Tyler Gaffney - Good day 3 selection?

Ira : 4/20/2014 7:46 am
I doubt that we're going to pick a running back early, but I'd be surprised if we don't pick one in the third day. After Jennings, we have Scott who is coming off a serious injury and still hasn't proven he's addressed his fumblitis and problems with blocking; Hillis who's solid, but with no upside and Cox who hasn't proven much of anything.

Gaffney is big, athletic back who was a two sport guy and is just really starting to focus on football. His speed and agility numbers were better than the smaller backs. And he carried the ball 300 times last season, so defenses were keying on him. And he's from Stanford, so he'll probably learn the offense pretty quickly. We probably could pick him up in the fifth or sixth round and he should give us good value there.

What do you think of him as a day 3 pick?

Makes sense for NYG in later rds.
Highlight films are misleading

but I have seen him play a couple of times, and he is a hard-nosed back with enough giddy-up.
RB early

is fine by me the second weakest position on the roster after TE. I am fan of Terrence West out of Towson. I think he would make a great 4th round pick.
Scott is not on the team

A RB in day 3 would be good.
Gaffney

to me is a bigger "law firm" (Green Ellis). Smart, hard working, excellent short yardage, good at everything (blocking, receiving etc.). Not a dynamic runner, but should contribute nicely.
ZZ clearly Ira meant Wilson

Yes, thanks.
I think we'll look for a late round guy to compete with Cox.

But with all the other needs, and at least some chance Wilson returns to play (in 2015 even) I don't see JR dropping an early pick on a RB.
RBS that can be serviceable like Hillis can be picked up as FAs

anytime.
I would be for it

Gaffney quietly put up the 2nd best season from a Stanford RB ever behind only Toby Gerhart in 2009. He has very good feet and vision, important traits for an RB of course. He's also tough and big enough at 220 lbs. to play smash mouth football as well as carry the load in a game. He's a smart player who picks up his blocking assignments and knows how to get open for passes coming his way. His legs are fresh too. This was the only season where he was the #1 ball carrier after playing behind Gerhart and Stepfan Taylor. Before his 330 carries this year he only had 156 total from 2009-11 and last year he played baseball in the Pirates organization. I think he's going to get overlooked but will surprise some and probably outlast some of the RBs that go before him in this draft barring any serious injury.
if he was still sitting

there in the fourth round, I would absolutely pounce on Jeremy Hill. He is going to be an all around stud
I think Gaffney

would be a great choice in the 5th. Last year, whenever there was a big play needed at Stanford (3rd down or 4th down), the play always involved Gaffney and he delivered.

If the Giants take a running back in this draft, it is going to be a back that will protect Eli. I see two backs that fit that mold-Gaffney and James White of Wisconsin. Both should be available to the Giants in the 5th round and I'd be happy with either.
There are things to like about Gaffney.

And there are some things that are concerning.

Likes: He can move the pile and drag tacklers. Which is very surprising given that he runs very deliberately, and doesn't appear explosive. He has good long speed when he breaks into the open. He normally runs with two hands around the ball. (The video shows him getting stripped, but it doesn't happen very often.) He's smart. (Hey, it's Stanford!) He's very patient/tentative when he approaches the L.O.S.

Concerns: He's slow to the L.O.S. Doesn't show a burst. He runs very deliberately without explosion. He's very patient/tentative when he approaches the L.O.S.

Given his style of running it's all the more surprising and impressive that he shows well above average power after contact. But I'm concerned that given that style, his skills might not translate as well to the NFL where he's going to be playing against bigger, faster and stronger competition than in school. My concern is that he's going to wind up getter swallowed up at the P.O.A., or worse, stopped in the backfield by any defenders who penetrate.

That's a guy I've been looking at lately.

it's always great to know your thoughts on an issue!
I don't think his game will transfer to the NFL.

Reminds me a bit of Gartrell Johnson we picked from the Chargers PS a few years ago. Not enough quickness or wiggle for the NFL, if that Oregon tape is representative.
