This phone has been hyped for the past 2 months and finally was introduced yesterday. The specs are comparable, mostly better, than most of the flagships being released right now. It's running Cyanogenmod 11S out of the box, which is Android Kit Kat 4.4.2.

Shocker.. One of these days I'm gonna grow a set and drop VZW. I think I could live just fine without a smartphone, but not sure I want to at this point either. Came close last fall, but decided to upgrade and give them my nuts for another two years.

I'm not gonna defend Verizon, but the current phone hardware differences are due to the legacy networks. All providers are converging on LTE based technologies. That means in a few years (hopefully), you may be able to buy a phone you can use on pretty much any network (eventually even worldwide).
It's not just legacy differences

Providers make it difficult at times simply to prevent mobility. Prime example being Verizon allowing only whitelisted IMEI IDs on their network to prevent people from carrying over phones from Sprint.
