Owens never got a ring. Garcia never got one. Mooch's career went nowhere. We made changes for the better and won two rings. Niners fans have suffered plenty in the past three seasons.
still wondering how a player open to get a pass gets tackled
I've made peace with it anyway, though. We more than likely were not beating TB and then we probably don't have Eli, either. And who knows if we'd have won just ONE SB since let alone 2.
I think I was unapproachable for like 2 full weeks after this game happened. Ugh.
I always thought that Fassel & Lynn blew it with bad play calling . And , the refs completely blew at the end by not huddling . Fassel needed to throw a shit fit at the end & not meekly leave the field. Not sure if it would have made a difference but it always bugged me that the official was not aware that he was eligible & flag should have bee thrown. Offsetting penalties would have been replay. Plus, field goal holder should have downed the ball with bad snap. Wonder if ST coach told him that. Game made me sick.
that loss just hurt, especially with the way our Offense was clicking with plenty of momentum.
Someone on BBI said it the other day, talent gets you to the dance but coaching and clutch plays brings home the jewelry. We didn't have the latter two on that day.
Cost him the game and likely his career, imo, was walking off the field that day. I would have never left the field without a complete explanation of the call.
turned it on to see the final replay Seubert getting tackled. It panned to the Giants' sideline which was going nuts. Collinworth was pretty much like he was ineligable so the Giants are wrong. Boy, was he wrong.
after commenting on it in the "Kerry Collins" thread.
Just a perfect storm of screw-ups. The Shockey drop. The back-back personal fouls calls on Shaun Williams that negated back-back PF calls on San Fran that would have pushed their kickoff back even further. The two bad snaps by Trey Junkin(never mind Ray Handley, THAT is a name that truly should never be repeated), the fact that Matt Allen could have just spiked the ball on the second bad snap. The blown PI call was just the icing on the cake.
And I had forgotten that Ron Winter was the ref that day. The league was 11 years too late in forcing out that incompetent buffoon. What a travesty that they let him hang around all this time.

Francesa and Russo killed Collinworth. I think he actually was so apologetic he talked about it during another game.
Yes, the defense cost us along with a bad ref call to end the game but if Shockey holds onto that pass the game is over. It wasn't a hard pass just lost his concentration.
was that after the play they showed him on the sidelines chewing out an equipment guy about his gloves. Just a total refusal to accept responsibility for his drop.
there is not enough time for a 9er comeback, also didnt Fassel shit the bed by not running the ball to kill clock? I will never re watch that game so I will nor find out unless you guys tell me
. . . continually is discussed on this board 12 years later. It was worse than "The Fumble" game because that 1978 team wasn't going anywhere anyway. But both "The Fumble" and "The Collapse" opened up the door for two championships. Without "The Fumble" there is no George Young, no Ray Perkins, no Lawrence Taylor and subsequently, no 1986 and 1990. Without 'The Collapse" their is no Eli, No Coughlin and no 2007 and 2011.
So, if I could travel back in time, and had a chance to alter the outcome of those games somehow, I wouldn't do it. It would KILL ME, but I wouldn't do it.
That being said, the 2002 playoff loss is probably the only loss in Giants history that is completely unwatchable by about 90% of those of us that saw it the first time.
I still hurts. And when the NFL issued that press release saying that the last play should have been a penalty??
However, I seem to remember shit head Shockey had a sure touchdown and instead he decides to make full contact with a 49er defender near the end zone. They never scored that TD and I blame the asshole for that.
it doesn't cause me quite the pain it did at the time - there dis no way you could ever get me to watch it again.
Fuk Fassell and the boat he came in on - I blame that loss entirely on him. He coached the most undisciplined teams of all times - I am grateful he is gone.
I don't remember the Shockey drop, or the end of the game - I just remember Garcia kept getting the ball again after we did nada and he took it to us at will, over and over and over again.
The 2003 team opened the season beating a Rams team that went something like 12-4. It went down the tubes after suffering a boatload of injuries - including to Collins. That's what brought us Coughlin and Eli.
never have, so my memory may be off. But what I remember clearly and vividly as I was melting down over the botched field goal was Fassel calmly walking with his head lowered making absolutely NO attempt to get an explanation from the refs.
I would have been going absolutely berserk. I would have kept my team on the field and ran after the refs, insisting on an explanation. I would have NOT left the field willingly that day.
He didn't even come close to questioning what the heck had happened, in spite of the enormity of the situation and the obvious issues that transpired. He just accepted the defeat.

Fassel gets a lot more leeway if they win a playoff game the year before. The owners would have said the team had a lot of injuries and he deserved another chance.
But coming off of that collapse and then to go 4-12, no way would he survive.
And Collins got hurt in december against the skins and going into that game they were 4-8. They absolutely carried over that collapse to the next season and the team quit on him on top of the injuries
Anybody who questions just how talented Shockey was should watch this game. At this time, he was one of the top offensive players in the NFL. Nobody had an answer for the guy.
Peterson, who was considered one of the best defenders in the league, could not match up with him. They also split him out and he beat CBs on slants and double moves.
The play when he went after Peterson was one of the best plays a TE can make. First he beat him on a double move. Caught the ball over the middle and ran right through the S who had him lined up for a KO shot. THe S crumbled on impact at Shockey's feet. He spun. Peterson ran past him. He avoided the CB and knocked Peterson on his ass at the end zone. It was a beauty. And then he followed it up with a TD catch (They split him wide and he beat the S on a fade route.)
Shockey didn't have his head on straight but he was a true field tilter at this time.
This loss still hurts because I am convinced Shockey (and Barber) were the perfect combo to take that the overrated Bucs. I think they would have went down to TB and handed them a beating. And eventually won the SB that year because after TB it was an easy ride to the SB win.
Well the meltdown really started when Shockey dropped that touchdown
Remember it like yesterday. Sucks(ed)
If we dont blow that game we dont wind up with Eli

"Bummer..."

Exactly. The league apologized the next day and Fassel said what good was that unless they give us another chance to kick a FG.

UGHHHHH! THANKS A LOT!
2002 San Fran was just a team blowing a 38 - 14 3rd Quarter lead in the playoffs.

Fuck - even when it happened I was convinced they would replay that down even the next day.
A horrendous fuckup because some twat that didn't know the rules arrogantly stayed ignorant.
His reward - a fucking promotion.
