Raiders at #5 prefer Lewan over Matthews & Robinson

The Oakland Tribune reports the Raiders are higher on Michigan OT Taylor Lewan than Texas A& M OT Jake Matthews and Auburn OT Greg Robinson.
Lewan is widely considered the third-best tackle in this year's class behind both Robinson and Matthews, but he's still a top-notch prospect and likely would have been the No. 1 pick last year. ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. described Lewan as a "nasty street fighter" and thinks he could go as high as No. 2 overall to the Rams. The Raiders sit in the No. 5 slot and are far from set at the tackle spots.

Really hope this starts a bit of a slide for Matthews to a spot where its affordable for Reese to grab up and snag. I strongly feel Matthews given his obvious pedigree and being a supreme tactician will truly be a stabilizing force on any team's tackle side for a solid decade.

They have Watson
JOMO25 : 4/23/2014 2:53 pm : link
and the Jet RT. I think Watkins, Mack or even a QB make more sense than a tackle for them.
They're all really close

grade wise and depending on the scheme and/or situation they are heading in to, I can see any one of them being the first OT taken.

Matthews is a guy I would trade up for if he falls out of the top 7 or 8. That
Kiper said today that Lewan could be in

play as high as the #2 pick. Basically said he is believed to be the most ready of the three. I am a little skeptical, but I think he definitely may be gone by the giants pick.
the off-field red flags make him a perfect fit for the Raiders
WeatherMan : 4/23/2014 2:56 pm : link
would much rather have Matthews or Robinson myself, but there's no way either of those two make it to 12.
I wouldn't

trust any article posted now. Way too close to the draft to take this stuff seriously.

I don't want to trade up for anybody, but doing so if Matthews fell to 7 or 8 would admittedly be tempting. I would in fact rather trade down into the mid 20s and take Moses. He played LT last year. CK might still be available as well.

In any event, I still see Robinson going before Matthews.
fear not, this means the Giants will sign him.

In 4 years after he washes out in Oakland :-)
God bless the Raiders.
Ira : 4/23/2014 3:06 pm : link
We can count on them to blow an early draft pick.
It's the Raiders

Glorious recent first round history:

Hayden
McClain
Heyward-Bay
Russell
Gallery
Fabian Washington.

Taking Lewan over Robinson and Matthews would just continue that fine tradition.
First Heyward-Bey, then MacClain.
MOOPS : 4/23/2014 3:08 pm : link
Now Lewan?

Those Bastards!!!!!
From the team that

drafted Robert Gallery! Do me another favor, Oakland!
A very Raider-like player and individual
JonC : 4/23/2014 3:14 pm : link
makes a lot of sense.
Even if he isn't a threat to the community now...
Dunedin81 : 4/23/2014 3:14 pm : link
three years in the silver and black will turn him into one.

Lewan is a guy I really don't want for character reasons, but putting those aside the tape just doesn't match the physical gifts. I hope a team like the Raiders or someone else ahead of us falls in love, hopefully getting Matthews or Robinson into realistic trade-up range.
I really think this first round is gonna be wacky
wigs in nyc : 4/23/2014 3:15 pm : link
I don't have any data or facts or info. Nothing. Every year there's players picked "higher than projected", etc., and I'm looking forward to a very volatile round one in that regard.

I can't wait for the draft

given the first 12 picks. This is going to be an exciting one
I think the Raiders
Amtoft : 4/23/2014 3:28 pm : link
trade out if they can. I can see a team moving up with a 2nd and a 5th.

I am talking in general. Just like another bullshit report that sources close to the Texans are pushing for Mack over Clowney. Stuff like that. Another one was the rumor or whatever the Lions might want to trade up. Hence, right now, regardless of what team, I don't take any of these reports seriously.
Agreed

Reminds me of the old Raiders

Back in the day, if a player was viewed as mean, nasty and/or a trouble maker, the Raiders had a spot for them
Good...

If this is a smoke screen then the Raiders are even dumber than
PatersonPlank : 4/23/2014 3:42 pm : link
I think (which I guess is possible). I mean who has Lewan rated higher than those two? Do they really expect another GM to be sitting here going "oh no, I need to trade up to take Lewan over Matthews".
Good...
SanFranGiantsFan : 4/23/2014 5:38 pm : link
The more I read about Lewan, the less enamored of him I become.
It has to a rumor because
Jimmy Googs : 4/23/2014 5:56 pm : link
BBI is convinced there is no upside, whatsoever, of letting other teams know what you generally think about a position or a player prior to the Draft.

Given the tremendous depth of OL prospects in this draft...
BMac : 4/23/2014 6:48 pm : link
...I would not be at all surprised to see the Giants wait to grab their first OL (I expect two, overall).
Raiders are going Manziel.
Boy Cord : 4/23/2014 6:51 pm : link
He is young and can sit behind Schaub for a year or two.

I don't know what you are implying with that picture. Either:

A. Smoke and Mirrors
B. Where there's smoke, there's fire.

I'm so confused, I hate this time of year! Who am I to believe?

If he's there, I think they will do that. I just don't believe the hype that the qb's are falling. I think at least 2 will go in the first 8 picks - maybe 3.
More and more,
Randy in CT : 4/24/2014 6:50 am : link
wonder if the Cowboys go after Manziel. Romo's contract be damned. I know they love him there but I'm not sure if the business decision re: Romo is JJ's style.
What I find interesting
Randy in CT : 4/24/2014 6:53 am : link
is that depending on how you grade the tackles, they aren't far apart--as Sy56 pointed out above. Here are his top guys:

1 – Greg Robinson – Auburn – 6’5/332: 84

2 – Jake Matthews – Texas A& M – 6’6/308: 83

3 – Taylor Lewan – Michigan – 6’7/309: 82

4 – Zach Martin – Notre Dame – 6’4/308: 81

5 – Joel Bitonio – Nevada – 6’4/302: 80

Do the Giants feel Bitonio lasts until round 2 so they pull the trigger on BPA at 12? Maybe.
Randee,
Big Blue '56 : 4/24/2014 7:08 am : link
putting cap dollars aside(very difficult to do obviously), Romo has had two back surgeries. As good as he is, he takes a tremendous pounding week after week. Aikman is quite right to worry about Romo's health moving forward..ONE back surgery for the average lay person is a lot to deal with sans the pounding..

Manziel at 16 makes a whole lot of sense for the 'Boys..Publicity-wise this would be right up Jone's Splooge alley

Lewan, Matthew or Martin @ 12
SGMen : 4/24/2014 7:15 am : link
For the OL, either of the three work for me.

I don't think DT Donaldson will be there at 12 anymore.
Randy, top offensive tackles tend to go earlier than most 'experts'
Ira : 4/24/2014 8:09 am : link
predict. Look at last years first round. So, while I have no idea what the Giants decision makers think of Bitonio, I doubt he lasts to our second round pick.

Smoke screen. I knew I should have went with the smoke with the actually words smoke screen on it.
Raiders have always marched to a different drummer
Bob in Newburgh : 4/24/2014 10:56 am : link
I saw, a few days ago, on a professional NFL blog, that the Raiders plan to move Austin Howard to Guard.

This, after targeting him and driving up the price, although the Jets remedied the situation quite nicely and saved a bundle in the process.

Now if Howard is a Guard, having an interest in an OT is not that far-fetched.

I totally agree...actually the only player I would want to trade up for if he falls a bit outside of maybe Watkins.
