Eli to Manningham greatest money throw of all time?

Headhunter : 4/17/2014 8:20 am
I am trying to think of a throw made with so much at stake under the circumstances if the game and the positioning of the defenders. It was perfect. Anyone have a one that compares? The Tyree throw and catch
was more of a prayer that got answered than an executed perfect pass. What you got that compares?
Yes,

For argument's sake: Roethlisberger's throw to Holmes in XLIII.
I recall Aaron Rodgers throwing a pretty sick pass

But I go with Eli to Mario as the best...

Rapelisburger throw to Holmes in the back corner of endzone for the win after they went back and forth in the last few minutes

as much as I hate that guy, it was pretty money to secure their 2nd SB i believe

do like how they ran a similar play to the other sideline which Manningham caught but couldn't stay in bounds earlier in the game. I wonder if that hadn't failed, would the 2nd one have been successful?>
Simms 4-17 was "money"
steve in ky : 4/17/2014 9:03 am : link
As far as amazingly acrobatic and important catches some of those Bradshaw to Swann throws have to be near the top of any list as well. But I agree Eli's has had a couple of great ones as well.

Yes - football science
NYG007 : 4/17/2014 9:17 am : link
also proved it was the hardest throw to complete recorded on video they could analyze. While I don't back anything at all into that show, it did make the statement. I think it was rated 100 out of 100 on difficulty.

Simms 4-17 was amazing, so was Big Ben's winning in-completion ruled a catch to Holmes.

I would personally agree and rank Eli to Mario as simply the best throw I've ever seen. I've had a few debates on here already over it, and on several other forums. I have watched football for almost 40 years, I have never seen a throw that perfect and that difficult before, completed, perfectly placed, etc.
On that football science
pjcas18 : 4/17/2014 9:20 am : link
breakdown they showed that with the combination of the sideline, Patrick Chung bearing down on MM, and the defender on MM's back, Eli had literally the size of a dime for the point of the football to land in and help make that play successful.

It was a near miraculous throw and every time I watch it I'm at least equally impressed with the catch. getting both feet down, and most importantly holding the ball without so much as the hint of a bobble, Manningham cemented his legacy on the post-season highlight films.

Incredible play on both sides.
The Big Ben to Holmes throw is close,
Section331 : 4/17/2014 9:26 am : link
but it had nowhere near the degree of difficulty Eli and MM's throw and catch did. Both had to be absolutely perfect on a very difficult throw. Not to say that the Steeler play wasn't difficult, but it covered about 20-25 yards in the air. Eli to MM was a 40 yard gain, and probably covered 60 yards in the air.

That would get my admittedly biased vote.
Some of the keys that really stick out about the Eli to Manningham
SoDev : 4/17/2014 9:31 am : link
play (same as the Eli to Tyree play) are the game it happened in, the field position at the time of the play, the amount of time on the clock and the score.

You factor in those things and a lot of the other great plays start dropping off the list.

All I know is that we would have been fortunate to have even one of those in recent times. Having 2 is ridiculous.
As great as the pass was
steve in ky : 4/17/2014 9:32 am : link
It is hard to call it the greatest "money" throw when it was a 1st down play. In my opinion there needs to be more of an element of desperation (miss and go home) for it to be the top money throw of all time.
Yes.

Great point. to add to this, would the game be different had he dragged his foot? People always talk about welker's drop but that brady throw sucked and was behind welker. Manningham had a routine sideline catch. I wonder if he stayed him how much different the game would be.

the Giants were deep in their own end, the coverage was excellent and the window to put the ball was small and he had to hit Manningham in stride without leading him out of bounds. The best money throw ever

McL : 4/17/2014 10:48 am : link
Is the fact that there was actually pressure on the play, and Elie did a great slide in the pocket to get free space to make the throw.
Oh... And I agree with the OP
McL : 4/17/2014 10:59 am : link
I have made the same argument in the past myself.

TO put it in perspective.

The ball travels 44 yards in the air.
That is 1.5 times the length of a basketball court.

And Eli threw a swish... Nothing but net.

NOT EVEN REMOTELY CLOSE TO ELI TO MANNINGHAM.

The Immaculate Reception probably doesn't qualify...
Big Blue Blogger : 4/17/2014 11:24 am : link
...because the pass was actually headed right to Tatum, who played the man instead of the ball, which led to the deflection to Harris. Still, it was fourth and ten, and Bradshaw was running for his life, so the element of desperation was certainly there. As a throw, it had more in common with Helmet Catch than Manning-to-Manningham.
Ha I thought of the Immaculate Reception as an all time amazing play,
BlueLou : 4/17/2014 11:36 am : link
like Eli to Tyree, certainly not an all time great throw. Ben to Holmes compares, much as I can't say I like the personalities as much as Eli and Mario.

That long ball Eli chucked to Cruz to beat the Redskins in 2012 was a beauty, too. Right on the money vs double coverage. Eli is freaky-good, when he's good.
First one I found of this throw... - ( New Window )

Yeah. I know why people focused on the catch instead of the throw.

It was a nice catch.. very nice, even. It seemed especially nice because Manningham's Achilles heel throughout his career had been getting both feet down. It's tough to get your feet down in that spot and he did it... in the most important moment of the season. Props to him.

But that throw...
aesthetics x importance = absolutely

Semipro Lineman : 4/17/2014 11:55 am : link
Eli to Manningham was a greater throw while the other candidates were greater or more difficult catches. Hind Ward catch and toe dance was as difficult a play as Eli to Tyree's Helmet in my opinion
Catch This
Simms : 4/17/2014 12:43 pm : link
I think the Holmes catch was better than Mario's IMO.
In terms of "a catch". Eli's toss was great though and a highlight for our team no doubt. In some ways they are close, depending upon your thoughts on down and situation of the game if that is your chosen benchmark. Then I could see how Mario's grab and leap next to, or over Holmes play.

The others noted with Owens, McNabb's, and Cruz's romp against the Redskins were good, but both a result of weak or bad coverage.

The Hail Mary with the boys was IMO PI on the offense not called.

I hear the hoopla over Clark's catch, but both he and Montana have stated is a catch they had done over and over in practice. An ally oops that worked at the right time and place while running across the back of the end-zone. Heard him say it three times and I still keep saying really ..

Over the years I have seen a amazing plays by Rice, Owens, Plax, Jennings and several others who have had a nack of making the hard play seem simple. But were not end of game winners. Cannot recall's the WR, but during Farve's first season with the Viks he had a heck of a game winner in the end-zone against the Niners too.
Moss
Simms : 4/17/2014 12:44 pm : link
Randy Moss's rookie season if filled with some too.
I vote Montana to Clark
speedywheels : 4/17/2014 1:04 pm : link
taking into account the down/time left on the clock.

Eli's throw was incredible (and MM's catch wasn't too shabby either), but if that play failed they still had plenty of time to get down the field. But it was 4th down for Montana.
Actually, I will correct myself
speedywheels : 4/17/2014 1:06 pm : link
I just looked it up after my post, and see that it was 3rd down and not 4th for Montana - still had time for one more play.

Soooo, nevermind - I'll say yes to the OP's question...

Toomer's catch against the Bengals in 2008 was pretty damn awesome.
I agree with Headhunter
Frank from CA : 4/17/2014 3:35 pm : link
Eli threw is precisely where it had the only chance to be caught and Manningham used every ounce of ability to jump to that point, secure the catch, control his body and defy any movements that would be questionable under the replay booth hood. In slow motion that play is even more awesome. Rothlisberger's SB TD is on Par as it shared the tight window, smothering coverage and dependence on a world class athletic reception. Eli's throw was more challenging as it was a slightly more difficult angle.
BTW, I don't see how (or why) anyone here needs to play down
BlueLou : 4/17/2014 3:53 pm : link
the catch. That was magnificent too. The CB again hits MM on the shoulder a split second before the ball arrives, and Chung has come over really quickly from his deep cover 2 safety position, and MM actually has to reach a bit out of bounds with his hands and arms and pull the ball back into the field of play, while of course making sure his feet land/drag in bounds.

It's a great play on both accounts. Boothe holding out Wilfork mano a mano was huge too, as Millen noted on "Anatomy of a Play."
Yeah I can look at that for the 50th time... - ( New Window )
Pearson pushed off
Phil in LA : 4/17/2014 4:17 pm : link
Holmes did not get both feet in.

Manning to Manningham was the sickest extremely clutch throw in NFL history.
Another
NJGiantFan84 : 4/17/2014 4:19 pm : link
aspect that gets overlooked is that Manningham was drilled and held on to the ball. I know "it's his job to hold on to the ball" but we see hard hits dislodge the ball in those situations frequently enough. He did a good job making the grab, getting his feet down AND securing the ball before he got drilled.
