NFT: Diaper parties- tacky?

MookGiants : 4/22/2014 1:49 pm
One of my friends married my step sister and he is having a "diaper party" on Saturday and invited me. I've never even heard of this but after googling seems like some people have them. I think it's pretty tacky to do, buy your own frickin diapers. It's at a bar but its not open bar or anything, so I'm bringing a pack of diapers and then paying for everything I eat/drink too. I havent decided if I'm going yet but he keeps asking if I am.

What do you guys think?

I'd be fine with it if the cheap bastard was paying for the open bar. And it's at a bar of someone he knows so I'm sure he could have got a nice deal for an open bar for a couple hours

That's the difference. It's not like a shower, which is a gift grab but there's free food and drink. This cat wants free shit and he wants you all to pay for it. Fuck him.

It's all men and your step brother is hosting it? A fucking diaper party? He actually agreed to this? He needs to have a find my nutsack in my wife's pocketbook scavenger hunt party.

You are looking at this backwards

He gets a guilt free night of boozing and gambling and all he has to do is collect some diapers from his buddies

If his wife has a problem with him hanging out with friends to the point that he needs to have a diaper party to avoid guilt then maybe he married the wrong woman.
Wait, Mook...they already had a baby shower?
Matt M. : 4/22/2014 2:14 pm : link
Then, yes, this is even more tacky than the initial concept of a diaper party. A shower is one thing. To invite people to buy diapers and pay for their own food and drink is just obnoxious to me.

is a pain in the ass but he can pretty much go out whenever he wants. Now when the kid comes it will be different but he's out pretty regularly

Right. But if he's paying for booze and food and you guys are reciprocating with diapers why not just have everybody hang the Fuck out without the diapers and bullshit. It sounds like something a woman would come up with and a man with both balls in her purse would agree to. Just awful.

but I am assuming that it's for people that don't have a lot of money. If I was presented with this invitation and I knew the parents needed help, specifically family, I would probably just buy them a box of diapers and not go to some stupid party(unless I wanted to go drink at a bar).

They aren't rich but they are comfortable and both work and make decent enough money, especially for where we live. If they didn't have a pot to piss in I would do whatever I could for them, but thats not the case.

I asked another friend if he's going and he said he reluctantly is but that apparently they have a deal with the bar where everything is cheaper but we still have to pay. Still bullshit, pay for the open bar or dont have something like this at all.

Ok, then I'm not understanding the purpose of this. They have money to pay for things they need, yet they are having a party for things they need and not paying for said party? That's a large "hell no" on going to this one. Not only is it a hell no, I would make it clear to this fellow that he needs his man card taken away.

and one of my coworkers had to pick up a check from an account at night. The bar manager warned him that there would be a diaper party going on when he came to pick up the check.
My coworker paid no attention to the warning since he never heard of one before.
Ends up there were about 200 men (it was a gay club) only wearing diapers.

That's what popped in to my head when you said diaper party lol.

Sure is. That's the only diaper party that I've ever heard of. Although from what I understand it isn't limited to gay men. There's a diaper/adult baby kink that some folks are into. (totally not my thing, but fascinating nonetheless)

Baby showers were for women only. I know of Jack/Jill showers but I've informed my wife that I have no interest in ever attending a baby shower. I'm happy to help Dad finish the nursery or with anything else needed to get ready but I'm adamant about baby showers.
Mook
Matt M. : 4/22/2014 2:25 pm : link
The notion that they are not in need makes this even more obnoxious. A shower is perfectly acceptable for any lot in life. It is sometimes for need and sometimes to help the couple with the convenience of not having to go out and get everything they need to get started. Either way, it is a common party and generally well received by friends and family. This particular party for this particular couple seems to be nothing more than selfish, self centered, and cheap.
more and more
B in ALB : 4/22/2014 2:25 pm : link
I see this shit with friends and acquaintances - special little parties for their special little veal medallions. It's nauseating. People have been having children for thousands of years yet many feel the need to blow the whole fucking thing out of proportion. I don't care about your ugly kids on Facebook and I don't care about your e-vite that you just emailed me for free. Send me a proper invitation and I'll consider. Actually I'll find a way out of attending after all so don't bother.

Now this? Diaper party hosted by a man who won't pay for anything? Who does he think he is? Frankie Valle or some kinda big shot?

but don't really have a problem with it, depending on the friend.

If it's a casual acquaintance I wouldn't be going no matter what - but would send a small bag of diapers with my decline RSVP. If it's a real friend I'd do whatever - just nice to have some time together because you know if he's starting a family (or adding to it) you really aren't going to get that kind of time together anymore.

You kind of learn as you age that your most valuable asset is your time, and that you want to spend it with your friends and family, not just with coworkers or trying to do things for yourself. So that's how you should approach this invitation, imo.
i had a baby last year
Les in TO : 4/22/2014 2:53 pm : link
there were two baby showers for my wife - one by her mom which i was not expected to make an appearance at, so hung out with my dad and brother in law, and one surprise one through her work, where I was invited by her boss and was part of the surprise. we also had a "welcome party" after the baby was born thrown by my parents, because they are conservative Jews and tradition/superstition frowns on baby showers + we didn't have a tradiitonal baby naming ceremony (and my parents wanted "payback" for all the gifts given to their friends kids from all thebrises/baby naming parties)

i did not have a diaper party which i think is tacky and obnoxious. my close friends dropped by to visit shortly after my girl was born and they all brought little sleepers, onesies, etc. when i broke the news that my wife was expecting while we were out for dinner and drinks, they bought a few rounds of shots, which was not necessary, but contributed to a very fun night out.
I've heard of them
Andy in Halifax : 4/22/2014 2:54 pm : link
It's a way to help out young parents with the additional cost.

HOWEVER, a few things wrong with this one:

1. It should not be organized by the parents, that does make it tacky.
2. It's a girl thing. Tell this dude to grow some balls.
3. It's usually at a house and the host will supply snacks & drinks. Having it out is too much burden on the guests.

Your friend has botched this whole thing.
my friend did it.

diaper parties belong in the same category as the dadchelor parties (one crazy trip/night out before baby arrives); a thinly veiled excuse to get Will Hilld with your friends .

I had never heard of them either...the first time father to be is throwing it (at his wife's urging)...she has had two showers (work and family) and will soon have a third (friends)...he is supplying the beer and burgers, brats, etc...

I have no problem with it...it's a helluva lot better than being invited to a couple's shower...

I am bringing baby diapers, Depends and one of these -

This kind of shit pisses me off
jcn56 : 4/22/2014 3:17 pm : link
but it happens all the time. Diaper party, Pampered Chef or Tupperware party, etc. It seems like every other week my wife is off to separate me from my hard earned money to some dipshit friend of hers who came up with new and unique ways to 'make money'.

What pisses me off the most is it's basically a revenue generator for someone else in addition to them making a little bit of money. Going out to a bar and having a diaper party? Do the shit at home at least, buy plenty of cheap beer, and promise some sort of return to the attendees. Nope, restaurant/bar gets some good business, he gets a bunch of free diapers, and you get to spend your evening with some cheap fuck.
It's totally...
Chris in Philly : 4/22/2014 3:18 pm : link
different if the dude is supplying booze and food. It's another thing to say, "Hey, let's all meet at the corner bar and you bring me free shit."

I think you're safe, man. You're providing everything for the guests...that's the key difference with Mook's situation.

But when your wife has her own party, make sure she doesn't forget Brett's invitation since it'll be a party for those with vaginas.

My brother and SIL had their act together, diaper & shower-wise
schnitzie : 4/22/2014 6:42 pm : link
They got reusable cloth diapers and covers, so desisted from packing our landfills with more loaded, non-bio-degradable baby diapers.

They listed the reusable cloth diapers and covers on their registry for the Baby Shower. I liked the eco-friendly idea so much, I was happy to buy a bunch of the reusables for them in various sizes.

I don't think SIL had a second shower at work...she had a Jack & Jill, a few gifts were brought in person, most were delivered directly to their home, via the registry.

The other cool thing was that they were very down to earth about gifts. One friend who had already had a baby sent a bunch of her baby supplies, hand-me-downs, clean, folded and crisp. I'm sure they had sentimental value for SIL to use the same supplies that her good friend used for her own children.

Finally, my SIL reports that the reusable diapers and covers are much less prone to leak. The diapers and covers are attractive, too. The covers are in lovely colors, and look like clothing. They are a vastly superior product to the disposables both functionally, aesthetically, economically and environmentally. Disposables cost a ton, too!

steve in ky : 4/22/2014 7:02 pm : link
We used cloth diapers for both of our children. Another big benefit is that they are much more comfortable for the babies especially so since they really reduce the chance of diaper rash.

Saves a lot of money as well!
