NFT: Holy $@#*% ... crate training

Wow. So my fiancé and I brought home our new pup today. He's been a great little guy. We are crate training him, so we spent some time in and around his crate today trying to get him acclimated to it before locking him in over night.

Holy shit. We did our research about this, so we knew what to expect, but I guess its one of those things you don't REALLY know until you're doing it. It sounds like the exorcist in the other room!

He eventually settled after about 30-40 minutes, but I got up to let him out and go to the bathroom and now he's back to howling. The little guy crying breaks my heart, but it is what it is for a while.

BBI dog owners, how many sleepless nights await?
Put a an old t-shirt or cloth with your smell on it in there with him

Sometimes that will help him not feel as alone.
Also sometime a stuffed toy can help

although he may just chew it up.
Also

even though it is hard to sometime resist comforting him don't keep going to him when he cries it will just train him to think if he cries you will come.

We did put some one of our old blankets in there to give him a scent.

As I type this it sounds like he's settling down, so I'm going to try and get a few more hours sleep!,
LOL

Good luck!
I would try playing with him before putting him in the crate.

A good round of rough play can tire him out so he is more inclined to sleep. Also I would have a good talk with him each night just before putting him to bed and explain what is expected of him. That will comfort him and he will understand more than you might think. Talk to him again in the morning and if he was good be sure to compliment him on that. If you feel funny doing this at first, be patient and in no time you will be a dog whisperer. Thats my opinion of course, I hope it helps.
a blanket over the crate to make it dark

can also work. Shouldn't be long though.

You will be surprised. A lot of dogs view the crate as their den afterwards and just go in whenever they want a break from activity.
you'll be happy you did this

eventually the crate will be his safety and comfort place
We would give our dog a biscuit

As he walked into the crate. That helped getting him to go into it. May help to bring the crate into your room at night.
Well, we made it through the night lol

All things considered he did alright. He howled for about an hour when we put him in, then settled until about 2:30/3am. I took him out to pee, then put him back in. About another 40 minutes of solid howling before he went down until around 6:30.

Now he's playing in the kitchen (we baby gated it) while I drink coffee and try and stay awake. lol.

Thanks for the advice guys. I am thinking of putting him in the crate for an hour or so this afternoon to try and get him more acclimated.

it may get better quickly. We picked up a puppy last friday and friday night was how you described.

Saturday night I put her in the crate at 11:45 and she slept from 12 to 6. We had her outside all day, literally, at my kids soccer games, longs walks, running around, and she was exhausted. whoever said it above, a tired puppy is a good puppy.

Same thing Sunday, and almost unheard of, she slept from like 9:30 to 6.

sadly one of my kids had a terrible allergic reaction and we had to bring her back. I felt terrible and my kids are heartbroken.

Anyway, others have given you good advice, since I was new to puppies and we darkened the crate with a sheet over it, put safe toys in it, gave her treats as she entered the crate, talked in calm nice voice while she was in there.

Yeah...

its hard but they are like kids. If you run to them everytime they cry then all they'll do is cry. I remember my dog when he was a pup he did the same thing but they get used to it. Some of the tips are good. Try playing with him a lot before you put him in for the night. That will tire him out. Just make sure to give him a lot of outside time so that it doesn't feel like a punishment cuz its not a punishment. You're just trying to train him to hold it in LOL
The one thing I always did was to make sure I NEVER put the pup

in the crate for doing something wrong. You don't want them to think it's a place where they go when they're in trouble. You want to have them realize that this is their space and it's a nice escape to go in.

Always keep the door open, let the pup go in and out as he pleases during the day when you're home.

In my experience, we were VERY lucky. The first night I said to my wife, get ready for a rough night. We both woke up to the sound of our alarm clock and the pup kept sleeping. Eventually we got rid of the gate and just kept him confined to the kitchen for a while. Now he's free to roam the house. He'll be 3 in June.

keep at it. after night two, my guy slept through the night, every night (going on 5 years now). although the little bastard spends most nights between our feet on the bed nowadays.

Our puppy loves her crate. She feels save in there. We only put her in there when we go upstairs to bed. During the day we have a fenced in area around the crate where she stays. We were lucky that she doesn't mess there.
blanket over the top

Thanks guys

I am definitely going to put a blanket over the crate. We did that with my dog growing up, but I totally forgot about it.

He has been remarkably good at not messing in the house. Knock on wood. We had one accident indoors yesterday, but immediately picked him up and brought him outside to his spot. He's been going over to the back door now to let us know. Crazy how they can pick some things up really quick.

He's 10 weeks, btw.
I just got a puppy and she was like that too
KentGraham : 9:11 am : link
The blanket over the crate works, but what also worked for me was just putting the crate in my room. She doesn't make a peep while in the crate if she can see me.
Oh. So you're going to bed
Motley Blue : 9:15 am : link
and that means I can't use the house now. You're tired and want to go to sleep, so I have to go sit in a box. Forgive me if I have trouble finding the logic in that. I could have done this shit back at the shelter.

-Little Puppy

Not sure if the experts would agree with how I did it, but...
Logee1 : 9:27 am : link
When we got our puppy, I slept on a mattress in front of her crate for the first 4-5 nights. This way, she could see me, so she wasn't scared. Also, when she cried a bit because she had to go out, I would hear it and wake up and take her out. Within 2 days she had no problem being in there alone and within 10 days she could go all night without having to get up and go out to pee. She was completed house broken in 2.5 weeks.

Also, the blanket thing over the crate is a must. It automatically makes the dog feel safer. They are afterall, den animals.

I actually slept next to the crate for a little bit last night until he looked like he fell asleep. Honestly, it was more because those wails were so horrifying I wanted to make sure something wasn't really wrong. Maybe 15-20 minutes.

He was still howling, but it settled him a bit early on until he realize I was gone.
I did the same thing
pjcas18 : 10:10 am : link
the first night, slept outside the crate.

So many people told me moving the crate into their bedroom was something they regret, I never considered doing that, since my wife wasn't a huge fan of the canine scent to begin with, but you should be careful if you consider that.
just to add
Bleedin Blue : 12:38 pm : link
it was posted that you should tucker the puppy out so he will sleep. You also want to make sure he's not getting food or water too close to bed time, puppys can't hold their business too long. You also want to walk him after exercise because he'll have to go soon after. So no water or food close to bed time and walk him before you put him in for the night. Crate training is one of the best things you can do for your dog, he will have a place that is all to himself. Good Luck with your new Pup!! Post a pic if you can.
Put crate in same room you sleep in

We had our puppy downstairs and she howled away. Finally moved the crate inot our room for a night and she slept there happily ever after.
