pick up Prince's 5th year option. I say this is a no brainer. To have two good CBs locked up for this year and next year is a must in this pass happy league. I do not see them using a high pick on a cb in this years draft (maybe a late day 2 or day 3 pick). And if Thurman leaves next season its would be nice not to worry about losing Prince to some team that would over pay.

The New York Giants have not made a decision on CB Prince Amukamara and whether they will pick up his fifth-year option.

They are going to have to pay either Prince or Thurmond after 2014
All these factors play into leverage for the Giants, and if I were the team it would make good business sense to negotiate a deal now rather than waiting for Prince to put up a very solid campaign where he plays tremendously or even outplays DRC, which would spell all sorts of negotiating problems for the team.
The calculated risk of signing him now, and keeping his CAP low for the next couple years is worth what we're expecting out of him.
If Gilbert Fuller and Denard are all possibilities at 12 .

I agree with Rory here on this. BPA is always and option and DBs for the future are still not settled.
It's very hard to play CB at the NFL level and be good at it. Prince missed almost his whole 1st year IIRC. He's very good and doesn't call attention to himself. He's a quiet player.
A multi-year deal makes the most sense for Giants but if Prince/Agent don't like the numbers, then i guess Reese can always use the 5th year option and then determine next offseason where they want to invest $ in the secondary based on their play.
Taking a Corner at #12 would be an aggressive move imo that ignores the strengths/weaknesses on the roster.
I like Prince and his game and would love to have him long term, but economic considerations and a deep draft just might be enough to let him go for the right price (part of a deal to move up in the first or maybe a second rounder on his own).
I think this is worthy of discussion.
They can take their time trying to extend him on their terms and if it doesn't work the can decide next year if they want to use it or not
If Prince and Cromartie shut down wideouts this year as I suspect they will both be around next year.
I didn't realize this......ignore my comment above

I think they kept Trel due to the increase in the salary cap, and are going to see how things turn out in his final year. If he's worth paying, they'll consider it, but only at their price. Odds are that Trel's contract will just expire, and they won't re-sign him due to his age, and younger and cheaper options being available on the market in 2015. I would have went after T.J. Ward myself this off-season and cut Trel.
I could also see Rolle easily putting up another really good season this year. He has a better secondary around him and it allows him to "freelance" a bit more and get in the mix to make plays/turnovers. He is also one of the better blitzers on this team (not hard on this team) so lets see if Fewell turns him loose more there as well.
keep prince AND draft a CB at 12 and you've built a Super Unit, a secondary that can withstand the inevitable injuries that plague that group
of course the hawks also had a great pass rush and great linebacker play, and also had a scheme that willingly bent the rules
(and for the record I don't want a CB at 12)
Absolutely. If the Giants can lock him up to a longer term deal that would minimize his cap hit this year but maybe increase it in future years when we have more large salaries coming off the books and there will likely be cap increases leaguewide I would support it, but the cap hit on a one year deal is a bit prohibitive
the guy is a very good CB against the run and pass.. and I think he's still getting better.. at his young age (24).. he'd be a guy I'd want to have around with DRC for the next 4 years..
Maybe around $5M-$6M, but I cannot imagine he would sign for anything less. Unless i am missing what Cornerbacks get paid in the NFL.
The idea used to be to put together a nucleus of good young players to form the core of the team for a number of years.
And then they bring in journeyman cast-offs from other teams and sign them to one year contracts. Not just the Giants, but suddenly lots of teams have discovered the one year show-me contract.
I don't know. This may be what you have to do now. The league has changed so much since the salary cap.
I've seen a few people here write that they should tinker with the cap to give teams a cap discount for re-signing their own draftees or undrafted free agents who have never been with another team. I kind of like that idea.
