NFT: Need vacation ideas within driving distance of NY

Csonka : 4/17/2014 5:30 pm
Father and sons (teenagers) bonding time for a week in July. Was thinking whitewater rafting and paintball, but probably not much whitewater in July. The boys are not into baseball so cruising around to stadiums isn't worth it. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Power boat rentals, parasailing, water skiing, hot air balloon rides, horseback riding, hiking, camping, fishing, golfing, etc. Nice little downtown area right on the lake with many good restaurants. Check it out.

A week?

that's a long time if your only activities are paint ball and white water rafting.

I'd do something like Boston -- Providence -- Newport and maybe one of the CT casinos (though maybe not since there isn't a ton for teenagers to do).

You can definitely find things in that area to do daily, F1 racing in Boston is a lot of fun - we did it with work and if I were a teenager again I'd want to go everyday.

There is paintball all over the place there.

Beaches
great restaurants
go out on a charter boat deep sea fishing
whale watch
sight seeing (freedom trail in Boston, cliff walk in Newport, etc)

zip lining, etc.

Hershey Park for a day, Gettysburg and the Antietam Battlefields can each be seen in a day. From there run out to West Virginia for Whitewater rafting. Spend two days at Shenandoah National Park camping and hiking. The hike to the top of "Old Rag" is one of the better on the east coast.

has excellent WW rafting (Really!). They even control the difficulty at different times by releases from a reservoir. Google it. The surrounding lake areas are also ideal vacation spots for kids. (E.g. Speculator or Lake Placid).

P.S. I assume you mean driving distance of NYC. Typical downstate perspective. I bet you think Yonkers is "Upstate" and Buffalo is in Canada :)

And July is a great time to be there...here is a link for things to do. Besides the track (and if you go when the track is open, I'll bet the kids would love that too!), there are tons of things to do, including historical trips (Saratoga Battlefield Park) , music, horse rides, art museums, etc.

Oh, and if you do go to the track, do NOT miss breakfast at Saratoga Racetrack. Just amazing...the horses come right up to the rail, you get a great breakfast, and the tour is amazing (kids get to pet the training horses, you pass by and talk to jockeys and horse owners, and you get to see the training track, stalls, etc).

that treetop obstacle course is awesome (as long as you don't have a fear of heights). I highly recommend it.
