Giants brass still has not decided if they want to

superspynyg : 4/20/2014 9:35 am
pick up Prince's 5th year option. I say this is a no brainer. To have two good CBs locked up for this year and next year is a must in this pass happy league. I do not see them using a high pick on a cb in this years draft (maybe a late day 2 or day 3 pick). And if Thurman leaves next season its would be nice not to worry about losing Prince to some team that would over pay.

Giants | No decision on Prince Amukamara option
Sat, 19 Apr 2014 23:12:18 -0700
The New York Giants have not made a decision on CB Prince Amukamara and whether they will pick up his fifth-year option.

I remain one of Prince's biggest supporters here

but that option pricetag is steep. If they're planning to retain him, then they're more likely already trying to get a multi-year contract done.
Amukamara
Mike in NY : 4/20/2014 9:50 am : link
The problem is the cap cost. I believe he would count between $6-$7 Million if they pick up the option and not sure he is worth that much
I'm
AcidTest : 4/20/2014 10:09 am : link
thinking that despite all our other needs, CB could be a surprise day two pick. Prince, Thurmond, and James I think all have contracts that expire in 2015.
Prince
stretch234 : 4/20/2014 10:18 am : link
Isn't the option only guaranteed against injury. They can exercise the option and still negotiate a long term deal.

They are going to have to pay either Prince or Thurmond after 2014
I'm w JonC on this
GiantTuff1 : 4/20/2014 10:24 am : link
Amukamara really came on last season, but he hasn't strung it together two years in a row, plus the signing of DRC more of less shows that DRC's the number 1 CB, which allows the Giants to pigeon hole Prince in the CB 1.5/2 money spot.

All these factors play into leverage for the Giants, and if I were the team it would make good business sense to negotiate a deal now rather than waiting for Prince to put up a very solid campaign where he plays tremendously or even outplays DRC, which would spell all sorts of negotiating problems for the team.

The calculated risk of signing him now, and keeping his CAP low for the next couple years is worth what we're expecting out of him.
I dont think we will see a direction on his contract

until after the Draft.

If Gilbert Fuller and Denard are all possibilities at 12 .

I agree with Rory here on this. BPA is always and option and DBs for the future are still not settled.
I also think the Giants
mrvax : 4/20/2014 10:56 am : link
are holding off to get max leverage. You have to be a fool not to try to keep Prince. I think he will get a long term deal unless he prices himself off the table like Linval did.

It's very hard to play CB at the NFL level and be good at it. Prince missed almost his whole 1st year IIRC. He's very good and doesn't call attention to himself. He's a quiet player.
If I am the Giants I have seen enough of Prince
Jimmy Googs : 4/20/2014 11:25 am : link
to determine that he is a keeper, regardless of our other guys in the secondary.

A multi-year deal makes the most sense for Giants but if Prince/Agent don't like the numbers, then i guess Reese can always use the 5th year option and then determine next offseason where they want to invest $ in the secondary based on their play.

Taking a Corner at #12 would be an aggressive move imo that ignores the strengths/weaknesses on the roster.
This is a no brainer
Chip : 4/20/2014 11:31 am : link
Keep Prince. A much better corner than what people think on this board. My two cents
but
shocktheworld : 4/20/2014 11:33 am : link
the decision can't be made after the draft....they have until May 5th..
I think they are waiting as long as possible to
The Duke : 4/20/2014 12:15 pm : link
compare Prince and Thurmond as they will probably only be able to sign one of them to a long term deal. Why rush and make a decision until they absolutely have too? Even OTAs, mini and training camps could show them a lot between the two in helping to decide.
Prince is a solid
Giants2012 : 4/20/2014 12:18 pm : link
Tackler and ok coverage corner. Would be nice to extend him at a lower annual salary and smaller cap hit.
I think it's possible, based on who we've signed as free agents,
MOOPS : 4/20/2014 12:28 pm : link
the size of the DRC contract and the cost to retain Prince in the near future, that he possibly could be in play on draft day as trade bait.
I like Prince and his game and would love to have him long term, but economic considerations and a deep draft just might be enough to let him go for the right price (part of a deal to move up in the first or maybe a second rounder on his own).
I think this is worthy of discussion.
why would they make a decision now?
Blue Baller : 4/20/2014 12:36 pm : link
The option gives them the flexibility to wait.

They can take their time trying to extend him on their terms and if it doesn't work the can decide next year if they want to use it or not
If they kept Antrelle they'll keep Prince at that price
SGMen : 4/20/2014 12:37 pm : link
I was STUNNED that they kept Antrelle at his $7m pricetag and at his age. Yes, he is a leader and coming off possibly his best season but I would have thought they'd have worked out a multi-year (really 2 year) deal with some incentives that would get him close to $7m.

If Prince and Cromartie shut down wideouts this year as I suspect they will both be around next year.

Not an easy decision to make

Nobody is afraid to throw Prince's way. So far he has be OK but nothing special.
I'll bet

I think they kept Trel due to the increase in the salary cap, and are going to see how things turn out in his final year. If he's worth paying, they'll consider it, but only at their price. Odds are that Trel's contract will just expire, and they won't re-sign him due to his age, and younger and cheaper options being available on the market in 2015. I would have went after T.J. Ward myself this off-season and cut Trel.
I agree that they should just let Rolle's contract expire
Jimmy Googs : 4/20/2014 5:48 pm : link
and deal with him as a normal free agent next season. And with his age, maybe we can get him to something reasonable (and lower) but you never know.

I could also see Rolle easily putting up another really good season this year. He has a better secondary around him and it allows him to "freelance" a bit more and get in the mix to make plays/turnovers. He is also one of the better blitzers on this team (not hard on this team) so lets see if Fewell turns him loose more there as well.

Prince,
Doomster : 4/20/2014 6:22 pm : link
is not a game changer.....he's dropped more int's than he's made....like I said before, he reminds me of Linval Joseph....a solid player, but not someone you spend big money one...
CB at 12
area junc : 4/20/2014 8:28 pm : link
maybe the giants took a look at the seahawks DBs dominating the other team's WRs and want to do the same

keep prince AND draft a CB at 12 and you've built a Super Unit, a secondary that can withstand the inevitable injuries that plague that group

of course the hawks also had a great pass rush and great linebacker play, and also had a scheme that willingly bent the rules

(and for the record I don't want a CB at 12)
Don't see the downside in extending
sjh50 : 4/21/2014 9:34 am : link
If only guarantee is for injury. That being said, with the DRC signing, imho, the writing was/is on the wall for prince. Although I believe he is a good to very good corner in this league, I wouldn't be happy with the Giants paying 7mm a year for his services. If they are able to get him locked up for 3.5-5mm a year, I'd be all over it. But I wouldn't pay him top 15 money.

Absolutely. If the Giants can lock him up to a longer term deal that would minimize his cap hit this year but maybe increase it in future years when we have more large salaries coming off the books and there will likely be cap increases leaguewide I would support it, but the cap hit on a one year deal is a bit prohibitive
If it's only guaranteed for injury
WillieYoung : 4/21/2014 10:03 am : link
it would be a mistake not to extend. th team could then have real negotiations on a long term deal after next season that is more in line with his performance in 2014. You are really making the performance decision next year.
Prince has been banged up at times..
Rsspro : 4/21/2014 10:29 am : link
but if it was my call.. I'd be working toward extending him real hard..

the guy is a very good CB against the run and pass.. and I think he's still getting better.. at his young age (24).. he'd be a guy I'd want to have around with DRC for the next 4 years..

$3.5 to $5.0 million/year to sign Prince?
Jimmy Googs : 4/21/2014 10:41 am : link
Not bloody likely in that range.

Maybe around $5M-$6M, but I cannot imagine he would sign for anything less. Unless i am missing what Cornerbacks get paid in the NFL.

I just can't see building or rebuilding a team by letting
Reese's Pieces : 4/21/2014 12:21 pm : link
three of your few recent successful high draft picks go (Joseph, Amukamura, Nicks), all still improving (except Nicks) and all with that Super Bowl ring that shows that they have been tested under fire.

The idea used to be to put together a nucleus of good young players to form the core of the team for a number of years.

And then they bring in journeyman cast-offs from other teams and sign them to one year contracts. Not just the Giants, but suddenly lots of teams have discovered the one year show-me contract.

I don't know. This may be what you have to do now. The league has changed so much since the salary cap.

I've seen a few people here write that they should tinker with the cap to give teams a cap discount for re-signing their own draftees or undrafted free agents who have never been with another team. I kind of like that idea.
