Shocking retirement news - Rolando McClain says "I'm Done"

YAJ2112 : 4/21/2014 1:23 pm
Quote:
McClain told Seth Wickersham of ESPN.com that he was walking away from football, this time for good, saying “I’m done.”

“If football made me complete I would play,” McClain said. “But whenever I think of it my heart pulls me away from whatever reason.”

This guy

had a huge following here on BBI like Donald does. We dodged a bullet there. I guess you never know.
TMS, I can name ten players who have a

large following for a potential round one pick by the Giants, but don't feel like it. McClain has nothing to do with Donald.
It's just more proof that fans should shut up
kmed : 4/21/2014 1:45 pm : link
about throwing remotes and peddling their agendas on who we have to pick. We, as fans, just aren't privvy to enough information about a player that teams are. It goes so far beyond production during college and stupid combine stats. It's just as important to try and get into the heads of these players and do extensive background checks in regards to how they work.

In conclusion, shut the eff up about who we have to pick because you don't know diddly. Thanks.
The Giants
MookGiants : 4/21/2014 1:47 pm : link
never had the opportunity to pick him, otherwise they may have.

The Giants apparently really liked McClain and Spiller, but both went before the Giants pick
.

I wanted the Giants to take him. Thankfully they weren't able to.
I think Favre still leads

A lot of teams like McClain

Does his career end the same way on a team with more regimen than it did on the Raiders? We'll never know. Teams like players for their potential, but no matter how good they are at drafting they can't predict the future.

I don't get the connection. The guy was a top 10 draft pick. The Giants were supposedly high on him, too. I don't think anyone could have seen this coming in in 2010, not the fans, the teams that scouted him, or even Rolando McClain.

FYI he retired from the Ravens, they seem like a pretty regimented team to me

Should have guessed that

when he did only 1 of several parts of the Ravens tryout.

He gave it a shot, but like he basically says, his hearts not in it.
An athlete with no 'heart' is less than a JAG.

He's never played a down for the Ravens. In fact, I don't think he's ever stepped foot on the field as a Raven, even in a practice. His career trajectory was already headed downhill by the time he signed with them.
Seems he is a little bit troubled

I hope this is the first step in getting things straight mentally. I never viewed him as a bad guy.
For him, I think, giving it another "shot"

was the best thing for him emotionally. It appears to have reaffirmed his initial decision and so he no longer has to wonder if he made the right decision or not..

Didn't he do it because his son missed watching him play football.

He walked away from millions of dollars and he'll have to live with that. I don't blame the guy for being honest.

He was signed by the Ravens a year ago, then a few weeks later retired. This time he tried once more and finally re-retired. I wish him luck and hope he can live guilt free with his decision.

I don't know if an aborted second attempt at his age (still well within his prime) is necessarily closure. It'd be different if he at least made it through camp and stuck to the roster.

I always thought he was overrated
Neverend : 4/21/2014 3:48 pm : link
He didn't have the most fluid hips, which is expected given his size, but I thought his instincts were somewhat overrated. He was really good at diagnosing plays from time to time but there were instances of him also overpursuing or just getting lost in the trash. And for a guy as big and long as he was, he seemed to struggle with blockers.

I don't think its a slam dunk that the giants would have taken him. I remember mike garafolo reporting that the feelings on mcclain were mixed in the organization. He was a polarizing prospect just on film alone. I don't think anyone could have imagined he had the mental issues he has. Everyone gushed about his film study habits. ESPN even did a piece on him not too long before the draft. Pretty sad
Thank god the Raiders drafted this clown before
ZogZerg : 4/21/2014 4:55 pm : link
we had a shot at him. What a bum.
what's difficult to remember
fkap : 4/21/2014 5:08 pm : link
is that these kids spend their entire lives prepping for high school ball, then college ball, then the NFL. It's rarely a case of having fun playing HS, then maybe serious college.
They have to work at it (even the naturally gifted ones), day and night, night and day, giving up any sort of normal high school/college experience, ruining their bodies the entire time. Try not to judge too harshly as you (at best) do a couple hours a week of gym workout, or (as normal) sit at the computer with a bag of Doritos.

Well said.
He went through a lot off the field...
PeterS : 4/21/2014 7:02 pm : link
family and friends demanding money from him. He's basically been on his own since he was 15. Mother, later diagnosed with bipolar disorder, tried to kill him with a knife. He divorced at age 23. He struggles with anger management issues and perhaps the NFL is not the best line of work for him.

I wish him all the best.
