Hypothetically, suppose Beatty is not available until

Bobby Epps : 4/23/2014 1:54 pm
Game 5 because of his broken leg.

Charles Brown was benched by the Saints for the latter part of the 2013 season because he was abused at LEFT Tackle.

Suppose we moved Pugh to LT to protect Eli's blind side and Brown to RT where he wouldn't have to protect Eli's blind side, wouldn't have to consistently face excellent pass rushers and could play a mauling-type RT.

Starting OL would then be, from left-to-right:

Pugh-Schwartz-Walton-Snee-Brown

Look, I realize it's 3 new guys and Pugh-shifted on the OL but I'm really concerned about Beatty's availability. If he's not available, then who plays LT? If Pugh plays LT, then who plays RT?

When Beatty is healthy, then we could put him back at LT and Pugh back to RT or depending on whether we draft an OT, put the rookie in at OT, after a few games.

This is why in my Mock Draft, I drafted 3 OTs (Lewan, Patchan and Booth, who could play OG).

I agree with all the prior threads that the key to the Offense is LT. If Eli keeps running for his life because of poor LT play, then we will have a terrible won-loss record in 2014.
I think Brown will surprise a lot of you.

Even though he got benched... He was better than Beatty was last year.
The thing that surprises me about Brown
PeterS : 4/23/2014 2:12 pm : link
is that he's listed at anywhere from 3-5 lbs. lighter than he was at his combine which was 303. Kind of light for a right tackle though Pugh did it last year.

Schwartz is a starting LT,no need to move Pugh to yet another position.

This assumes that Pugh could handle LT
Ten Ton Hammer : 4/23/2014 2:13 pm : link
It's not as easy as plug and play. A lot of guys can play RT but not LT.

This isn't really an achievement that should offer anyone comfort.

It's on par with saying when/if the corpse of Snee goes down, no one should worry because Jerry will be there to step in.
Schwartz is not a left tackle
Phil from WNY : 4/23/2014 2:31 pm : link
Never has been and probably never will be. He's a guard who played RT in college.
This scenario
old man : 4/23/2014 2:37 pm : link
would lead me to a versatile Zack Martin, as both insurance short term, WB replacement long term.
Even though I want Lewan.

Unrelated: I liked the comment yesterday on TL's UM linemate, Schofield; I think he'd be a nice 3rd/4th rd pick up for RG.
not related to beatty, but is anyone concerned
japanhead : 4/23/2014 2:39 pm : link
that schwartz has never played left guard in his career. hopefully he adapts well to life on that side. but i am left wondering why they don't stick snee in at LG for what is undoubtedly his last year and just let schwartz have RG? doesn't seem to make a ton of sense to me...
keep in mind "available in game 5" in no way guarantees
mfsd : 4/23/2014 2:39 pm : link
Beatty will be ready to start and play well by Game 5, if at all this season

Which means finding another LT could be pretty important

I believe he got benched in the Saints loss to the Rams when he faced Robert Quinn.

Giants will face the Rams this season. Will it be in the first few weeks before Beatty returns? We will see.

LT Pugh
LG Schwartz
C Walton
RG Snee
RT Bitonio

backup tackles: Beatty, Brown
backup guards: Jerry, Mosely
backup center: Ikard
The point I am trying to make is... Beatty healthy or not is no lock
Damon : 4/23/2014 3:45 pm : link
to beat out Brown for a spot. Not saying they don't bring in another T in the draft. I hope they do. Schwartz is not playing T here.

Snee & Walton are injury ?'s, but that lineup is way more desirable than that disgusting shit show last year.
If you listen to the Beatty interview of 4/22 it sounds like
Marty in Albany : 4/23/2014 4:18 pm : link
the part of the leg that was broken was his knee. He talks about his knee and he talks about pain using his leg.

IMO that does not sound like a simple recovery from a broken leg when the doc just says, "stay off it until it is fully healed." If, in fact, there has been damage to his knee, that could have a significant impact on our draft.

Snee hasn't played LG. So, either way, you'd have the problem that you're talking about.
Wow
OC : 4/23/2014 4:26 pm : link
I guess that would cement an OL at 12, it would seem.
Replying to Marty
OC : 4/23/2014 4:27 pm : link
That is.
I'm pretty sure
mrvax : 4/23/2014 4:58 pm : link
the Giants will have quite a few guys compete for left tackle this camp. My guess is that Pugh will win the LT spot which he played all through college quite well.

Then they will determine of the guys left who plays right tackle.

They actually have enough Oline bodies to be able to put together a decent Oline. I'm going to assume that Beatty won't be 100% by opening day. I also think that Snee is shot but Coughlin will play him anyway until he really shits the bed.
...Bobby, I think, depending on the draft...
BMac : 4/23/2014 6:37 pm : link
....that what you propose could be a viable alternative to the standard OL view. I cannot, however, discount what may happen in the draft to change this scenario.

What works against a draft-imposed scenario is the Giants history with draft choices sitting for a bit before they get an opportunity to start (with obvious exceptions like Pugh). I could see your scenario working until, perhaps, after the bye. Depending of course on injuries, draft choices, etcetera. Not a bad thought at all, though.

Good choices!
Hmmmmm!

You are listing Snee as a starter. I don't know if I should laugh or cry

Didn't he just take a major paycut to the Vet Min. or close to it because he's coming off 2 hip surgeries and a very questionable Elbow surgery but people still think of him as a starter. WOW!!
Vegas Steve: OK, but who plays RG?
Bobby Epps : 4/23/2014 7:33 pm : link
Plus I think Snee brings stability to the OL, that is, settle things down when things are not going well.
Draft Zac Martin and move Pugh to left tackle
Earl the goat : 4/23/2014 7:43 pm : link
Left tackle. Pugh
Left guard. Martin
Center. Walton
Right guard. Snee. Jerry. Mosely. Herman
Right tackle. Schwartz. Brewer

With Pugh and Martin on left side you have 2 versatile athletic smart lineman who will protect Eli's blindside for the rest of us career. You don't necessarily need road graders on the left side. With the size of Schwartz. Jerry. Brewer. Mosely. You have guys that will let you pound the running game.
Earl: If you're going to draft Zack Martin to play OG,
Bobby Epps : 4/23/2014 7:54 pm : link
my preference is Xavier Su'a-Filo.

Su'a-Filo is about the same height and weight as Martin but is much faster in the short shuttle, a bit faster in the 3-cone and much faster in 40 yds.

Su'a-Filo runs 10 yds. in 1.59 secs., which is the FASTEST of all the offensive lineman (except for Matt Patchan, who also runs 10 yds. in the same time)

So, if you want an OG, then Su'a-Filo is better.

Zack Martin is more versatile but if you want the BEST OG in the Draft, then IMO Su'a-Filo is the guy.

Unfortunately the team seems to still think of him as a starter (even at the expense of not playing their big FA signing , Schwartz, at his best position), so we have to too, no matter how likely of a disaster it is to be.
