NFT: Scientists Find An "Earth Twin"

gidiefor : Mod : 4/17/2014 5:47 pm

Say hello to Kepler-186f - a planet so far deemed most likely to have the environment to support life.

Story linked below

They're actually saying it's more a "cousin" than a "twin".

Because our suns are much different.

on a planet orbiting a red dwarf star isn't impossible, but it's not as likely as life on a planet orbiting a main sequence star like our sun. Red dwarfs give off much less light, and mostly in the infrared, not ultraviolet part of the spectrum. The habitable zone is therefore much closer. Get too close and the planet might become tidally locked, so that only one side faces the sun. That makes life there even harder. Again, not impossible, but not ideal.

From what I know, hundreds of planets have now been identified, and not one is like earth in size and density and in orbit in the habitable zone around a main sequence star like our sun.

Just kidding, I actually enjoyed that info.

There are also brown dwarfs and white dwarfs.
Let's invade them

Only a half hour drive if we had developed warp drive yet.

Just like I like saying Dan Snyder.
Well if we build a spaceship that can go a million miles an hour
Marty in Albany : 4/17/2014 9:02 pm : link
we could get there in about 281,000 years. Taking into account Einstein's special theory of relativity, it would only seem like maybe 100,000 years to the space travelers.
red dwarf?

I wouldn't be surprised if people start bitching and moaning to change the name because it's offensive to dwarfs

the x-ray vision doesn't make sense. How can he change how he sees. If he can see through things he would all the time. Then he would bump into random things not seeing that they were there. Combine that with his super strength and he'd level a city just going out for a stroll.

I believe just because a star is a red dwarf, doesn't mean it isn't on the main sequence. In fact, I believe red dwarfs stay on the main sequence much longer than the Sun.

Correct. That's what I meant, but didn't state it well. They're a different kind of main sequence star than our sun. In fact as you note, they'll be on the main sequence a lot longer than our sun because of how long it takes them to burn through their fuel.
mmmm , twins
