He has usually

has played like he drank heavily right before the game. He had an easy double play ball before that he was way too nonchalant about and took his time getting it to 1st and Gardner was safe, then he drops another potential double play ball, and then has a boneheaded base running play there

I don't think Warren and Phelps are "shit bags," more like moderately talented bulldogs, but your point is well taken. Both the starting rotation and the relief rotation are a little upside down right now. We will see.
can't let this game get away from us here

score some freakin runs here.
I do think
MookGiants : 4/18/2014 10:28 pm : link
Phelps is a shit bag. He's got mediocre and pretty much should be just a long reliever.

Warren is OK, but exactly what has he done to get the nod for these big spots that Betances hasn't? Joe wont give betances a shot in a big spot, its infuriating. He's got awesome stuff, see what he can do
I think both are serviceable relievers

Betances may allow a runner Mook. Joe can't let him pitch. C'mon now.
it's not Joe's fault
MookGiants : 4/18/2014 10:49 pm : link
but he needs to give Betances a shot. You don't know if he can do it unless you actually give him a chance, and he refuses to do that

How can you prove yourself when you aren't allowed to pitch in a big spot? He either pitches in blowout wins, blowout losses, or games the Yankees are behind. God forbid Joe put him in when the game is within a run or two with a lead

He's pitched 6.1 innings so far and only given up 1 hit, but somehow he's behind David Phelps, Adam Warren, and Cesar Cabral.

Why pitch him two innings in a blowout last night?
The bullpen will be fine

MookGiants : 4/18/2014 11:03 pm : link
Joe has with Phelps. He's got mediocre stuff, OK control. He's just mediocre, he's never going to be a top reliever, and he isn't pitching all that well this year, why does he keep getting the ball in a big spot?

It's really odd because Joe has always done a good job with the bullpen, and i know its tough without Robertson, but it just doesn't make any sense why he wont throw Betances into the fire. He's earned a shot between spring training and how he has pitched in limited action so far.
our BP took a hit
RasputinPrime : 4/18/2014 11:05 pm : link
when Claiborne forgot how to pitch over the offseason. I think Phelps is getting the benefit of the doubt because Joe wanted the flexibility of having multiple long relievers ready to save the starters early in the season.
I honestly think Joe doesn't trust Betances
Kulish29 : 4/18/2014 11:05 pm : link
Which is fucking ridiculous because he keeps throwing Phelps out there.

That doesn't make any sense. Claiborne sucked towards the end of last year and no one expected him to be any big part going forward. And the 2nd part makes no sense, too. I have no problem with having Phelps in the bullpen, but there's no reason he should be coming in in a big spot over Betances time and time again.
...
Kulish29 : 4/18/2014 11:10 pm : link
Betances: 6.2 IP, .789 WHIP

Phelps: 7.2 IP, 1.304 WHIP
Just my opinion
RasputinPrime : 4/18/2014 11:12 pm : link
that they were expecting something from Claiborne and they got nothing. The fact that they brought Nuno, Phelps and Warren with them says everything about the lack of legitimate BP guys available to compete for the big club right now. While those guys may do just fine in mop up duty I don't expect any of them to hold a lead late in a game.

I hope Cash is looking to steal a solid LHP that can work the role they somehow thought Thornton was going to fill. That was the move that bothered me the most. He was left off the Sox playoff roster for a reason and yet we signed him to be our primary LH reliever?
for those who haven't seen it yet
RasputinPrime : 4/18/2014 11:14 pm : link
check out Stanton's walk off grand salami. Man he has untouchable power. What a waste on that team. Miami should package Puig/Kemp and parts for Stanton so a legit franchise can enjoy what looks like a breakout MVP season in the making.

They need to GET healthy, two of their best positional prospects in Heathcott and Bird still haven't seen game action and would appear to be at least a week or two away, while Campos and Turley have yet to appear in game action. But the guys who are playing are, with a few exceptions, doing well. The low-A hitters are doing better of late and guys like Lail and Severino are really holding their own.

Did nothing to address this pen in the offseason. I would of taken a shot with Nathan.Rodney. Balfour or Benoit ... Last nights game was a joke all around . And we better pray Beltran is ok because I don't like this line up at all even with him. If he Is out this line up has a chance to be worse then last year
The bullpen
MookGiants : 4/19/2014 1:57 pm : link
will be fine when Robertson gets back and Joe finally gives Betances a shot.

No reason for them to spend big money on the pen, they have young arms in AAA who are very close and they have enough to work with in the majors once Robertson comes back.

Spending big money on the pen is usually a mistake
and LOL

at the lineup having a chance to be worse than last year if Beltran isn't OK.

I know what you mean, man. Just think of where this team would be right now if they had the smart sense to sign Nathan. His 8 era and 1.9 whip would surely lead this team to 150 wins, minimum. and think of the possibilities if he can somehow start to break 90 mph once in awhile! Wow. His "dead arm" issue sure would be a welcome sight in this pen. And for a mere $8 Million per? Pffft, damn Cashman, idiot.
