tonight on MLB Network. Interested to get a first live look at Tanaka, should be a good matchup as Lester has had a very strong start to the season.
bite your tongue Phil!

The increasing likelihood of that scenario is going to bother the hell out of me the longer he goes without a contract extension.
Ichiro gets the nod over Gardy in the OF

Ichiro is having better than expected season so far, and he's hit Lester well in his career
I'm gonna go out on a limb

I'll also go out on another limb and predict that spring will be followed by summer.

Over/under on number of fastballs that hit Jeter on the hand this series has to be 2

anyone have a guess at why Carlos Gomez has lost his mind?
given that a few guys on the Pirates
WeatherMan : 4/22/2014 5:57 pm : link
had been doing the same thing in games prior and the Brewers let it slide, then a rookie calls out Gomez (who is known to be, well, volatile) for the same thing even after he hauled ass and got to 3rd clean on the play... dude blew his stack. The real asshole in the fracas was the backup catcher, straight up sucker punched a guy in the face.
i'm wondering
RasputinPrime : 4/22/2014 6:02 pm : link
whether the additional 20 or so pounds of muscle Gomez has added have anything to do with his volatile personality. He went from being a speedster with no pop to a legit 5 tool talent.

that's no shock, at least IMO.

So if Nuno is the #5, Tanaka must be the #1, since we are Tanaka-Pineda-CC-Kuroda-Nuno at the moment. :-)

sinctybldh : 4/22/2014 6:26 pm : link
has anyone seen what Kevin Towers has done to the Arizona Diamondbacks? That team was an up and coming team before he took over. It is amazing the amount of talent he has given away as a general manager of the Dbacks. He traded Justin Upton, Jarrod Parker, Trevor Bauer, Eaton, Skaggs, and Davidson. Their system isn't very good either. I wonder how he manages to keep his job. The team looks horrible this season with a very poor immediate future.
This is a big game
PaulN : 4/22/2014 6:31 pm : link
On a few levels, but the biggest is how will Tanaka match up against the Red Sox, plus, can he then match up against Lester, the Yankee killer. It is always a huge series when the Yanks play the Red Sox. But the other thing is Ellsbury's return to Fenway, how will he do against his former team, we know how the fans will react to him, can he use it to motivate himself.
If Tanaka goes out tonight
RasputinPrime : 4/22/2014 6:34 pm : link
and takes them down there is going to be an explosion of Tanakadom.

Now to try to finish work so I can enjoy the fireworks...
I hope they give Ellsbury a good cheer at introductions
WeatherMan : 4/22/2014 6:35 pm : link
he was a big part in winning two titles. If he does anything at the dish though, then give him what for.
big start for Tanaka
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 4/22/2014 6:42 pm : link
would love another 7+ IP 2 ER 8 K type of start.

He is eventually going to get lit up, I'd hate it if the first time came in Fenway.

in the speed/power combo. But yeah, the lack of patience is really limiting. For O'Brien too, but with his power it may be forgivable.
tight zone
WeatherMan : 4/22/2014 7:49 pm : link
and he walked em loaded, this is going to get ugly
i am not a fan of players
sinctybldh : 4/22/2014 7:49 pm : link
that have a combination of not waling and k'ing too much. to me those aren't yankee type players. i would rather field a team of all bernie williams in his prime then players like o'brien.
those were both balls
MookGiants : 4/22/2014 7:49 pm : link
but he has been calling them strikes most of the game so far. That's probably what annoys Lester, the 2-2 pitch was a strike a few other times
Lester looks like
RasputinPrime : 4/22/2014 7:50 pm : link
Jeter just took a dump in his mouth.

It's called a strike zone John. Unlike the Yankees universe, it is not infinite.

the worst strike zones are the inconsistent ones
WeatherMan : 4/22/2014 7:52 pm : link
I've got no problem with calling it tight, but when four pitches are to the same spot and two are balls and two are strikes that's shit.
Lester
MookGiants : 4/22/2014 7:52 pm : link
also got a couple of those before that AB. Both guys were getting a wide zone until the Jeter AB
sin
Dunedin81 : 4/22/2014 7:54 pm : link
O'Brien isn't really a free-swinger, he does take walks and he works counts. Just not as many walks as you'd like. He's also not a dead pull hitter, he has power to all fields so he should post a respectable BA. If you can get a .280/.340/.450-.500 line out of the guy you'd absolutely take it.
if he can do that in the majors that is fine
sinctybldh : 4/22/2014 7:57 pm : link
just not sure he will do as well as what u just posted. i think i would be surprised if he did.
O'Brien
Phil in LA : 4/22/2014 7:59 pm : link
will probably refine a bit more. The beginning of the year has been wort of a heat check for him.
I have no problem
RasputinPrime : 4/22/2014 7:59 pm : link

Another gem of an outing. Really turning it around.
nice home cooking on the call
RasputinPrime : 4/22/2014 8:54 pm : link
to give Lester an unearned run.
Couple nice pokes by Roberts so far
mfsd : 4/22/2014 8:55 pm : link
tonight, nice to see
nice on DePaula
RasputinPrime : 4/22/2014 8:56 pm : link
any word on the ETA for Ramirez or Burawa?
This just in
mfsd : 4/22/2014 8:57 pm : link
Ellsbury is good at baseball.
and that's why you don't leave him in
WeatherMan : 4/22/2014 8:57 pm : link
DAMMIT.
Great stuff...
Dunedin81 : 4/22/2014 8:57 pm : link
Farrell left him out a batter too long though, especially if you look at what happened to Chris Sale.
Ellsbury's been worth every penny thus far
NYerInMA : 4/22/2014 8:57 pm : link
Good night Lester!
Ellsbury with the two run double
RasputinPrime : 4/22/2014 8:57 pm : link
*DANCE OF TOTAL JOY*

This has to be one of the best games we've had against Lester.

7-2
I am soooooooo glad the Yanks have Ellsbury
Stan from LA : 4/22/2014 8:58 pm : link
And the Sox don't.

What a player!
Farrell abused our future #3
Phil in LA : 4/22/2014 8:58 pm : link
not cool. Nice answer for the Yanks, though.
Ramirez pitched in EST recently...
Dunedin81 : 4/22/2014 8:59 pm : link
so probably relatively soon. Burawa is dealing with an oblique issue as well but will probably take awhile.
JACOBY!
Dave in Hoboken : 4/22/2014 8:59 pm : link
(Damn, it appears I'm on delay by a minute or two)
The offense this year
Matt M. : 4/22/2014 9:01 pm : link
is about as balanced as it's been in a decade. Nice split of L, R, and S, regardless of who plays. Nice split of power and OBA. And Girardi is doing a great job resting guys/ keeping the bench fresh. I truly think this will be a special team.
Bryan Mitchell with another solid outing...

Phil - you better be kidding
RasputinPrime : 4/22/2014 9:01 pm : link
Lester should sign with the Dodgers. You know he isn't going to resign with the Sox. They don't believe in overpaying for talent and he is going to get paid.

Cap with a Jeterian Blast!

8-2
8-2.
WeatherMan : 4/22/2014 9:03 pm : link
after the back to back home runs that inning was Lucy pulling the football away. Good grief.
They should try to get Mitchell
Phil in LA : 4/22/2014 9:03 pm : link
ready by July or August.
It'll be Lester or
Phil in LA : 4/22/2014 9:04 pm : link
Scherzer or both next offseason.
i'd rather we sign Tanaka Jr. next year
RasputinPrime : 4/22/2014 9:06 pm : link
no more 30+ year olds with arms holding out for one last payday.
I wouldn't
MookGiants : 4/22/2014 9:09 pm : link
even consider Lester.

Scherzer I wouldn't want either. 30+ year olds long term deals as pitchers is not smart business.

Nice quick inning for knuckles
RasputinPrime : 4/22/2014 9:10 pm : link
settle in young man and get through 7 easy.
What I don't like about the back to backs
Phil in LA : 4/22/2014 9:11 pm : link
was he did not get beat on his best pitch. McCann should have been calling more splits.
Is Maeda
Phil in LA : 4/22/2014 9:12 pm : link
Tanaka junior? I was hearing he wasn't.
I was flipping over to the Ranger game
mfsd : 4/22/2014 9:12 pm : link
but it looked like Tanaka tried to cruise with all fastballs once he got a lead

Hopefully he's learned his lesson that you can't do that against the Sox at Fenway
both Darvish and now Tanaka
RasputinPrime : 4/22/2014 9:13 pm : link
throw at least 4-5 pitches almost evenly. It's beautiful to watch. That said, you do need to know what your money pitches are on any given night.

With Ortiz you throw the pitch that reminds him the least of cake.
I think he does what
Phil in LA : 4/22/2014 9:13 pm : link
McCann calls for.

Same goes for McCann of course coming from he NL, he's not used to calling a Fenway game

the second HR looked like a hanging pitch to me whatever the call
Del Shofner : 4/22/2014 9:18 pm : link
was from McCann. But I get the point. That said, it's April and these guys are playing together for the first time at Fenway.
not Maeda
RasputinPrime : 4/22/2014 9:21 pm : link
just whomever is closest to fitting the Tanaka profile: mid-twenties, bulldog approach to pitching and ready for the big lights of NYC.
RP
Phil in LA : 4/22/2014 9:23 pm : link
you'd have to invent him then, since Maeda is next up.
doesn't have to be from Japan
RasputinPrime : 4/22/2014 9:27 pm : link
another bad fastball high.
Beat again
Phil in LA : 4/22/2014 9:27 pm : link
on not his best two strike pitch.
great split
RasputinPrime : 4/22/2014 9:30 pm : link
he sure doesn't overthrow it though.
Some great splitters
mfsd : 4/22/2014 9:30 pm : link
off Gomes right there

That's a strong 7 from Tanaka, and not even to 90 pitches yet
That was the
Phil in LA : 4/22/2014 9:31 pm : link
6th inning.
Yup
mfsd : 4/22/2014 9:31 pm : link
my bad
i'll take your word on the 7 strong
RasputinPrime : 4/22/2014 9:32 pm : link
and hope you are right.
terrible game for Solarte at the plate
RasputinPrime : 4/22/2014 9:33 pm : link
he needs to turn that frown upside down!
Ichiro is raking
RasputinPrime : 4/22/2014 9:34 pm : link
he looks twice as good as last season both at the plate and in the field. I guess old guys play better with rest. Go figure.
Holt is going to play for the Sox for a long time
RasputinPrime : 4/22/2014 9:46 pm : link
he looks like a little shitburger. Fits like a glove.

Nice 7 for Tanaka.
hope Teix didn't hurt himself tagging not-Ellsbury
RasputinPrime : 4/22/2014 9:48 pm : link
he sure looked afraid when he reached out.
Hit 95 with the 4 seamer
Phil in LA : 4/22/2014 9:49 pm : link
in the 7th. Nice sign.
Beltran goes deep!
Dave in Hoboken : 4/22/2014 9:52 pm : link
9-2.
That was a bomb by
mfsd : 4/22/2014 9:52 pm : link
Beltran!
Save something for tomorrow
Dunedin81 : 4/22/2014 9:52 pm : link
!
Beltran
RasputinPrime : 4/22/2014 9:53 pm : link
man did he crush that one.

9-2

Makes me cry to think what he'd have been with us all these years. How many intelligent sports writers have gone on record as saying he is one of the best talents they've ever seen. How did someone not lock him down (KC, HOU, NYM, STL)?

lets get through here quickly.

Betances cued up for the no leverage innings.
and here comes
MookGiants : 4/22/2014 10:00 pm : link
the guy who can only pitch in a blowout!
well Tanaka is the best 4th starter
RasputinPrime : 4/22/2014 10:01 pm : link
in baseball.

Betances ready for 1.2 innings.
Tanaka did really well
dpinzow : 4/22/2014 10:01 pm : link
aside from the two solo shots in the 4th from Ortiz and Napoli...gave them almost nothing

2 BBs, 35 Ks in 4 starts (unreal)
how is this guy
WeatherMan : 4/22/2014 10:05 pm : link
the garbage time pitcher in your pen? He's got nasty stuff.
Dellin representing the Parade Ground in Brooklyn

Girardi has a man crush on David Phelps.
Good thing
MookGiants : 4/22/2014 10:06 pm : link
he's showing this stuff in a 7 run game. But don't worry, first sign of trouble tomorrow night and David Phelps will be there to save the day!
Ortiz fouled it off
RasputinPrime : 4/22/2014 10:06 pm : link
his paw. He'll feel that.

Betances K's PEDroia and Shrek.

That hook is nasty.
Betances
MookGiants : 4/22/2014 10:08 pm : link
8.2 innings, 1 hit, 6 walks, 16 strikeouts.

Someone please defend how Girardi is handling him, would love to hear it
Betances
Phil in LA : 4/22/2014 10:08 pm : link
will emerge as the 8th inning guy in the next few months. Girardi hates it when young relievers walk anyone.
wow - McCann going the other
Del Shofner : 4/22/2014 10:11 pm : link
way tonight.
Betances is striking out too many hitters
RasputinPrime : 4/22/2014 10:12 pm : link
and not giving up enough walks. That has hurt the feelings of many other members of the pen. He's being punished for it.

McCann with another Fenway single. That is three oppo hits. He is locked in.

agree with both points.
forget the 8th inning guy
WeatherMan : 4/22/2014 10:13 pm : link
that's future closer level stuff.
He's coming on at age 26
Phil in LA : 4/22/2014 10:15 pm : link
just as Mo did.
If Girardi
MookGiants : 4/22/2014 10:15 pm : link
hates young pitchers walking people then he would not have put Robertson anywhere near high leverage situations for a while.
I think Girardi's earned the benefit of the doubt with the pen
Greg from LI : 4/22/2014 10:15 pm : link
I'd like to see Betances in higher leverage situations too, but they're easing him into them. I'll be patient for now.
he did "bench" Robertson
RasputinPrime : 4/22/2014 10:18 pm : link
for the better part of how many months? Years? It still seems like he isn't 100% behind Robertson.
Dean Anna sighting -
Del Shofner : 4/22/2014 10:21 pm : link
I like this kid. The Fred Stanley of the new millenium.

Great play by Solarte!
nice barehanded play
WeatherMan : 4/22/2014 10:21 pm : link
with the wet field that was not easy to pull off.
Solarte
RasputinPrime : 4/22/2014 10:22 pm : link
with another amazing barehanded grab in the rain.

Love this kid. Love this kid.

Are we really going to let Ryan on this team?
Dellin get's umped
RasputinPrime : 4/22/2014 10:24 pm : link
and then gives up a double.
double with one out.
Del Shofner : 4/22/2014 10:24 pm : link
Let's go, Dellin.
Xander gets the RBI
WeatherMan : 4/22/2014 10:27 pm : link
at least that's something.
another double -
Del Shofner : 4/22/2014 10:27 pm : link
9-3. One more out to go, though.

he has an ERA this season
RasputinPrime : 4/22/2014 10:28 pm : link
just drop the hammer on this one.

9-3
Dellin
Del Shofner : 4/22/2014 10:28 pm : link

FTW.

Keep 'em coming! Awesome debut for Tanaka against Boston. He's for real.
4-1 so far against Boston this year
mfsd : 4/22/2014 10:39 pm : link
after going 6-13 against them last year...good start boys, keep it up
Toronto and Tampa Bay won so we didn't gain any ground but
Del Shofner : 4/22/2014 10:51 pm : link
we're in first place and that's better than the alternative.
When does
Phil in LA : 4/22/2014 10:52 pm : link
Tanaka-Mania start?
Nice to see Ellsbury, Beltran, and McCann
mfsd : 4/22/2014 10:54 pm : link
all break out the lumber tonight
Tanaka in the postgame interview is a little scary.
Del Shofner : 4/22/2014 11:18 pm : link
Supports Phil's point of view. Threw the wrong pitches on the HRs.

This guy does not accept any form of failure. His translator is intimidated.
