Previous draft bust that you really wanted in Blue

NYBEN : 4/21/2014 11:32 am
Who are some guys in previous drafts that you thought were going to be studs that you just knew the Giants would be crazy not to pick. But when it was all said and done the guy turned out to be a huge bust. Let's stick with 1st,2nd and 3rd round guys. To me any thing after the 3rd round should not be considered a bust.
My can't miss stud was Rolando McClain, I was furious when the Raiders took him at #8.I just knew this guy was the answer to our LBer problems. It would have been interesting to see what the Giants would have done if he was there when we picked. I think it still would have been JPP at which point I probably would have broke my TV.
a few I can remember

Erik Flowers - thought he would be a bookend pass rusher with Strahan. Um, no.

Reggie Nelson - thought the Eraser could become the best safety in football and was really, really pissed that they passed on him. I was wrong.

I really liked Dan Cody too.
John McCargo. eesh.

...
Aaron Gibson
Joey in VA : 4/21/2014 11:46 am : link
Akili Smith, Dan Footman (furious when they took Strahan with Footman on the board), and Daryl Gardner.
Yeah I wanted Rolando McClain too.
Jimmy Googs : 4/21/2014 11:46 am : link
I also really liked WR Michael Jenkins back in 2004 and was hoping he would drop to our early 2nd round pick, but Falcons picked him in Rd 1.

And I don't think Jenkins was a huge bust
Jimmy Googs : 4/21/2014 11:48 am : link
but he clearly disappointed.

Almost had a heart attack when the Eagles traded up to pluck this guy (right before the thought the Giants would draft this guy)...Giants were stuck with JPP as a consultation prize..
Oh yeah, Rolando McClain...
barens : 4/21/2014 11:57 am : link
I don't know what happened there. I mean, Saban had only great things to say about him, he played in an NFL style of defense, had the size, we(at least the fans) didn't hear anything about character concerns, only maybe a medical because of Crohn's disease, but the disaster that followed is pretty shocking. I will always wonder what the Giants thought of him, or if they would have drafted him before JPP if available.
Brandon Graham sounds very familiar to someone in this year's
BigBlueBuff : 4/21/2014 11:58 am : link
draft...

Anyway, I wanted Reggie Nelson in the worst way one year and thought that second round selection of Brian Robiskie would be the answer to our WR woes. Oops.
Jerome McDougle

the dude that we wanted right before willie jo.. the eagles grabbed him.. only memorable moment is him lighting up eli in his first pro game... i think we picked him up in 08 when Osi went down...

Dean Steinkuhler.

The Giants had to settle for some guy named Banks. They never could scout linebackers.
Derek Brown -TE -ND

Green ...could not believe the Giants passed him up for Ike Hilliard. "What the hell are they doing"?? "George Young has completely lost it ...we need speed on this team"

was one that I wanted badly after seeing in the east west shrine bowl.
I really wanted
Jay on the Island : 4/21/2014 4:40 pm : link
Robert Gallery in 2004 before I knew that the Eli trade was a legit possibility. Also I really liked WR Matt Jones.
One big
AnishPatel : 4/21/2014 5:06 pm : link
one wasn't a bust per say, but the team didn't get this players potential or longevity, and that's S. Taylor, in 2004. I thought he would be a special player for years. He had issues early on and turned his career around. He past away suddenly, but I thought he would be damn good for years and years to come.
I wanted Willie Middlebrooks in 2001 I think it was
Torrag : 4/21/2014 5:19 pm : link
We needed a DB and drafted Will Allen...Middlebrooks was taken by the Broncos a few picks later...was I pissed. I think he started 4 games in 5 years then out of the league. Oops.
Matt Jones and Adam Terry
Patrick77 : 4/21/2014 6:46 pm : link
I don't know why but I was sure both would be pro bowlers in the NFL.
Man I loved that Nebraska team with Steinkuhler
PatersonPlank : 4/21/2014 7:04 pm : link
One of the greatest offensive machines I have seen in college.
coby fleener is not a bust
Neverend : 4/21/2014 8:31 pm : link
but hes not as great as I thought he'd be. hes average. I fell in love with his long speed and how he came out of his breaks downfield but I ignored everything else about the guy

he had bad build up speed, he was a long strider and was bad at separating underneath. not the most sure handed and psychically imposing type of receiver either. He can make flash big plays downfield but he isn't the type that can hurt you after the catch in the underneath game (Since hes only fast once he gets his full stride going) and can not consistently make plays on every level of the field.

I thought he was going to be a top 5 tight end. I fought like hell for him and lavonte david in 2012 around here. I missed badly there
I wanted Gallery
Wuphat : 4/21/2014 8:38 pm : link
Glad I was wrong on that one

Oooooooh, Matt Jones, BBI legend.
I would've been extremely pleased with one of Eli, Larry Fitzgerald,
Shockeyisthebest80 : 4/22/2014 1:12 am : link
or ROBERT GALLERY in 2004. I was certain all three would be stars. Giants lucked out there.
Honestly, I think a lot of these busts wouldn't have been busts
Dhoe20 : 4/22/2014 2:59 am : link
if we had them. Development from the team is key, that's why I hope Manziel doesn't go to the Jags or Browns.
Reggie Nelson
KWALL : 4/22/2014 2:25 pm : link
is a draft bust?

He's been a starter in the NFL since his rookie year. The last few seasons he's made plenty of impact plays on a very good Bengal D.

JAX blew it by letting him go too early. He's proven them wrong. Nelson is not a draft bust.

I wanted the Giants to draft Charles Alexander or Steve Fuller (based on the NY Press) instead we took Phil Simms.
Robert Gallery
Matt M. : 4/22/2014 3:45 pm : link
2 Giants busts who i thought were going to be good were Kanavis McGhee and Derek Brown.
