I know its wishful thinking that Evans is there at 12, and maybe even Yankey being there at #43, but this draft addresses every need that they have; with the exception of replacing Linval; but I still think they can add a DT (Kevin Williams), which gives them solid depth. With this draft I'm betting on them keeping 5 DE's and 4 DT's on the final 53. Have at it....
Round 1. Mike Evans, WR, Texas Tech.
The big long vertical threat that they've been missing. The intangible here, is that hopefully he's going to push Reuben Randle to be a better player, which is going to help the entire offense. This guy has huge upside....very similar player to Plaxico, but faster. Its no secret the Giants like him, and I wouldn't even be surprised to see them try to trade up to get him.
Round 2. David Yankey, G/T, Stanford.
Probably the best Guard in the draft. Most reports have him at that including Mayock. The Giants met with him at the Combine...which doesn't mean much, but how could they not like him? Big, strong, relatively athletic, highly intelligent with a strong work ethic. I think he can play guard or tackle and he immediately becomes a 10 year anchor when Snee leaves. Ideally a LG, which means Schwartz moves to RG eventually, but he also could be the answer at RT if Pugh eventually moves to LT.
Round 3. Tre Mason, RB, Auburn
I expect to catch flack for this one....but I just really like Mason. I think he's one of the top 2 RB's in this draft and he may not be here at Round 3. He needs work in pass protection like most RB's, but he's so physical, tough and a great insider runner. A true SEC talent, and with him Jennings and hopefully D. Wilson...it gives the Giants a possible 3 headed monster. I do also like LSU's Jeremy Hill. Anyone see his performance in the Bowl game?
Round 4. Arthur Lynch, TE, Georgia
Another SEC talent. See where I'm going here? (3 out of the 1st 4 picks). A better athlete than given credit for and will be mostly a blocker, but has the size 6'5 260lbs to be a seam threat with the right coaching (wish Pope was still here). Out of him, Larry Donnell, A. Robinson and Kellen Davis, someone has to emerge as a legitimate TE threat.
Round 5. Bryan Stork, C, Florida St.
He's all over the place in mocks...as high as Round 3 and as low as round 7. I know Syr '56 is not high on him....I am pretty high on him. To me his weaknesses can be developed and taught as its mostly physical deficiencies. Lower body strength is an issue and technique is an issue. He has great size (6'4 315 lbs), was the starting Center for the National Champion Seminoles and was good enough to be 1st team all ACC; so he has to be doing something right, in argueably the 2nd most competitive conference in football. He could push Walton or at the worst be a suitable backup for a couple of years and move into a starting role.
Round 5. Prince Shembo, DE/LB, Notre Dame.
I'll admit I never saw him play live...although have read alot on him and watched tape on him. He's as high energy on the field as it gets. This is our O'brien Schofield signing. Very very good pass rusher, although he needs more moves. High motor player who will bring great passion and energy to the defense. He also can cover a tight-end. I'm going to predict that he beats out Jacquian Williams for a roster spot. He's a bigger and better version of Williams who can actually rush the passer. Versatility is his strength and the Giants love versatility.
Round 6. Ben Gardener, DE, Stanford
Blue collar, high motor, tough, smart, good pass rusher.
Had an injury that has him dropping big in the draft. He could be there in Round 6. Still good enough to be 1st Team Pac 12 while only playing in 8 games??!! He'll have time to develop under JPP, Ayers, Kiwanuka and Moore. Who knows maybe he contributes due to injuries, but he'll be the 5th DE.
Then needs and value start matching up more easily in later rounds.
Liking the idea more and more of Donald at 12.
We have plenty of DEs and Lbs so you really don't have to select two DEs.
Use one of those picks on a DT and your good.
Evans is fine. I think a deep WR class might take the pressure off replacing Nicks in round one.
I don't think #5 lasts that long, and I'm likely even more confused after enjoying Easter w/e, but isnt #3 a smaller DW: speed, but with a little more power? I'd prefer Hill, if his personal life could turn around, if DW is OK, then you get the 3 headed monster and can really mix up the O plays.
I'd want that OL in #1, but again,if it fell that way, that means NYFG are Ok with current OL.
Btw I agree with your later comment that we can draft a DT in the later rounds
I think we will only be able to get a big body run stuffer at that point but that was essentially what Linval was anyway
Torrag... Couldn't agree more. Yankey is sliding everywhere except in the eyes of BBI. He could fall to the 4th round.
Also talking about this draft RB in the 3rd is something we can't afford. Good OL should be available and it will be tough to pass on one unless another positions slides to us. No way does Evans fall to pick 12.
