NFT: Knicks chat: Pau gasol would listen to Phil "pitch"

nygiants16 : 4/18/2014 9:34 am
Pau in is exit interview was asked about the Knicks and said he would listen to Phil and see what he has to say...says he has a lot of respect for Phil and would be interested...

yahoo says Knicks are interested in Gasol but that could be speculation on their part...
Kind of aged. What could he offer as a player at this point?

He did average 17 and 10 this year...he still has some left in the tank and he knows the triangle...would be another veteran to help teach the triangle...for 3.2 million wouldnt be a bad deal at all..

I didn't follow the lakers at all. 17 and 10 sounds fine to me. If we could've gotten that from Amare or Bargnani the team would been well-off.
He's not in
Metnut : 4/18/2014 10:07 am : link
his prime anymore, but he's still one of the best scoring big men in the league and has already thrived in Phil's system. He'd give the Knicks a front court with some nice upside.

Would the Knicks be able to offer him the MLE?
I wouldn't be surprised if Pau

Ive been saying this since Phil was hired...dont be surprised if Fisher is signed as a stop game point guard and then brought in as GM after next year...

Also there was a report in the NYPOSt saying Kerr "absolutely" expects an offer from Knicks and he would take it...
Old ass Derek Fisher could probably beat out Felton for starting PG.

Why not?
I can't think of an example
steve in ky : 4/18/2014 10:26 am : link
Where a player with no history with a team retired and was immediately promoted to the GM position of that team, so if I am correct it has never happened and therefore probably unlikely.

Even when previous players have been promoted to GM's the players always had a history with the team and usually first hold another position with the team prior to being promoted to GM.

It just seems like something farfetched IMO.

But he does have a history with the guy running the team and has very good relationships with players around the league....

I think the relationship he has with Phil Jackson is more important than his relationship with the Knicks...

JAckson is going to bring in guys he knows and trusts not guys who have been apart of the Knicks in the past...

steve in ky : 4/18/2014 10:41 am : link
Now you are just playing with semantics. If you say "don't be surprised if it happens" that is basically saying that you think there is a good likelihood it could happen, which again is fine just struck me as something way out in left field.

According to NY post

Steve kerr Expects an offer from Knicks and will accept if its offered..
Gasol
kmed : 4/18/2014 12:29 pm : link
on a 1 year deal I'd assume. If they think of signing him to any long term deal, we are screwed.
..
nygiants16 : 4/18/2014 12:30 pm : link
The Post has learned Kerr has had conversations with his bosses at Turner Sports about adjusting his schedule as an analyst during the upcoming playoffs should he be named the Knicks' head coach.
By the way, Gasol makes sense for so many reasons,
kmed : 4/18/2014 12:34 pm : link
none more than the fact that we can stockpile all of the PF's who can score a bit, but are allergic to tough defense.

Seriously though, he's done being an impact player in the NBA. He's still a decent player, but far from the guy he was in his prime. If he's signed to anything past next year, it's a really bad sign.

just guessing but probably would be 2 year deal starting at mini mid level..

Phil for this year is going to try and bring in as many veterans that he knows around the league to try and do something next year then fully change the roster with another max guy the year after in my opinion..

Then he wont be traded at draft time...if they are waiting until Pau signs chandler would be traded AFTER the draft...

but all kidding aside i agree i think they try to trade Chandler for a draft pick in this up coming draft...perhabs to Phoenix who has 7 picks...

Yes, signing a veteran who just averaged 17 and 10 and is a smart player who knows the system for cheap is a really bad sign!

Jerry in DC : 4/18/2014 1:05 pm : link
Gasol still brings a decent amount to the table. The passing ability isn't going away and he can score in a variety of ways. It's a good 2nd offensive option after Carmelo and a Chandler-Gasol-Melo front line would be great on the glass.

I think he'll get more than one year though, which would interfere with the Knicks long-term strategy.
can someone explain...
Italianju : 4/18/2014 1:14 pm : link
to me why a 33 year old who avg almost a double double with a PER just under 20 is going to sign for a 2 year 7 mill deal? At the very least someone would be willing to offer him the full MLE for a year or two.

I think what the speculation is is that Phil can convince Pau to come to New York on a discount because of their familiarity...who knows if he would actually do it...its based on what he says and the sources saying the Knicks are interested...who knows at this point if he would actually do it..
he is way past his prime
oipolloi : 4/18/2014 1:34 pm : link
17/10 on an atrocious team is meaningless

Age and injuries have robbed him of his lateral movement, making him a huge defensive liability.

The only real advantage is that he can play the triangle. A one-year deal would be fine but no more than that.

First of all, he played 60 games. The year before he played 49. The year before that, 65. He's 34 years old with bad knees. He's not going to get better. Great he averaged 17/10, but he's going to miss a lot of time and he is soft on defense. Signing him to any deal that ruins our cap space in 2 years is stupid and short sighted. Bad move.

Exactly, it's comical to think he's going to sign for 3.5 million. He's going to get a decent deal, somewhere. It should not be with the Knicks.

Claims Woodson could be fired as early as today BUT woodson doesnt want to talk to the Knicks he wants the Knicks to talk to his reps instead...

He also claims Melo could go to Cleveland and that Melo has an interest in playing there...

CAA putting out more garbage...
Melo leaving wouldn't be the end of the world,
kmed : 4/18/2014 2:28 pm : link
we would still be in a good position to build a lasting program. Melo is the quickest route to a contender, but there's a decent amount of risk in that too.
Well as much as Gasol has been hurt...
Italianju : 4/18/2014 2:29 pm : link
he has still played in over 60 games 4 of the past 5 years with really only 2012 being a bad year with him playing only 49 games. Amare has played in 65, 29, and 47 in the past three years and has to be one of the biggest injury risks in the whole league. For that reason i think amare is locked into only getting a 1 year deal, but even then i could see some team giving him a 1 year 5 mill deal.

There is going to be risk either way....really we just have to sit back and see what Phil does...

I will say this if Melo does leave i am its Phil leading the rebuild and not Dolan...
Honestly,
kmed : 4/18/2014 2:31 pm : link
if I have money, I wouldn't touch Amare or Gasol unless it was a 1 year deal or a very, very low salary. These big guys with serious knee injuries are only going to get worse. Neither plays a lick of defense at this point and what good are they in street clothes for 25-40% of the games?
So woodson must really want to keep his job....
Italianju : 4/18/2014 2:32 pm : link
if he isnt going to talk to the knicks. IF thats true and its a big IF coming from Screamin A, then i think that would mean that woodson has already been told he is a goner.

I dont see melo going to CLE at all. They are a bad team with one good player who has regressed a bit and cant stay on the court, oh and of course its freaking CLE.
i agree Keith...
Italianju : 4/18/2014 2:34 pm : link
but year in and year out its proven that you and me are more educated then the guys handing out the contracts. Some idiot team will offer them a multi year deal or something like that. What a guy is worth and what he gets paid are completely different things. Id sign either one to a 1 year deal for the mini MLE, but in this NBA they could prolly both get more (maybe not Amare)

Agreed on all accounts. There is certainly risks to Melo leaving, but as far as long term sustained success, him leaving would actually help. We'd need to hit on draft picks, we'd need to develop a system and players and we'd eventually need to bring in FA's and convince them to player here without Melo.

Like you though, I'm glad it's Phil with the plan and not Jimmy D. However, if he signs Gasol to any deal more than 1 year for decent money, that's a bad sign, IMO.

Remember with Stephen A take everything with a grain of salt...he is a CAA mouth piece...so anything he says is prpaganda from CAA...

Hahn mentioned this the other day everythign you hear regarding Melo take with a grain of salt because CAA wants him out of New York since Phil is in New York and they dont control the Knicks anymore...so you are going to hear plenty of stories saying he wants this place or that place and he wants to leave New York...unless you hear it from melo do not believe it..
Agreed again.
kmed : 4/18/2014 2:37 pm : link
There are going to be lots of BS rumors. I believe Melo when he says he needs to think this through and do his due dilegence. His mind is most certainly not made up and I'd guess that he has no clue where he will end up, although he probably has a few teams in mind that could make sense. He still has to talk to teams and see whats out there before he can decide. Let it be known that I am going to complain about all the rumors when they come out.
