Carlos Hyde and the Big Backs

TC : 4/19/2014 8:50 pm
I’ve been watching some of the video available at the site, Draft Breakdown, of some of the bigger backs in this year’s draft. This site focuses on the player selected during the course of entire games. The number of games available to view varies by prospect.

I’ve been reading reviews of various players on different websites, and just about all of them have Carlos Hyde ranked as the top 230, or plus, pound back. I’ve watched the videos of him, but I need you to help me out, because while he’s a decent RB, I just don’t consistently see significant superiority in his play. He’s not slow, but not overly quick either. He’s got pretty good, but not fabulous vision. And he often hesitates at the line. But most significantly, while he can sometimes move the pile, he’s often not that hard to bring down!

I’d compare him to Andre Williams from BC who, judging from video, is similar in some respects, though Hyde has a bit better vision, and somewhat more power, as Williams actually goes down pretty easily.

Among the four I’ve focused on, easily the most impressive is Jeremy Hill of L.S.U. He’s quicker to line, he has slightly better vision, but most significant for a larger power back, he is usually a lot more difficult to bring down. To me, he looks a lot better than Hyde in his games, and he’s often doing it against SEC talent.

Now I know I must be crazy, because this isn’t what I’ve been reading at all about the backs at most draft websites. And to certify my insanity, because we all KNOW he sucks, the hardest running, most violent and difficult runner to bring down in this draft that I’ve seen on video is James Wilder. Guess I need to get my eyes checked. Though I do acknowledge he’s slower to the line than either Hyde or Hill. But he also has good vision.

Hill would be the number one back

in this draft if not for the off field concerns. Carlos Hyde is not the type of back that will wow you on film. But he wears out defenses. He's just a battering ram out there. Unfortunately, I think Hyde will have a very good, very short career.
or he could

be a Bettis.

Although when Bettis came out of Notre Dame,

he was faster than Hyde.
Hyde is the best and most complete back in this class hands down, imo

He's a slightly better version of Eddie Lacy who was Rookie of the Year last year and 2nd team All Pro. He's a big back that will hammer you and always falls forward but has nimble feet with quickness and agility that you don't see from backs his size. He also has good hands to receive screens and dump offs out of the backfield. Last but not least he's an excellent blocker, recognizing blitzes and at times lining up as the FB for Braxton Miller or one of the smaller backs. He's a 1st rd talent that will probably go in the 2nd because the premium isn't there for RBs anymore. I thought Lacy should've been a 1st rounder too and the Packers got him late in the 2nd. We may have bigger needs but if Lacy is available at 43 I'd have no issue. He wouldn't be my first choice but I wouldn't be mad either. He'll be a stud.
I really don't thing Hyde has the speed to be a lead back.

He's a plodder.
I usually agree or just listen with what sjny has to say

About prospects, but I agree with TTH. I don't even know Hyde's 40 time, but his game speed just isn't there in my opinion. I like Jeremy Hill a lot more as a prospect.

4.66 at the combine. No pro day run. hill rand a 4.66 at the combine, and a 4.52 at the LSU pro day.
Surprised to see Hill ran the same 40 as Hyde

But it doesn't bother me. I simply saw a faster RB with a lot more wiggle in Hill than I did with Hyde. Interesting though.
Really like Hill

Big back with good moves and soft hands. Hope he gets the off the field stuff taken care of.
Hyde ran a 4.66 combine
sjnyfan : 4/19/2014 10:54 pm : link
but pulled up at the end of his run due to his hammy. He didn't run a 2nd 40 at the combine or participate at his pro day because it was less than two weeks apart. I haven't heard anything on whether he plans to run before the draft but I do believe he's faster than 4.66
If Carlos Hyde is there in Round Two

I'll draft him. Too good to pass up there. Zack Martin and Hyde would make a big contribution to this offense.
No to round2 RB

Wait until day 3. Terrance West, or Carey

I agree. The RB from Wisconsin too, White, even though he's a little on the small side. He's good in pass protection though.

There is next to no point
LPete : 4/20/2014 7:37 am : link
taking a RB inside the first 150 picks until we get the offensive line some primo talent.
I like it
Nomad Crow on the Madison : 4/20/2014 8:05 am : link
Charles Sims in Round 4 or 5. Speed, can catch out of the backfield, will pass block.
I like the BC prospect
JonC : 4/20/2014 9:51 am : link
What round(s)is he projected to go?
I can honestly see the Giants
BillyBoy8384 : 4/20/2014 11:29 am : link
Taking a RB as early as the 4th if our first 3 picks are what Reese wanted, lets say WR OL TE and if a player like Hyde or Carey is sitting there I could see us taking a RB in the 4th RD. I think Jeremy( I know Ive written Stephen more then once, mix up with the WR on the Jets, apologies) will be gone by the middle of the 3rd.
Im down for even taking Tre Mason in the 5th if hes there. Kid runs hard

I was very impressed with Andre Williams' Combine video and highlight videos. But when I watched more video of his games, not just his highlight videos, I developed concerns. His vision isn't great, he can be tentative when approaching the line, and most of the time he can be taken down without much difficulty.
I'd be thrilled if the Giants picked Hill

I like him a lot. That performance vs Iowa with essentially zero passing attack was as one of the most impressive performances of the bowl season. He essentially was the LSU offense, and Iowa knew there was no threat of the pass and they still couldnt stop him.
