They have commissioned an artist, Zenos Frudakis, and will seek to raise $50,000 for "Joe's Bench" on the funding platform Kickstarter come July. "We just felt that the university was not ready yet" to honor Paterno, said Kim Intorre, one of the organizers. "But the community is." |
In contrast, over in Gettysburg, you will find statues and monuments to Confederate soldiers who fought to divide the nation.
This is 2014, not 1776. Joe Paterno is not a Founding Father, he's a football coach. His sins should not be forgiven because he built a football program. Judged according to the standards of their day, Jefferson and Washington were men of their times. At this time in history, sitting idly by while child rape occurs in your school's facilities ought not be chalked up to being a "man of your time." Because that is not acceptable in our time and if it was ever acceptable it sure as hell hasn't been for a long, long time.

Exactly. I never understood the big deal about Penn State. I drove by there last week on my way to someplace else, and I can't imagine that place means much more than that to most people...a place you drive by on the way to somewhere more important. I've never seen a group of people with a more overinflated sense of importance over something so non-important.

Says the guy who uses a college mascot in his handle.
Regardless of what anyone believes about JoePa, it's pretty shocking that this statue is happening.
Maybe Matt Lauer can interview the sculptor and see if there is any more damage he can do?

LOL... this
"Do they understand they never should have made the removal of the statue permanent? Do they understand how much they rushed to judgment to vilify Paterno? When will they do their part to restore Paterno’s place of honor in Penn State history? The locals are doing their part."

The handle I've had since I attended that college...and do you see me anywhere going nuts over Maryland sports? Besides I didn't say there is anything wrong with rooting for a college team...but if you don't think Penn State fans go to a weird place when it comes to their school I don't know what to tell you.
I certainly wouldn't continue to root for Maryland or any of their coaches if they knowingly abetted a child rapist because they were afraid of damaging their legacy.
2. Paterno and other Penn State officials had knowledge of said behavior at least a decade ago.
Seems pretty straightforward....
It was horseplay.
That anyone can come out and defend Paterno after this is beyond sad and shows how easily people Will condone and ignore sick behavior
I've asked this and never received a cogent answer. If Paterno was such a great and kind man why would he not follow up on this. Isn't that what a great and moral man would do. Not just the bare minimum and move on?
"Do they understand they never should have made the removal of the statue permanent?"
Huh? Either it should have been taken down of it should not have. What, was the statue in the penalty box for a double minor? Take it down and keep it down. Stop glorifying one of the most egocentric leaders in the history of college athletics.
It was late, but it was definitely on his "to do" list.
I can't even torture logic to the point where Paterno is a man worthy of a statue...
Yes, Paterno did a lot of good there. There's no disputing that. But whether it was ignorance, inaction, or malice, he also did something pretty huge that overshadows everything else quite significantly. If the bad is bad enough, people will remember that a heck of a lot more than the good. It's human nature, for the most part (Michael Jackson apparently was an exception) Those are the consequences of his actions or inactions.
Unwanted butt rape from a much older man can definitely put a damper on your day, sure, but being criticized? That shit lasts forever bro.
I would almost (almost) be on board for a tactical nuclear strike of Penn State if I could get a guarantee it would get the people that created that website.
You just fucking know that Jerry wants a statue. He dreams about it every night. And he should have one. Why not? He has multiple championships and built an iconic stadium. He's a hero for the brain dead Cowboys fans.
Meanwhile, the folks in PA are clamoring for yet another statue for a pedophilic apologist and ENABLER!!!
Don't you see what's wrong with that? Holy shit.
I do not think the good he did was mostly about winning football games or building the program. He did a lot for the community, education, and helped a lot of people. By any account I have heard he was a caring and generous man.
That's part of what makes this all so very sad. It really is a tragedy first for the kids and also for Jopa and his family. THE GOOD HE DID DOES NOT MAKE UP FOR WHAT HAPPENED or mitigate his culpability.
It scary to think that a basically good person could make such awful choices.
Let them build their statue. People and history will judge him as they see fit.
You can't be a 'basically good person' if you enable a situation like that. He could have taken Sandusky offline, and didn't because of friendship or football, and in either case that makes him an incredibly shitty human being.
From Wikipedia:
The fourth niche is empty.
On the grounds of the United States Military Academy at West Point there are plaques commemorating all of the generals that served in the Revolution. One plaque bears only a rank and a date ("major general...born 1740") but no name.
One of the most brilliant generals of the Revolution. Trusted as a son by General George Washington, who was shocked when the Continental Congress bypassed him for promotion:
George Washington letter to Philip Schuyler, December 5th, 1775
Without him, and the success he had, there may have never been a United States. Despite all the good he did, one bad deed lives in infamy. Forever.
As he himself said (in the movie, "A question of Honor"):
Oh, the man was Benedict Arnold. One of our greatest heros...until he fell.
Perhaps there ought to be a statue for Joe Paterno.
Not the man, though. Just the sunglasses.
Like Arnold's boot.
