WR Screen In 2014 (& Jeremy Deering)

KWALL : 4/23/2014 1:21 pm
The WR screen is a play the NYG have not utilized and it's been a mistake especially when you have a guy like Cruz.

I guarantee this will change in 2014.

Last season, Rodgers threw 22% of his passes behind the LOS (completing 80%).

Eli? Only 13% of his passes went behind the LOS.

The WR screen to GB WRs Cobb and Jones was a big part of the offense. 28% of Jones catches were behing the LOS. Cobb was hurt a lot last year, but when he played 23% were caught behind the LOS. The year before he caught 80 with 27% of these catches behind the LOS.

The GB WRs averaged 6.5 yards on these plays. When you're completing 80+% of these plays, I'll take that all day.

Victor Cruz last year? 3 out of his 70+ receptions were behind the LOS. It's been a glaring mistake by the NYG to ignore getting Cruz the ball on these plays. Folks, this is going to change this year and it's about time.

The WR screen will be a bigger part of the offense this year. Right now I only see Cruz as a real weapon on this play. A guy with his short area quicks and running ability should have his behind the LOS number at 20+%.

So...many of you may be saying "What does this have to do with Rutgers?"

Well, Rutgers has a guy in this draft who can help the Giants here.

WR Brandon Coleman? No chance. I've seen posted on BBI that Coleman's production was hurt by the QBs. This is not the case. These same QBs played when Sanu caught 100+ passes(they also threw for the same number of passes/yards in both years). And these QBs did not hurt the development of other pass catchers at RU this past season (The TE produced more yards, catches then Coleman).

Coleman simply could not get open all year. That was the problem (and it had to do with the knee injury). He hurt the QB's production(and team). It was not the QB hurting Coleman's numbers.

The guy on Rutgers who can help the NYG pass offense played defense last year. The RU staff screwed his NFL potential by moving him around so much. From WR, QB, RB, and then S last year.

Jeremy Deering is the name.

6'1" 210lbs. 4.33 40.

On the field, he runs like a faster James Jones. Very strong lower body. Runs hard. Tough to tackle. Knows how to use his arms to keep defenders off him. While playing RB at Rutgers he was a tough in between the tackles runner.

For the past 2 years, he should have been playing WR for Rutgers. If he did, I think the guy is a 2nd-3rd round pick in this draft.

Right now? He's probably a 7th rounder. He's a guy who can come in and thrive in the GB type offense.

There you have it NYG fans. Look for a big bump in WR screens this season and keep an eye on Jeremy Deering late in the draft.
Valid point about WR screens
NYGmen58 : 4/23/2014 2:19 pm : link
but not sure I see the correlation with the young man from Rutgers.

I agree that the Giants screen game in general was terrible last year and we should expect/hope to see more screen passes. The Giants ran WR screens in the past very effectively with Manningham, who they now have back and Holiday is the perfect "gadget" for screen plays to the outside.

Your point makes sense but it is no startling revelation. The Giants know they have to be a better screen team this year and involve their WRs in the screen game. This is not a personnel issue, it's a matter of exectution.

I don't know enough about Deering but I can assure you the Giants wouldn't draft him just based on his experience on wr screens. A lot bigger needs/attributes at WR that need to be focused on.

Why was Deering every moved from WR??!
Jernigan showed in the last few games
GIANTSr01 : 4/23/2014 2:26 pm : link
that he's a threat on WR screens and he should get plenty of opportunities this year to show those few games weren't a fluke.
The Giants receivers this year, so far,
barens : 4/23/2014 2:35 pm : link
are different from what Green Bay has had. I don't see Victor Cruz as that type of receiver. He's not going to make people miss after the catch all that much. Manningham, maybe and Jernigan, though I am far from sold on him.

Randall Cobb, to me, is one of the best in the business in that area.

To be honest, I think most people would say that's his strength.
I think Cruz is very good at making people miss.

Listen to his interview from yesterday. He states that is something he wants to get back to this season. Go back and watch him prior to last season.

Cruz can't make people miss?

Guess I was hallucinating all those times I saw him turn short receptions in 50+ yard TDs.
I thought I had seen it all...

until this theory that we will throw more WR screen passes should result in a drafting of a Rutgers guy.

We have the WR's now to run the screens - it just wasn't a focus for gilbride.
The Giants are more likely to draft

Trindon Holliday? We know how dangerous he is in open space. Of course we also know about his fumbling problem, but the Giants grabbed this guy because he's a weapon.
It takes a lot of coordination to run that play

If Eli is under C, the OG and OT on the WR side have to hold their ground so that they dont get hit in the head by the pass on the way to the WR. If in shotgun, snap needs to be quick and accurate, unlike the lollipops Eli had to look for from Baas and Boothe, so he can get the ball out of his hands to the WR quickly and before the D can recognize and react.

when our OL was good and defenses had to respect the deep ball and running game, corners couldn't play man on man/bump and run coverage every down so well-timed WR screens were more effective.

last year, no one had respect for our line, teams played more aggressive coverage on our recivers and so the screens that were run did not get anywhere.
This would be a good play to run with Jernigan

Deering really doesn't have a lot of experience with screens. They had him out of position for years.

He played FS all last year but that's not his NFL position. NFL teams need to look at his film running with the ball. It's impressive. He was also a KR.

Gilbride should have used it more. We had Nicks and Cruz. That's plenty to use the WR screen.
The prevalence of WR screen plays

is one of the things I like least about the modern NFL.

At some point the refs have to start flagging the uncalled Ineligible Downfield and Offensive Pass Interference violations that happen on half of these plays, right?

I feel the same way.

As irrational and silly as it sounds, doesn't it feel cheap when WR bubble/junk/etc screens are so prevalent in an offense? Almost like it's free yards. It's the NFL passing offense equivalent of that guy who spams one small nigh-unblockable move in a fighting video game, kicking your shins and whittling you down.
So what is the point of your post?
NYGmen58 : 4/23/2014 3:49 pm : link
1.) I think everyone agrees the Giants need to become a better screen team (with both RBs and WRs)

2.) They already have some good WRs for screens (Manningham, Jernigan, Holliday, as I stated earlier)

3.) What the Giants need at WR is an EXPERIENCED WR who can play the X, run crisp routes, get separation, and be a play maker in the downfield passing game (Deering does not appear to meet any of these qualifications)

Again, just not sure what value you are adding or how this Jeremy Deering relates to need for better execution of screen plays.

Was this just some weird attempt at promoting Deering bc you are a Rutgers fan or something?
Deering would be a steal in th 7th
gtt350 : 4/23/2014 4:14 pm : link
you could play him at safety or WR, even rb
Experience running screens?
KWALL : 4/23/2014 4:19 pm : link
That would mean nothing to me. The point is we could use a strong runner at the position (such as Cobb/Jones) because we will be running the play more often.

Deering has the skill set to become a productive WR in the NFL and a weapon after the catch. That was my point. It's a player who will be undervalued because of the position change in college. When he ran with the ball in college he brought some unique skills that will work in the NFL. A smart team will take a look at his offensive game film and find a spot for him.

He's a guy who may go in round 7/undrafted (unless Belichick grabs him early). But Deering is a guy who could be one of the steals of the year. Kind of like those 2 Rutgers guys last year. I did my Magoo thing with Marcus Cooper & Tim Wright. 2 guys who did not start much at Rutgers but became 2 of the best NFL rookies of 2013. Deering is very similar. He's very athletic and a great runner with the ball. He'll be a great 7th round value.

He's also outstanding on ST. He'll help your coverage teams and was very good as a KR.
I always assumed that the Giants thought WR screens too risky, because

open spot, but at least maybe just to me, he's not a yards after catch kind of receiver. I'm not trying to knock him, he's still an excellent receiver in my book, and that 2011 season was a crazy break out season for him with some huge plays, but getting him the ball behind the LOS, and letting him go to work, I don't know, maybe your right, I guess I just don't see him as a Randall Cobb type.

Realistically, what position do you see Deering drawing intrerst at? Do you honestly think he gets picked, or simply an UDFA?
this guy is a classic example of Schiano messing up
gtt350 : 4/24/2014 6:10 am : link
he made this guy a specialty player when he could have been a 4 year starter on either side of the ball and be a 2nd or 3rd rd pick

KWALL : 4/24/2014 11:50 am : link
I don't think he cuts it as a FS. He only played 1 year on defense and he had problems in coverage.

His NFL future is on offense. He has impressive film running the ball as a frosh/soph. He's a WR who can run over a LB. He has excellent speed too. He ran a 4.33. The team that drafts him will look at the running skills and speed. This is his chance to get drafted. Without much exp at WR, it's a projection so predicting the draft spot is tough.

I really thought the RU staff blew it the past 2 years with Deering. He should have played WR.

Belichick loves the Rutgers guys. Schiano is helping him in NE. Maybe NE picks him. My guess is 7th round or undrafted.
