NFT: creatnine levels

missbibbasdaddy : 4/23/2014 7:08 pm
My test came in at 1.43 suppose to be 1.2 or less
50(next week) yr old male
its elevated but not crazy (I guess 4.0 or more would be kidney failure/dialysis)
from what I have read some of reasons mine may be higher than "normal"
I trained twice the day prior
I still have a decent amount of muscle on me 5'11 209 lift 4/5 x a week
I take creatine
I eat/drink(shakes) a good amount of protein (probably close to 1 gram per pd of bodyweight)
may have been slightly dehydrated before test

going to get ultrasound on kidneys to be safe and will retest levels again
besides that my urine/blood tests were solid( well 100 on glucose urine (fasting)test buts its been than for 20 years

any input would be appreciated

Do not take any anti inflammatory medications. No motrin aleve etc.Check the side effect profile of every medication you take.
high protein

Intake can damage your kidneys.
so your're concerned that your creatine levels
Jon from PA : 4/23/2014 7:32 pm : link
were SLIGHTLY elevated even though you take a creatine supplement? Am I reading that right?
your creatinine
snickers : 4/23/2014 7:35 pm : link
The factors you mention can raise your creatinine level but should not be able to increase it above normal. Your urine testing for the last 20 years has from your comments shown a higher than normal amount of sugar?? or protein???? In either case the increase should be closely followed. Was your fasting glucose checked? Ultrasound is a good idea but I would ask your md to do a creatinine clearance to see how well your kidneys function. They will make you collect your urine for 24 hours and return it and do some blood tests again to calculate this number. If it is fine, then there is little to worry about.
My concern remains the longstanding problem with your urinalysis, I think that your higher creatinine might somehow be related. Get this worked out as some of these kidney issues are easily treated if caught early. Also not sure about the use of creatine in your present circumstance. Check with your m.d about this. Good luck.
some quick research shows
Jon from PA : 4/23/2014 7:39 pm : link
a delta of .2 for a muscular guy who lifts and takes creatine is nothing to worry about.Especially if everything else is normal.
protein in urine is fine
missbibbasdaddy : 4/23/2014 7:47 pm : link
my fasting blood sugar is borderline 100 actually went down slightly from 2 years ago
from what I understand protein doesn't screw up your kidneys but if they are harmed u should have a lot of it
creatine in itself doesn't increase creatinine levels
but I wouldn't be taking creatine if I knew my levels were elevated
If the delta is .2
missbibbasdaddy : 4/23/2014 7:48 pm : link
than my reading should still be in "normal" parameters

How would I have a long standing problem with urinenalysis is fasting glucose is 100?
I know that isn't great but 100-125 if pre diabetic and I am at the very low range of that
No dr was ever concerned about it since it stayed constant last 20 years
thanks for the input
missbibbasdaddy : 4/23/2014 7:58 pm : link
appreciated
you are JUST outside the normal range
Berrylish : 4/23/2014 7:59 pm : link
depending on who is saying what the normal range is. It varies from text to text. It may be normal by one medical outlet and just outside by another. The fasting of 100 is a little high and something that can usually be corrected by diet and exercise. Like cardio. Other than the glucose at 100, it doesnt really seem as though you have a problem. You can get that blood test taken in another week and it will change. For reference, my medical book I have in front of me says you are just outside normal limits on the creatinine (.06-1.2 for men). This book also puts fasting glucose at 75-105. I have another book that has it at a lower value with 100 being just at the edge of pre-diabetic. It's something like 65-99)
Kaiser
missbibbasdaddy : 4/23/2014 8:07 pm : link
uses .99 upper threshold for glucose
and 1.2 fro creatinine
I have seen higher numbers used by other groups
They may be a little on conservative end
But I figure better be safe than sorry so getting ultrasound friday
agree with
Berrylish : 4/23/2014 8:18 pm : link
the better safe than sorry idea. I do wish more people were this proactive with their health!
creatine supplementation
natefit : 4/23/2014 10:24 pm : link
has elevated my creatnine levels in the past as i recall
Do u need to cycle creatine
hudson : 4/23/2014 10:47 pm : link
I've been on it three months, some say yes but others say no.
yes
natefit : 4/23/2014 10:53 pm : link
it will be more effective if you do a cpl wks off every 2 or 3 months. Also gives your organs a break. Same for pre-workouts btw.

but won't you lose strength once you go off?

How long should you go off it?
if you take creatine, you can have higher levels
oipolloi : 4/24/2014 12:00 am : link
i was taking it a few years ago and my creatine level was 2.1. I stopped immediately and within a month it was down to 1.3

my cardiologist told me it can be a complicating factor in heart problems as well

at your age, there is absolutely no reason to be taking creatine and a high protein diet is just begging for arteriosclerosis. there is evidence that the protein in protein bars and shakes is worse than saturated fat because it contains oxidized cholesterol. that's not an established fact. but why take the risk?

sounds like you are still in young guy, weightlifter mode rather than middle-aged guy sensible diet mode.

Stop the protein supplements
LauderdaleMatty : 4/24/2014 12:15 am : link
And eat better instead.
I know this was written for the OP but

it couldnt describe me better lol: "sounds like you are still in young guy, weightlifter mode rather than middle-aged guy sensible diet mode."

Hi Nate. I think the way you excel in the bodybuilding arena is admirable and 95% of the populace would benefit from a similar lifestyle. However, my unsolicited (and perhaps unwelcome :) advice would be to consider just that--Changing your diet and maybe even workout lifestyle to one that is more enjoyable--eating the foods you like, laying off a ton of supplements and drinks and working out less intensely. Do more fun, active stuff instead of the gym rat mode. You have a great foundation to build off of in a more fun way with swimming, hiking, biking and sports.

When you do that, I will counter by getting back in the gym more and eating better!
