NFT: My Deadliest Catch book came out

BurlyMan : 4/22/2014 9:52 am
With the premiere of Season 10 of Deadliest Catch tonight, I thought I'd let you guys know about the book I wrote with Captain Scott Campbell Jr of the Seabrooke that came our earlier this month.

It was interesting to work with Junior, especially when Season 9 started and he was portrayed as a villain and the commentariat of the DC Facebook page and DC forums turned on him. I found him to be a guy who has experienced the ups and downs of commercial fishing and doesn't get too high on himself. And he has some crazy stories!

If you're a fan of the show, or know someone who is, please consider checking it out.

Might have to pick myself up a copy, I can read anything written about deep sea/commercial fishing.

Did you get a chance to go out on the boat at all?

I went up to Dutch Harbor and spent a long weekend on the boat while it was in for repairs but wasn't able to go out. We tried, but couldn't make it work with our schedules, for which I'm grateful. It's something I really wanted to do/really didn't want to do if that makes sense. I'm a Navy vet and rode out a monsoon on a frigate -- but that's NOTHING like the weather these guys face on the regular. The Seabrooke is just under 100 feet long and I'm pretty sure I would have been miserable the entire time. Still there's a part of me that really wants to know if I could hack it even though I'm fairly certain the answer is "no."

...a nice interview with Sig here, and not just about his daughter being on his crew this season (although there's no way I'd want my daughter surrounded by all of those seamen...badum bum).

As far as I know Sig's daughter was only on the boat for a few weeks while the cameras were rolling. She's not a year-round crab fisherman (fisherperson?) but she may be involved in less intense fisheries.

Junior doesn't like him. We did an event in San Diego and he told a crowd of people that if Elliot was in trouble he'd help him but otherwise he's not a fan.

Yeah, I saw that Sig points out that she does spend some time on salmon boats. Still...rugged for the ladies. In your time with Junior, had you ever encountered any other female crew members on any crab runs? Just seems like a brutal environment, from the climate as well as crew interaction perspectives.

I have speculated that after crab season they switch to another species. What does Junior fish for after the crab season the rest of the year?
I would imagine it would be incredibly tough for a woman

working in any fishery in Alaska. It's such a male dominated industry. That said most crab fishermen do salmon tendering during the summer. They don't actually fish for the salmon but serve as floating refrigeration units for the salmon fleet and then bring the fish into the processors. It's very easy work and many crabbers bring their families on the boat during salmon season because its one of the few times when they can all be together for an extended period of time.

The Seabrooke is heavily involved in the cod fisheries, which is way more intense than crab fishing. When you catch cod you have to kill them so they bleed out in the hold. Very messy. Then, once you put your first cod in the tank, you've got 72 hours to fill up or else the processor won't take the fish. So those three days are intense, more of a derby style of fishing than today's quota system (though there are limits on the amount of cod you can catch). There's a chapter in my book called The Codfathers on how the Seabrooke was part of a handful of crab boats that made cod fishing profitable.
Congrats, man. That's awesome!

but why can't they ice the Cod?

I'm not really sure but I'm guessing it has to come in and leave the processor "fresh" for it to be considered fresh, even if its immediately frozen afterward. With crab it's a live product.
