Ross Tucker just suggested that Freeman was brought to Giants not for an extra arm or to replace one of the back-ups-but to replace Eli in case he struggles this yr. Is this guy for real??? Josh Freeman? Really??
which makes me think this was said to generate discussion. He throws out some very contrarian thoughts every now and then which I think are geared to do exactly what this is doing. He was academic-all amercian at Princeton so he's not an idiot.
stems from the initial idea phase to writing the ideas.

As long as Eli Manning is healthy enough to play, he is going to be under center. He would have to play epically bad in a situation where it was basically all his fault (i.e., getting good protection and just making awful decisions/throws, etc) and he'd have to do it for a number of games before this was ever any sort of consideration.. and even then, it would probably be the type of thing where he was replaced for the remainder of the game and got the start again the following week.
This is the franchise QB we're talking about with 2 rings.. the guy isn't getting benched.
He might be right, but I don't think so. But I think he's spent more time jabbering about the Freeman signing than the Giants did in signing the guy. Let's go wild: if you had to have one drive for the game, would you rather have Nassib, Freeman, or Painter under center? Since we have ZERO idea about Nassib, and Freeman HAS had some success in this league, give me Freeman after a full spring/summer in camp in the system. I have no problem with the signing, and I think it's a sad joke to suggest that Freeman sees the field if Eli's healthy.
3 weeks still left to the draft and there's nothing left...
..to talk about on Sirius, so Tucker has reverted to his old strategy of throwing shit against the wall and/or and trying to irritate his co-hosts.
Worry about the critiques of the 53 on Labor Day. Tucker has no better idea about what Coughlin, Reese or McAdoo are thinking about the backup QBs than the all-knowing of the Corner Forum.
Eli has been miraculously sturdy considering how many other QB's have routinely been knocked out for many games or the whole season. There is very little confidence that Painter or Nassib would be able to come in and win a game if Eli went down even for a couple of games. Freeman has actually been a legit NFL QB at one time. He is here in case an aging Eli misses time to give us some chance of winning those games.
started a week or so ago;it runs through the sports talk shows; it keeps people waiting for the .." and an unnamed source close to the Giants has validated the rumor..." or 3 or 4 'top Giants officials come out and flatly deny the rumor that..." followup.
It may be true, but my take is:
Get Eli a real OL;
Get Eli some weapons, specifically, WRs that run precise routes(though if JR did his job, we'd likely have 1 more SB['08]and KGs system would match The Greatest Show.. or the recent PATS O);
Recondition Eli's mind to 'throw the ball away, save it for another play' and not put every play on his shoulders that the play called MUST work, without taking the fighting spirit from him(think 'escape Adalius Thomas' and 'Manning to Manningham').
it is possible that if Eli were to get injured and Freeman stepped in and played well in a number of those games, a controversy would insue. You can't live off of 2 rings forever. I'm sure nobody saw Hostetler taking Simms spot when it happened either. Is it probable?
Probably not, but it is a possibility and Freeman is a talented QB.
Um no,if the Giants were so worried about Eli "struggling" and "replacing" him wouldn't they have signed a Freeman or any QB towards the beginning of Free Agency? As they did with every other area of concern they had?
Its obvious, the Giants need another camp arm, one to get them through spring and manage Eli this summer. Since that need arose, why not take a flyer on a player who has talent and they can develop opposed to a street free agent.
The timing of this signing with Eli's surgery should be blatantly obvious but instead you keep trying to drop hints at us like you know something.
I don't expect you to respond as you are probably collecting tidbits to drop on us later or you never respond when you get called out for being factually WRONG
think the giants are concerned about eli u are absolutely clueless and "sticking ur head in the sand". that was my point
they are asking why like everybody else
Ok back to my question, then why did they not address the position pre-surgery in the beginning of the off-season like every other position they were concerned about?
You think its just a coincidence they signed a quarterback AFTER he had surgery? If there is any concern, its over his recovery time and being able to run a functional practice and drills due to lack of numbers at the position, NOT because of his skill level and them questioning if he can bounce back. If you can't see that, you are the one "sticking your head in the sand"
Freeman's ability has never really been a question. The guy can play. It's a matter of how bad he actually wants to and how seriously he's willing to take this opportunity.
That said, Eli is clearly the better QB and there's no "controversy" to be had here. If Eli Manning is healthy, Eli Manning is under center. Period. It's not even a debate. It would take a whole lot more real, real bad play on his behalf for that to ever change.
Maybe, maybe not. The Packers reportedly had interest and were going to pursue him had Flynn signed here or elsewhere. I'd assume at some point someone would have picked him up. The guy has had 2 pretty good years as a starting QB in this league and it's still young. It's really never been about his ability.
Someone probably would have picked him up at some point.
At best, the Giants see a QB they can rehabilitate and develop and possibly take over for Eli when he's done (or trade for a pick in the meantime).
At worst, he's a camp arm that won't make the team.
But he's absolutely not in the plans to take over for Eli if he struggles this year.

because the Giants have already given up on Nassib.

Not all of us have the inside sources you do, Thomas.

very different type of backup from Painter or Nassib.
