Draft Scenario

oldmoose58 : 4/19/2014 11:58 am
What follows is the product of a 4 1/2 hour discussion by 5 veteran Giants fans, the youngest of which is 60 years old and two are rabid alumni of the University of Pittsburgh.

This scheme is as follows: step one we tried to select the first 15 players to be drafted. We realize that there can be variations in this group but we feel that we are close. According to the scheme it makes little difference if variation is employed.

Accordingly the first 15 draftees should be, no fixed order;
Clowney DE
Mack LB
Barr LB
Robinson OT
Mathews OT
Watkins WR
Evans WR
Gilbert CB
Dennard CB
Bortles QB
Carr QB
Ebron TE
Levan OT
Martin OT
Donald DT

We realize that someone might want to substitute; for example Mosley or Mix or Lee but it makes no difference because the exercise is all about Aaron Donald. The process involves the first 15 players drafted of which the Giants have number 12.

If Donald is taken in the first 11 pics then the process takes a different turn. We will proceed here as if he is available at number 12.

Consideration 1: what does JR and the giant hierarchy feel about Aaron Donald? Our group after seeing a large part of seven games is largely convinced that we are looking at the next Warren Sapp. If that is the consensus opinion then we would draft Donald and proceed as follows:
Step 2: in our unbridled enthusiasm over Donald we cannot neglect the offensive line. Assuming that it would be hazardous to put faith in Beatty, we would have to assume that the starting left tackle is not now on our roster; unless it is Pugh.

Therefore looking at position number 43 in the second round we would have to consider to draft as a right tackle one of the following:
A. Richardson of Tennessee
Kouandjio of Alabama
Moses of Virginia
Bitinio of Nevada
James of Tennessee
Terry of North Dakota State

Considering the concern that none of these are individuals can play NFL left tackle we came to the third step; we believe that Pugh played left tackle at Syracuse. In other words could the versatility of Pugh make possible the drafting of Aaron Donald?

Should the drafting of Aaron Donald precede Giants number 12 pick then the first-round pick will go to the offensive line. Either Lewan or Martin.

We really can't do badly either way. We do not think however that there is a defensive lineman in the draft with the possible exception of Clowney, who holds the promise that Donald does. Hence the enthusiasm.

We have spoken our piece so feel free to tear it asunder.

Have a great and healthy draft. Go Giants!

Regards, oldmoose58
That makes a lot of sense

as it did for the 30 other posts describing how the Giants might draft if Donald is available.
If Lewan is considered a better prospect than all the OTs

in last years draft, including Pugh, why would the Giants pass him up, particularly since there is a sense of uncertainty at OT and the off the field incidents don't seem to be too concerning to most?
So your group which includes two Pitt alums

wants to pick Donald. I don't really see the point of nameing the first 15 picks but I think Manzeil and Bridgewater will go in the top 15.The question is do the Giants feel the same about Donald or would they prefer to get a stud LT and keep Pugh at RT and then use the 2nd pick on WR,TE,OL,or something else. The scenario you are suggesting is to move Pugh to a new spot at LT and have the 2nd round pick start at RT,I would rather keep Pugh where he is and get a LT in round 1.

I can't remember a draft where we had basically one big cult followers of the AD fan club. Now on when someone lists you just scan the entire thing and see how many times the guy who shall not be named is mentioned.

analysis regarding Moses is incorrect in two senses. First, he won't be available at #43. He may well go in the top twenty. He certainly won't make it out of the first round. Second, he can play LT, and in fact played there his entire senior season at UVA, where he did very well. He may well be better suited at RT, but he can play LT. Moses is who I want at #12 if we go tackle. He is a better prospect than Martin, Lewan, or CK IMO.
If David Diehl can play left tackle

You guys that want an OT at 12 over everyone else who might be

available need to reach some kind of consensus on who the pick should be. My own feelings are if you can get a blue goose OT you almost have to take them because the oppurtunity to pick them is so rare. To me thats Matthews, Robinson, and maybe Lewan I could easily shorten that list to just Matthews. One thing harder to get than a blue goose is a pass rushing DT so I think Donald will be gone at 12. Someone will feel like they have to take a shot at him or someone like Dallas or Chicago will trade up to get him. Logic says to me the pick will be Martyin of course logic only seems to prevail in about one out of five drafts, so this will be interesting to follow.
if your assessment of Donald is the next Warren Sapp

Then he will not make it to 12....so we can stop this madness
I think Beatty was a good LT candidate

He certainly had the feet but he got the rep as being soft, had a crappy year and then got hurt so we may never know. Seemed like he had potential though.
