This is what I had asked about the other game when he got shelled and what his velocity was at. He seemed to loose MPH and location, both red flags that this was coming.
Now they need Pineda to continue stepping up and to stay healthy. Thankfully they have some depth and some young guys who can and should be able to step in and do a solid job.
But, here's a question: Does anyone know for sure that the ligament wasn't beginning to fray earlier in the season, as opposed to just popping yesterday? There have been games where his velocity was down, and games where his curve hasn't been biting.
Connective tissue can wear over time, rather than all at once. Could it be that his ligament was beginning to show damage earlier? I'm guessing it was. Even Saturday, he wasn't owning up to the injury until McCann notified the coaching staff--pretty common MLB behavior.

Bad break for the kid. He's a young guy and will almost certainly bounce back, but Nova looked like he was ready to take a step up last year.
Hopefully the second opinion finds a miracle.
