NFT: Visiting NYC

Superman10 : 4/17/2014 9:16 pm
Planning on going to NYC for the auto show next week. Only my second time going there. I should have an entire afternoon and night to what I want, then go to the auto show the next day. Looking for suggestions on how to use that time wisely.

I kind of want to hang out on the empire state observation deck at night for a few hours. I think I'd enjoy the high up view at night. Anyone been? Good / bad idea?

Museums? Things to check out in times square?

I fear I'm going to get lost on the subway. Advice on how not to?
Enjoy the observation deck

I hear Meg Ryan's still there. If you can get her to sign something "my darling Bill", please forward it
I don't think the observation deck is worth more than an hour, and

That's being generous, IMO.

Regarding subways, print out a map beforehand (they're also posted within the stations) or have it accessible on your phone. My one 'warning' is that you may accidentally grab an express train that skips your stop, so you overshoot it. Sometimes it results in being only a few blocks away, others a mile or so, which is a pain in the ass if you're on a tight schedule.
I go every few years to the empire

state building. It's great. Not sure it's a couple hours unless you are content spending a ton of time just looking out at the city. I'm usually checking my watch after about 15 - 20 minutes tops.

If you're sure you're going to go, then go online and get your reservations in advance, it will save you from waiting in line to buy tickets.

times square is times square, it's always interesting just people watching. not sure if you have kids, but mine love going to M&M store, Hershey world, Toys 'R Us.

the museums are excellent.

stick to one or two subways

commuters who travel on the trains daily, take a cab or at least a bus. You're a tourist not a working stiff. Spend a few extra buck and enjoy yourself a little.

If he's traveling on the weekend, the trains shouldn't be too bad.

museum of modern art, metropolitan museum, or natural history museum is a great way to spend an afternoon. Or buy a discounted ticket at the times square booth and see a show.
My favorite thing to do in NYC

is simply walking... I always walk to wherever I'm going ... sightseeing is important i guess, but simply walking the City is what I enjoy most...

Superman10 I'd think transportation would be the least of your concerns.

If you're visiting solo, don't forget, there are still quite a few illicit ways to enjoy yourself. Have fun and if you get up that way, stop by FAO Schwarz and the Central Park Zoo.
go to a Knicks playoff game

Take the SI Fery back and forth, walk around Battery park City along the water, perhaps the south street sea port and then go to the WTC Memorial.
or, as an alternative to the south ferry

weather permitting, the nifty, much smaller water taxis, sit on the roof chairs, bring food, its like your own harbor view cruise.

hudson river walks are good.

also; Mott Street in Manhattans China Town, start at Mott and canal and go south to the end.

or: on a clear night, hire a cab to take you over some of the lower bridges and back, (brooklyn, manhattan)..

second the museum of natural history

grand central has a very nice food court below the big room
You will not get lost on the subways

If your staying around midtown tale #1 train or on the eastside take the #6 train. Try not to take cabs for they are very expensive.
If you like to walk and weather is nice go down to west village area or around Washington square park. Lots of good places to eat and interesting little shops. Walking down Broadway is very interesting as well.
Go get a bacon cheese burger at JG Melons

Empire State Building. Had my first kiss with my future hubby there. I'd also see Rockefeller Center and then walk up 5th Avenue to the park, then over to Columbus Circle. Museums are great, but they would each require at least 2 hours. Not sure you will have time.

Don't stop to look at a map on your phone in the middle of the sidewalk.

Don't block the subway stairs.

Get out of the way.

Have fun.
I like walking too.

I think my longest hike was from 94th & Broadway to Prince Street with a bunch of stops in between.
Definitely
