NFT: privacy fence quote

26.2 : 4/22/2014 4:54 pm
hey guys - just got a quote to get a 6-ft privacy fence put in the back yard. I was quoted for 152-Ft (small yard) pressure treated pine with the posts in concrete for just under $4k. For cedar add approx $700. is this on the high side? if its fair is there a benefit to cedar over pine? cedar seems to be more resistant to elements according to google. other than that they look about the same.
If including materials,

that isn't bad. I'd go PT and stain it but if the upgrade to cedar won't break your bank, do it.
sounds rather high to me

You could put one in yourself for much less than that. Fences are fairly easy - I'm no Bob Vila but I put up our fence when we lived in Florida.

yeah it includes materials and removal of the existing chain fence currently there. the upgrade won't break me. wouldn't I still need to stain/seal cedar too?

You are getting hosed. Do it yourself and save the cash. Real easy to do. Then go and splurge on something.
Seems comparable to what I paid

gate, and drive gate.
Cedar

naturally resists rot, so you could leave it unstained/finished and it will turn that grey color over time. Its just a visual preference thing at this point because the pine is PT and won't rot if you don't treat that either.

I put in a short 16' fence in CT and while it was certainly doable, it is hard work digging holes, and the materials are expensive, so you are not saving the full amount doing it yourself. As with all of these questions, just get three quotes and you will know you are not getting ripped off.

I'm currently builidng a 16x16 ft patio with pavers myself. thats enough work for right now (and I'm not even done digging yet) and I'm saving there as well so I don't mind mind paying someone else for this project.
I'm planning on doing a paver patio

this summer. How is it going? Did you look at slate as an option, was it way too much compared to pavers?

its going well just a lot of digging (pick ax and shovel) right now. unless I went really high end, the materials were all about the same. it was only going to be like 13x13, but they only sold the stone I wanted in pallets and 13x13 ended up being like 2.5 pallets so I either had to shrink it or make it bigger, so I'm going bigger to make it bigger to be able to use 3 pallets worth of stone...the only thing that worries me at this point is leveling it once I'm finished digging.
Why not get
mrvax : 4/22/2014 5:23 pm : link
at least 3 quotes. When you narrow it down, ask to see 1 or 2 recent jobs they did in your area.

Shame you can't do it yourself at this time. I even did one once and it turned out rather well.
Had to buy a sawz-all to cut through roots for the posts though.

Good luck.
Yeah, I agree.

Get a couple more quote just for your due diligence.
why not vinyl?
pjcas18 : 4/22/2014 5:44 pm : link
No one installs wood really (in mass at least) anymore.

My quote for 400 linear feet is around 11k, so not much different than what you are getting for wood.
Any permits involved?
mamamia : 4/22/2014 6:47 pm : link
If so will they handle that?
leave the chainlink
oghwga : 4/22/2014 6:57 pm : link
And spend the 4K on arborvitaes. Green privacy.
stain it
Paulie Walnuts : 4/22/2014 10:44 pm : link

buy really good stain/ protectant
I went for the cedar
buford : 4/23/2014 5:53 am : link
and the termites love it. Go for the PT.
I like cedar.
rasbutant : 4/23/2014 1:13 pm : link
digging the holes all depends on what the soils are like. Could be an easy job or could take all day to do a couple holes. I had some rather large rocks that slow my project down.
your paver project will level
Davisian : 4/23/2014 1:27 pm : link
By screeding the sand underneath as you lay down the bricks.

Try to get the sub base as close to visually level as you can, then let the sand do the work.

You should have a few inch base of crusher run, then a couple inches of masonry sand.

A roll of landscape fabric between the two will really help the worst of the weeds from getting in between the pavers..
thats a good price...
GMAN4LIFE : 4/23/2014 2:06 pm : link
if they are taking the old fence(which i thought was standard) then its easy money
I think I paid
Rick5 : 4/23/2014 3:59 pm : link
$2300 for cedar one year ago including removal of the old fence and installation of a nice gate. I'm in SE VA though not the NE. I think it was for 119 feet. The old gate was at the front of the house and now it is in the back, so that took a lot off of the total size of the fence.
