Left Tackle key to this draft

JOMO25 : 4/23/2014 11:41 am
Option 1: If they believe Beatty is still a viable LT for this franchise, then Pugh is obviously rock solid and your looking at a mid round swing tackle in this draft. Candidates:

Schofield
Britt
Turner

Option 2: If they believe Pugh is the LT of the present and future (as I do) and that Beatty while may not be cut now, is merely a matter of time before a cut is palatable $$ wise and in the interim, he can compete for the RT spot and if he loses to a rookie, then he's a swing tackle. If this is the case, than a RT is a Rd 2/3 priority. Candidates:

Moses, Bitonio Rd 2
James, Mewhort Rd 3
Fleming Rd 4

Option 3: If they believe Pugh is the RT of the future and Beatty is unreliable, it opens the door to Lewan or Martin in Rd 1.

I'd go with Option 2 because I flat out don't think Beatty is tough enough to be a consistently good football player. On the other hand, I think Pugh is outstanding and has LT "feet" and almost as important, is a responsible/reliable/tough player that we can feel comfortable on the blind side. All too often we get carried away in things like arm length and lose the importance of professionalism. Take Antonio Richardson for example. If his knee checks out, he's got ideal measurable. However, he lacks the head/heart etc. to be a pro. I wouldn't take that guy with our 6th rounder. While Beatty isn't quite the sloppy excuse for a football player that Richardson is, he's got a toughness void.
Tend to agree

I love Mewhort and had him at #2 in the mock I posted y'day. That was ridiculed, but his stock appears on the rise and I feel him creeping into second round.
I think that's a good analysis

My only input is that I think the Pugh is definitely capable of playing LT just as well as RT. Whether he moves there this year or next depends on Beatty but in either case it means a 1st round LT just isn't the necessity some see it as. I see a 3rd round RT as filling the immediate need..
I don't think Beatty is a Right Tackle......

and probably wouldn't thrive there. I think he'll be back at LT and will play well enough, with his new linemates, and new offense (blocking scheme) to justify the contract he signed. I think we'll all be pleasantly surprised with him this year - that's the optimist in me.
of everyone you mentioned bitonio is the best fit
GiantsFan84 : 4/23/2014 12:47 pm : link
some teams have spoken to him about moving to center so it appears he has that versatility. he also played RT in college.

if beatty cannot play this year, pugh can slide over to LT with bitonio playing RT. if beatty returns next year bitonio can slide over to center.

if beatty does play this year, bitonio can learn RT and C and provide depth at each while developing at both positions and hopefully develop into the C of the future for the team
Beatty was pretty darn good in 2012 & paid him big money
JohnB : 4/23/2014 12:49 pm : link
With the amount of money in cap space he is taking up, you really have to give Beatty every chance to return to form.
That said, I would hate to see a repeat of last year.

That said, I think that the draft will be VERY telling about the health and what the Giants think of his long term success as a Giant will be. If he's on the path to recovery, we'll see it in the draft and if he isn't, we'll see it in the draft.
The team needs a plan B

no one knows which Will B. is going to show up
Yes, left tackle is very important...

... and the topic was discussed extensively over the past two days in the linked thread. As for your options, the other players/positions available at 12, 43, 74 etc. will also factor into the decisions.
'Will Beatty is the key to this draft' - ( New Window )
This draft is so deep with RT talant
BarbieCarpenter : 4/23/2014 1:05 pm : link
We can fix and deepen or OLINE without using a high pick. We have to grab one of these WR in the second but other than that I'm pretty wide open.

From what I have been able to garner, Beatty will be 100% by the start of the season. Lets chalk last year up as a gaffe by Beatty from which he will totally make amends this year. That is why I don't expect an OT in the 1st. I could see Ealy in the 1st and Tuitt in the 2nd to solidify the DL. Unfortunately we need to rely on hope that we can grab a FS later in the draft or have Hill's replacement already on the roster. IMHO.

Ealy in the 1st and Tuitt in the 2nd would be

a TV tosser, let alone a remote tosser.

No OL, WR, TE etc. early huh?
Mewhort
JOMO25 : 4/23/2014 2:34 pm : link
is very good but do think he's more of a Rd 3 than 2 guy
Good analysis and I agree - My only change would be
PatersonPlank : 4/23/2014 4:05 pm : link
that for Option #2 I would still go first round, and take Martin or Lewan. If its going to be a tackle then I want the best one.
