NFT: Android Smartphone decision: HTC One M8 vs. Galaxy S5

Don in DC : 4/21/2014 5:51 pm
I am due for an upgrade from my current Galaxy S3, and am trying to decide which of these two phones I want to pick up.

I have liked HTC phones' interfaces better in the past than that of the Galaxy, though the Galaxy S3 improved dramatically over the past year with software updates.

That said, I found the HTC EVO 4G LTE to be very buggy and prone to glitches and crashes, and eventually ditched it for the Galaxy S3, even though I likes the EVO's interface better.

If you're in the market and getting one or the other, or have already gotten one or the other, please share your thoughts. Thanks.

I absolutely LOVE my LG G2 (have had it since october)

No micro SD card. That's pretty much a disqualifier for me.
NY Times compares Galaxy S5 with HTC One (M8)...

HTC One wins (although it usually comes down to personal preference)...

It's an awesome phone. It sure beats the iPhone 4s I used to have which was a primitive relic in comparison.

Galaxy S5 over HTC One M8

Slightly biased as the owner of a Galaxy S3 that meets most of my needs but the difference maker is the long term survivability. The S5 is supposed to be dustproof and waterproof. Check out reviews to assess those features because those are difference makers.
The two things keeping the S5 in the running for me
Don in DC : 4/21/2014 7:04 pm : link
are the superior camera and the water resistance. The One seems to have the edge in nearly every other respect.

However, those two points are huge.
Don, thanks for starting this thread

I'm in the same spot you are - I have an upgrade for my S3.
I've read all about both phones. I really like the look and feel of the M8 and wanted to upgrade to that phone badly. However, after seeing picture comparisons between the S5 and M8, the quality of the S5 is so much better that I think I have to go in that direction. I'm ticked that HTC stuck with the 4 mega pixel camera.

The bottom line is, both phones look to be great phones. I don't think you can go wrong with either one. However, I have kids and taking pictures is a huge part of my life. There are so many times when all I have is my phone. I told myself that the camera is the most important part of the smart phone, so right now I am planning to go with the S5. Again, I really wanted the M8, but the photos weren't even close to what I saw with the S5.

Yeah, that may be how I end up going as well. The camera is a huge factor for me as well, having young kids as well. Too bad the M8 is better in nearly every other regard...
I have the s5

Just switched from the iPhone 5. I love the s5.
if pictures are a big deal, then take them with a DSLR camera
SHO'NUFF : 4/21/2014 8:00 pm : link
the camera comparison wasn't that huge of a difference, especially with HTC's dual-camera. It's not very high up on my list of demands, honestly. I do like the front facing speakers on the HTC, but the S5 is water-tight. You can't go wrong with either one, really.
Sony Z2 over either, but that's not here yet, unfortunately.

By then, Maybe the LG G3 will be coming around. Rumored quad hd screen.

Been waiting on this myself. So far M8>S5 from hands on if you gotta to now.
DSLR?

They said the camera was important. I'd think a Panaflex is the way to go.

Or a 16MB camera you're already carrying around would work great.

Nope. Zero.
How's the battery life on the S5
terz22 : 4/22/2014 12:09 am : link
Love my S3 but battery life has been real shit lately and can't seem to figure it out.
Samsung improved the battery life significantly since the S3

I vote LG for androids though. I'd wait it out until their new model if you can.
I have the M7...

You are not going to be blowing up your pictures and creating posters out of them, but its not a bad camera if you're just snapping shots. I was coming off the Samsung Galaxy Nexus (basically the phone that came between the SII and SIII) and the M7's camera got me much better results.

I still don't think I would ever rely upon a cell phone to be the main camera for taking shots of kids or important events. I can see having something you can shoot an impromptu moment, but even an entry-level priced Canon will do laps around what's included in your phone. Plus you don't look like an idiot when you're at a wedding and holding up your phone (or worse...an iPad).

Its possible that having a dedicated camera makes me prioritize things much differently than yourself, but taking decent photos vs. relatively good photos never really was a deal breaker for me.

I'm not sure which one I'd upgrade to of the two as they are both good phones, but I really don't like Samsung's new "cheap plastic that looks like leather" design. Its looks like a band-aid more than perforated leather. Its especially bad in their new tablets, which quickly ended my debate of picking one up vs. an iPad.

That's a very minor detail, but I do enjoy the sound quality of my M7's speakers, strong battery life, construction (it feels like you're holding a piece of technology vs. cheap plastic), a screen that produces true colors vs. Samsung's super saturated palette (which I hated on my Galaxy Nexus) and much better radio/reception in fringe areas (though that may be specific to a Galaxy Nexus vs. an M7).
I am never going to be a guy who carries around a camera.
Don in DC : 4/22/2014 11:23 am : link
Having a good camera on my phone allows me to take pictures, which I typically upload for friends and family to see.

So, my phone really is and will remain my primary (indeed, only) camera. So it's important that it fulfill this role well.

For people who have and use a regular camera, I understand this would be a lesser (or even non-existent) priority. But for me, it's important.

And that's why I will probably end up getting the S5.
I have a nice camera
ZogZerg : 4/22/2014 12:39 pm : link
However, I don't drag it with me every day. Life is busy, there are plenty times when we are out with family and friends when you want to get some nice pictures, but don't have the "nice camera". Certainly, for graduations and huge planned events, then the nice camera comes along. But, those are the minority of the pictures I end up capturing. Even on vacation, who wants to drag along some big camera all day? Especially when you can get great outside shots with a cell phone?

I agree that the M8 is a much nicer looking phone. But, then I think, don't most people put cases on their phones? Folks end up "hiding" their good looking phone anyway.
I thought the S5
AnishPatel : 4/22/2014 3:05 pm : link
would be better. I didn't really know about the M8 being good until this thread. So I read the reviews and a lot of people like the M8 over the S5. I had my eyes set on the S5, but I guess I will have to re-think that.

For the people that have the M8, what is the best feature or features that make you guys love the phone?
