NFT: Friend looking at some used Subarus, needs advice

Overseer : 4/18/2014 3:20 pm
My friend just moved out to Oregon and wants a used Subaru. Can anyone recommend a good model?

She said she needs a hatchback or something with a really big back seat. Also, I think she wants to do the upholstery herself because she said something about "scissoring", so ideally cloth over leather. But she's not a neat freak at all, so it's fine if it has really dirty carpets.

Thanks for any help!
She probably wants to do some hot lesbian stuff...

Every other car up here in the hilly snow towns of NH is one. I live at 1600 feet above sea level in the snow belt and run it with all-weather tires without any problems all winter. Things run forever. Can't say anything bad about them.

I like mine better than my wife's Volvo XC90.
That's it, Jon

I'm a lesbian all the way - Subaru Forester for me.

Great car. In the Hudson Valley there are a ton of them. Got through this horrendous winter with just the regular tires - it has great all wheel drive, and is very economical. The Outbacks are great too, I just prefer the slightly roomier transport space inside the Forester as I often am getting an upright bass and an amp etc. from place to place.

is such a perfect name for a Subaru
Just make sure she checks the trunk first
jcn56 : 4/18/2014 3:33 pm : link
The last thing you want is funny smells coming out of the trunk. Same with the front - get under the hood, if you smell anything remotely fish-like, that's a sign you've got a nasty discharge.

Have your buddy check out places like

http://www.carcomplaints.com/subaru

http://www.carsurvey.org/reviews/subaru/

Those sites helped me a lot when I was buying a used car. There are also sites like Edmunds used car site that will give you reviews for certain model years and what the typical cost of repairs will be for things like brakes, transmission, etc.
also make sure you get one that hasn't been to the beach

nothing will irritate your friend more than getting one with sand everywhere
please be nice, we need our diversity here

lesbians are welcome.

Its a stereotype, but hell, I am a straight man, but I luvs me some LL Bean boots, fishing, women of all types, including women with short hair and nice shoulders, and [redacted list of activities].

I might be a lesbian.

DO NOT TRUST CAR FAX
I Love Clams Casino : 4/18/2014 3:56 pm : link
and that stupid little fox....

Car Fax does not show auction sales....and guess where most used cars come from? If the original owner had an insurance claim on the vehicle and a wholesaler bought the vehicle as salvage and sold it to the dealership, Car Fax will show 1 owner...

There is a reason used car dealers use Car Fax.

Pay a little money and check it out on www.autocheck.com

Yeah

Subarus

We have a Forester. It's a really good car, and everything they say about how they handle in snow is true. Before your friend buys one, though, take it to mechanic and make sure the cylinder heads are checked over (compression tested and looked over for oil and/or antifreeze leakage). The Achille's heel of the Subarus is that because they use boxer style engines (two cylinder heads: one on the driver side at 90 degrees and the other on the passenger side at 270 degrees, like a BMW motorcycle, old VW Bug, or Porsche), they are very prone to head gasket failure due to erosion caused by antifreeze. (I paid for college by working as an auto mechanic once upon a time.) If you look on craigslist for Subarus you will often see that sellers will note when the last head gasket change was.

That said, both the Forester and the Outback are good cars.

Lesbians must like to ski/snowboard a helluva lot more than any other "group" of people because there are a helluva lot more Subarus at ski resorts than any other vehicle.

I had to replace almost all the gaskets on my used 1996 Outback wagon w/ 170,000 miles on it 2 years ago, but I've heard much better & longer-lasting head gaskets have been used since 2000.

I'd rather have bought an Impreza simply because they get 7 or so more MPG on average & I don't need the extra Outback space, but used Imprezas were/are much harder to find than Outbacks.
I have a 2008 Outback

Just dropped 2g on head gaskets and timing belt... #{^+#%>€\!

Other than that, it's been great! Lol

I still don't get the lesbo thing... Wish it came with a pair tho.. )
