Samuel NYDN: WALTER THURMOND ON DRC

"Don't assume that Prince Amukamara and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie are the Giants' top two corners just yet, because Walter Thurmond, the other key free agent signing in the secondary, hasn't had his say just yet.

Thurmond, speaking in SiriusXM Radio on Wednesday, said he was signed to "play the nickel position," bt he added that his mentality is to "really just compete on the outside." DRC was the Giants' big signing, but Thurmond would like a shot to start.

"They brought me in to come in, play the nickel position and really just compete for some playing time on the outside," he said, "and that's my mentality. Really, going to make the decision tough for them to see who's out there. Whether it be myself, DRC, or Prince. That's all I know is to be a competitor.

"I'm just a competitor by nature,"" he added. "I'm going to continue to carry that mentality and it's not going to change as we go into camp."

Still, Thurmond is likely to wind up as the Giants' slot corner, the role in which he thrived as a member of the Legion of Boom Seattle Seahawks secondary last season. He's comfortable in that role, too, and he added that it's an important role.

"On the outside, you really have a second defender with the sideline," he said. "(The nickel) it poses a lot of challenges. You really have a lot on your plate .But for me, I love the challenge. I love being in that situation, and going against some of the quicker, faster guys as well."

Brooks NFL.com: Aaron Donald's NFL fits include New York Giants, Chicago Bears
"New York Giants (No. 12)
The Giants' defensive line has lost some of the spunk that made the unit one of the best in the business for years. While the notable departure of Justin Tuck has led many to focus on the edges, it is the loss of Linval Joseph that could prompt GM Jerry Reese to expend a top pick on an interior D-lineman. The Giants desperately need a disruptive playmaker in the middle; Donald certainly qualifies with his explosive quickness and athleticism. (The guy blazed a 4.68 40-yard dash at 285 pounds during the NFL Scouting Combine.) Donald would give the G-Men a young, interior rusher to feature on exotic stunts and games in nickel downs. Reese clearly understands the importance of getting after the passer in the NFL, so Donald could be squarely in the Giants' crosshairs next month."

Graziano ESPN: Big Blue Morning: Amukamara's option

"Tough call. That number is slightly higher than the average annual salary on the contract of fellow Giants cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, whom Tom Coughlin described last month in no uncertain terms as the team's new No. 1 cornerback. Amukamara is a good player, but if he were on the market this offseason it's hard to imagine he'd have been paid according to that option number. So the Giants have to make a decision about a player they like at a price that's likely too high for him.

What helps them is the nature of the option-year guarantee at this point. It's guaranteed only against injury. So if they pick up the option and Amukamara has a healthy but otherwise not-so-great season, they could still cut him prior to 2015 and not be on the hook for the money. They also could continue to talk to him about a long-term deal in the meantime, especially if they get into the 2014 season and like what they see.

The Giants like Amukamara. He plays hard, is a sound technician, keeps himself in shape and pays attention to detail. But they also brought in a bunch of new cornerbacks this year. Walter Thurmond, for instance, is in on a one-year deal, but it's not out of the question that they could get to the end of 2014 believing Thurmond is a better choice than Amukamara is going forward."
