I agree we need another O linemen in this draft. I just think passing on Aaron Donald would be regretted for years. With the additions we have made to the back 7, I think Donald is the perfect fit. If Donald is gone, I clearly want to go OL with the 12th pick, even though that player is very likely a backup in year one.
I've watched him play at least half dozen times. He'd be a perfect fit for us. To me he's the most complete DL in the draft.
However, this draft is all about the Qbs. If there is a run on them early all bets are off. I think our first pick is going to be DL, OL or WR...it just depends on who's there when we pick.
whats with all this 12th pick on an OL wont play right away???
why not?
we had the worst OLine I've ever seen last year - we had no talent other than pugh - if we like an OL enough to take him at 12 he will start right away, book it
I see the starting day OL as Beatty, Schwartz, Walton, Snee, and Pugh. I see the backup T as Charles Brown and the backup G as John Jerry. That is basically 3 new players in the starting 5, since Snee was non existent last year with the injuries and time missed.
The Giants generally keep 8 OL on the final roster, so our 3 recently drafted Guards (Brewer, Mosely, and Herrmann) better be bringing their A game starting Monday.
I only see roster room for one OL from this years draft and I hope that player can play Center.
since 2003, and that was Dave Diehl. We have blown off taking OL's so often that we are in the position that we must rebuild or parish. And I nor should anyone else trust them to make a good OL pick after the second.
I like Donald, but he will not start next to Hankins this coming year. Cullen Jenkins will. When he plays it will be as an extra pass rusher, and because he's such a good runner, they might use him on kick coverage.
An OL will play a lot more downs than Donald will this year. And while I do not doubt that the Giants will draft a 3 tech this year, I'm not sure it will be Donald.
Btw, here's how I know they will. 2006 Cofield/2007 Alford. 2010 Joseph/ 2011 Austin. 2013 Hankins/20014 PTBNL.
We'll see what happens, but fixing the OL is job 1.
the Giants can address OL in the draft in rounds 2-4 easily.. However they will not be able to address the need on the DL and there IS a need there as well in the later rounds of this draft..
While I would have no issue with taking a OL.. the question remains who are you taking.. Robinson will be gone.. Matthews will probably be gone.. Do you really want Lewan?.. Not only is his off the field stuff a potential issue but also I am concerned that Michigan often put a TE on his side.. Cyrus Kouandjio @12 is a bit early for him. Same could be said of Martin...
But you could possibly get Cyrus Kouandjio in round 2.. Or Morgan Moses or Joel Bitonio.. so you could address tackle there.. or you could address Guard with Trai Turner, Gabe Jackson even Chris Watt in later rounds.. and there will be Centers in rounds 3-5 as well..
The Giants can get a player like Donald and still bolster the OL.. its not one or the other..
Now if a player like Matthews somehow falls to 12.. yeah you grab him..
take him, but think it and all the debate and love for him on this board will be irrelevant because he'll most likely be gone by #12. But if Jerry passes him up, wow will there will be screams of protest from this board.
Unless they think they're getting an upper echelon LT for the next decade.
The most important reason why is because this team - more so than any year since 2008 - is desperate for playmakers on both sides of the ball. Losing Nicks, Tuck, Osi, and having nothing at TE has left this team with almost no depth at receiver and rushing the passer. Those were the 2 hallmarks of the 2012 SB team and obviously pass rush has been the calling card of both SB runs.
Additionally they have a reasonably early 2nd round pick and OL is one of the strengths of the draft. They can add a meaningful prospect at 43, and that's where they should do so if they identify a WR/TE/DE/DT/LB whom they are confident can be an impact player day 1. Plain and simple those are bigger needs and this draft is shallow in pass rushers especially.
Lastly while Schwartz is the only guy you would pencil in as a starter they did add 3 other players who are under 30, started over 20 games in the NFL, and are former 2nd/3rd round picks. They've already accomplished a good amount at that position and I just don't see enough of a difference between Martin and guys who may be there at 43 like Bitonio, Yankey, Moses, Richburg, Sua Filo, etc.
for the record I am hoping they draft Martin/Matthews in round 1, a WR in two , A center in three and then CJ Fiedorowicz out of Iowa in round 4.. and then go for some RB in round 5..
but I could see them going for a DT who is unique like Donald.. and I can see them loading up on OL later in the draft..
However the reason I wouldnt go Donald in round one.. is because I have come to the conclusion that pushing the offensive needs back a round is not wisdom.. If they take OL in round 1.. then can get a good WR in round two.. there will be plenty to chose from.. then come back and get your center in round 3.. get a TE in round 4..
As a draft that makes more sense.. Eli needs all the help he can get.. not just protection but targets as well
I really like Donald and would take him if the OL wasn't such a mess.
