Round 2 - 1986 - was this our best (non 1st round) ever ?

spider : 4/18/2014 9:00 am
1 19 Eric Dorsey DE 08/05/1964 Notre Dame
2 44 Mark Collins DB 01/16/1964 Cal State-Fullerton
2 46 Erik Howard DT 11/12/1964 Washington State
2 51 Pepper Johnson LB 07/29/1964 Ohio State
2 53 Greg Lasker DB 09/28/1964 Arkansas
3 73 John Washington DE 02/20/1963 Oklahoma State
And, you expected them to stay 5-10 years

if they were good enough. Talk about building a solid foundation without FA
Wow
Motley Blue : 4/18/2014 9:08 am : link
I guess it was. How did the Giants end up with all those picks?
got the picks
Chaka : 4/18/2014 9:12 am : link
for trading gary zimmerman and druggie mike haynes if i recall correctly
Giants got the picks
Steve in South Jersey : 4/18/2014 9:12 am : link
by trading Mark Haynes to Denver, and Zimmerman to Minnesota if I recall.
Nice haul for certain
Jimmy Googs : 4/18/2014 9:20 am : link
but someone clearly missed the boat with Greg Lasker...a second round pick?

Jimmy Googs ...

Are you from Greenpoint ? I knew a Joey Googs a long time ago.
Trades
Defenderdawg : 4/18/2014 9:25 am : link
Traded Mark Haynes to Broncos for 1986 second round pick (#51-Thomas "Pepper" Johnson), 1986 sixth round pick (#139-Ron Brown), 1987 second round pick (#55-Adrian White) on 1986-04-29

Traded rights to Gary Zimmerman to Vikings for two 1986 second round picks (#44-Mark Collins) (#53-Greg Lasker) on 1986-04-29
Looking at those picks
lugnut : 4/18/2014 9:29 am : link
One would surmise our defense in 1985 must have absolutely sucked.
2005 was pretty remarkable, with only four picks.
Big Blue Blogger : 4/18/2014 9:30 am : link
Webster, Tuck and Jacobs were all mainstays on two championship teams. Even Moore hung around the league for a few years.

2007 was a closer parallel to 1986: A decent #1 pick, followed by a bunch of guys who played significant roles on title-winning squads. In a way, the 2007 class was more efficient: the last eight picks in 1986 did nothing. The 2007ers all contributed, although Koets got off to a slow start and then tore up his knee just when he began to show promise.

No I am not Spider. Sorry.
The 1985 Defense was good, this draft class made our D very good

Too bad the Giants took Zimmerman instead of Reggie White. I would have loved to have seen him play with us at that time.

1989 draft. Can't recall if they all played that long in the NFL but were strong contributors to a SB team and a few playoff teams.
One of the secrest behind our Great 1986 team...
M.S. : 4/18/2014 11:34 am : link
...was the collapse of the old World Football League (or whatever it was called) after 1984.

We got Bart Oats from that league... and the rights to Zimmerman, who wanted nothing to do with the Giants, so we sent him to Minny for a couple of 2's!

1993...
Amtoft : 4/18/2014 11:54 am : link
2nd round Michael Strahan HOF
8th round Jesse Armstead

I would take this draft... Man if we had these 2 right now.
Shows how a great draft can really make a big difference
Giants-Bama in CO : 4/18/2014 1:54 pm : link
1986, 1989, 2005 and 2007
If
AcidTest : 4/18/2014 3:06 pm : link
that happened today, Eric would have a heart attack. No way BBI could keep up.

Also Sean Landetta and Maurice Carthon.
That 2nd round was great, BUT we could have selected

Reggie White instead of Zimmerman in that USFL draft. Just think of a defense with LT and White on it. Youza!
yatqb is right
SGMen : 4/18/2014 8:38 pm : link
Reggie White and Lawrence Taylor could have lined up next to each other for 10 years. Dominance would have been unparalleled.

...ahh, I forgot about Carthon and Landetta.

Good catch!

Along with Banks and Marshall! we would only have to score 7 on offense to win 12 games.
Loved the Rd 2 1986 picks
PatersonPlank : 4/19/2014 10:53 am : link
I also like the 1983 top 4, getting players like Nelson, Williams, and Marshall. That was great too. You can see why those teams were so good, and remained good until the early 1990's.
