli Manning in his prime years. Behind that OL last year and all of the injuries the Giants had, I don't of any quarterback that would not see a down year. Eli is the only reason the Giants/Giants fans always have in the back of their minds the possibility of getting to the dance. Just get this guy into the playoffs and preferably as an underdog and the rest is history. Don't ever forget how he took a 9-7 team to the SB and before that a wild card team to the dance. Remember all of the comebacks and unbelievable throws he made. You don't trade someone of that caliber.

If you want Clowney, trade this year's 1st pick and next years pick if you have to. I think Clowney is worth it from the standpoint, that if Lawrence Taylor was in this draft, you all are telling me you wouldn't find a way to get him knowing what we know about Taylor from the 12th spot??? Clowney has that potential. I have never seen someone of his physical gifts and he can/will certainly get stronger. But that's my opinion on this, but never trade Eli, just get him to the playoffs.
We could've made it much easier and....

Yes

I would trade Eli for the #1 pick this year if asked and no I would not draft Clowney. I would trade the #1 pick for the 3rd or 4th pick and see who is drafted with the goal of getting Robinson or Matthews. If they are both still there at the 3rd or 4th pick I would even trade down to pick #6, #7 or #8 depending on the offers. My goal would be to acquire two additional 1st round picks for the 2015 draft when QB J. Winston will almost assuredly come out.

As for our QB for this year I would think that it would not be very hard to find a QB that can throw 21-25 TD's and less than 25 Int's.
You make the trade yes
Carl in CT : 4/16/2014 3:22 pm : link
For a #1 overall pick if you feel clowney in an all pro and if your willing to trade your 2nd and 3rd to move up in the late first to grab a qb you feel can run your franchise for the next 10. It's a total rebuild with 3 OL picks needed the following year. You then live for 1 year with Freeman as your QB. Tough call.
I like Dragon's
Carl in CT : 4/16/2014 3:25 pm : link
Plan even better.
...
BrettNYG10 : 4/16/2014 3:32 pm : link
I don't think trading for a QB who's over 30 makes much sense for a team with enough holes to get the number one pick.
LOL

"I think if the Giants offered Eli Manning to the Texans for the No. 1 pick in this year's draft, the Texans would say yes before the Giants ended their first sentence."

What kind of idiocy is this?
So the question is
Dr Pepper : 4/16/2014 3:57 pm : link
Clowney at #1 and a rookie QB at 12 worth the last prime and then the end years of Eli.

If Eli holds up like his brother then I say no, if he really is in decline I make the move.
What good is a #1 pick if you trade away your QB?
Jupiter : 4/16/2014 4:19 pm : link
Has there been any QB drafted within the top 20 picks in the past 5 years who had less potential to be a starting QB in the league than this year's top QB prospects?

The draft can't come soon enough.

Please make the insanity stop!

Jimmy Googs : 4/16/2014 4:54 pm : link
You trade Eli and grab Clowney. Freeman or Nassib start the entire season at QB and we clearly bottom out.

Then with a top 3 pick (maybe even #1 overall) in the 2015 draft we pick the best available QB.

and live happily ever after...
Imagine trading his salary away

We can trade Eli for a top pick and then select Bortles. So what we did was go from a Pro Bowl, experienced QB to a rookie, very smart. But we did get a better looking Mrs. QB, so thats a plus.
