Would the Cowboys take Manziel.. If he is there at 16?

ESPN’s Ed Werder threw fuel on the fire Wednesday afternoon by suggesting that the Cowboys could draft Manziel if he was available at No. 16, a sentiment backed up by an NFL scout, who informed Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report that Jerry Jones would eagerly take the plunge on Johnny Football.

Absolutely.
In a heartbeat.

I would enjoy that pick

Means they pass on a good defensive player.
Dallas should be in a rebuild mode. Their window has passed.
robbieballs2003 : 4/23/2014 7:33 pm : link
They won't think that way though. Getting Manziel would be a move in the right direction of them from strictly a football perspective. I'm not saying Manziel will or will not be a good pro.
not just that they pass on a defensive player
Giantsfan79 : 4/23/2014 7:34 pm : link
but the QB controversy the second Romo chokes will be priceless.
Dallas

What do you do with Romo. His cap hit and dead money are as follows:

2014 - cap hit 11.7m dead money - 41.6M
2015 - cap hit 27.7m dead money - 19.9m
2016 - cap hit 17.6m dead money - 11.6m

that is a huge amount of money
I doubt they can
GGGmen : 4/23/2014 7:46 pm : link
Unless they restructure Homo I believe they are tied in to his deal until 2017. It would be unwise for them to cut him but since when are they wise. JF is an ACL waiting to happen and I went to A&M.
This would never happen if Dallas is showing interest...
Jimmy Googs : 4/23/2014 7:58 pm : link
Again, BBI is convinced there is no upside, whatsoever, of letting other teams know what you generally think about a position or a player prior to the Draft.
You draft Manziel and play Romo until there's a pressure situation
Marty in Albany : 4/23/2014 8:03 pm : link
then you bring in Manziel who won't choke. Kinda reminds me of when the Cowboys used Dandy Don Meridith for running downs and Eddie LeBarron(sp?) for passing downs. (Grin!)
yes

Romo isn't getting any younger but manziel will be gone by 16
I hope

they move up in front of us to get him.

If their window has passed, what has the Giants'? Lapped them?

They're not going to blow it up fully and rebuild until Romo can't go anymore -- and, while the individual moves they make in following it may not be smart or work out, that general sentiment is 100% right.

that 28m cap hit in 2015 is utterly hilarious.
That's a lot of
AnishPatel : 4/23/2014 8:39 pm : link
money are paying Romo. If they wanted to rebuild they should have let him go. If they draft JM, then what? You can't get rid of Romo and can't play JM.

If this report came out now, then I say smoke screen. Just another bullshit report coming out weeks before draft day.
This is exactly what we want
BigBlueShock : 4/23/2014 8:54 pm : link
The more teams behind us (that need QB) think that Dallas is serious about taking Johnny football, the more likely it is that we can find a trade partner to move down a bit in the first

If it weren't for the cap hit for Romo, Johnny Football would be a good fit in Dallas.

And we thought out cap management was bad with Beatty. Holy shit!
Let him learn for 2 yrs
MotownGIANTS : 4/24/2014 9:02 am : link
Then cut bait on Romo.
Absolutely not
Mike from Ohio : 4/24/2014 9:14 am : link
Jones didn't just sign Romo to a huge contract they can't get out of to start rebuilding. Romo still has a couple of good years left so Jones is going to try and get playmakers at other positions to keep up the illusion that this team is only a couple of pieces away.

The NFC East is weak enough that they can still compete for a division title with what they have now. As long as that is the case the Cowboys will not be looking to the future, but to next year.
I think Romo is very talented but
Jimmy Googs : 4/24/2014 9:38 am : link
if the Cowboys don't make the playoffs again in 2014 and that $27M cap hit for 2015 is staring them in the face...

Jerry will really need to get his glasses cleaned that off-season.

Jerry is getting old
Reale01 : 4/24/2014 9:44 am : link
Don't think he wants to start a rebuild. That said, I think they would absolutely take him. Lots of publicity. Lots of people talking Cowboys. Lots of interviews for JJ. Needs of team are secondary to needs of JJ.
I would despise Manziel
Sonic Youth : 4/24/2014 9:52 am : link
He would shoot up straight to my #1 most hated player if this happened.
I would love it...
NNJ Tom : 4/24/2014 10:36 am : link
Just for the mayhem it would cause in Dallas.
The first incomplete pass Romo throws would bring
"WE WANT JOHNNY" chants. Priceless.

Are y'all hearing this type of stuff where you're at? About a month ago I recall an ESPN story pretty much stating Dallas' love of Mr Football.
Randy, all day,
bob in tx : 4/24/2014 10:51 am : link
every day. Dallas would sell 10 million Manziel jerseys by June and be on page 1 across the country all summer. But the cap hit is too much even for JJ to bear, in my view. They cut Ware because they are become more frugal/ cap-wise and then have Romo's hit? Makes no sense.

So, with that said, say a prayer that JJ moves up to draft Johnny?
bob, yeah
Randy in CT : 4/24/2014 11:41 am : link
I think we're employing too much logic here. While I think JJ is probably underrated as an owner/GM, I don't think it is out of the realm of possibilities that he goes with his heart and picks JM.

Personally, I see JM as a more athletic and clutch Romo so I wouldn't be crazy about them grabbing him. Maybe he has something up his sleeve regarding Romo's contract?
laugh all you want
fkap : 4/24/2014 12:24 pm : link
if a sizeable number of BBI had it's way and extended/restructured Eli this year, that's what his numbers would look like
lol oh man
Mike in Long Beach : 4/24/2014 12:29 pm : link
Wouldn't that be fun.
I think Jerry and Manziel are made for each other
nicky43 : 4/24/2014 1:01 pm : link
But I've always felt that every horse should have to asses.

Would he do it? It is the glamorous type of pick (media wise) that he gets suckered into (by himself) all the time.
